If you don’t know a word or don’t understand a concept, look it up.

Always keep in mind that anime/manga comes from an entire different culture, so if something seems unusual to you (marriage matchmaking, some religious traditions, folklore, hierarchy etc), look it up.

Analyse the text - what themes can you see? Character parallels, the “point” of the story. If you look up exercises online, you can make a little study out of it.

Beware of your own bias. What is the WRITER doing? Keep yourself out of it. Your interpretation does not counter what’s objectively written. The story is not about you, nor your preferences, it’s about what the author is writing. Have a neutral mindset will help enjoy was actively happening.

Keep in the mind the type of storytelling the author is doing.

Keep in the author’s origins in mind; aka, Hajime Isayama, the author of attack on titan, grew up in Ōita, Japan, which was surrounded by mountains that made him fear the unknown, like the walls in aot.

Keep it mind that you’re reading a TRANSLATION from Japanese, a very unique language, and thus some things may not be correct, especially if the translator has a bias. Aka, in English, Touya is described as “born premature”, but that’s a mistranslation, he’s actually “haya-umare” - born early in the year, important for educational placement. There’s a lot of mistake like that in the Mha English translation and it’s worse in the dub.

A little exercise you can do is read a chapter, summarise it for yourself, look up an online summary and compare it, see how much you got right. If you missed something, reread it.

Research is your best friend, look for objective information, not fandom opinion pieces.

Have we forgotten that the later Harry Potter books (fuck JK Rowling) are upwards of like- 600-700 pages? I read that entire series in 3rd-4th grade (8/9yo). Being able to read a 310 page book was nothing impressive at that age, it was standard, it was expected.

Each of the Percy Jackson books are around 300 pages each. 310 is like- standard novel length for that age group. 310 pages is nothing special or impressive for a kid what is that guy on about?

*cough cough Dabi, All For One, and low-key Tomura too. I'm not an expert in anything but Dabi's eyes would be gone after the war, no way his eyes survived all of that right?!*

i find medical stuff fun to write, but only if i'm writing from the pov of a character who knows medical stuff, because then i'm allowed to know everything and sound like a google search 😭

but with post-war dabi….. there's like no way he has eyes, right? if i ever write post-war dabi, i might just have to invent a dr with an eye-restoring quirk because like….. bbg where're your eyes……..

Alternatively (in this specific case) you could just say that because Dabi’s eyes glow when he’s using his quirk, when it’s going into overdrive like in the final battle they were just glowing so much it obscured the sclera as well. Then, once he, his body, and his quirk cooled off, his eyes lost that glow again and his eyes became visible.

Now this doesn’t mean he gets off Scott free. No. I love giving post-war Dabi more disabilities. Just say his vision was severely damaged, but maintains baseline function, like the rest of his body. Legally blind but not totally blind.
