Things I Think Newbie Tarot Readers Need To Know
1. You can store your decks in whatever way you choose. Thereâs no real right or wrong way, aside from tossing them in the trash. 2. You donât NEED a âsacred spaceâ to read. You can read hanging upside down on the monkey bars if youâre up for a challenge. 3. You donât need to be a witch to read tarot. I say again, YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A WITCH TO READ TAROT. 4. Tarot cards hold as much power as you let them. Some view them as sacred items, others view them as just a fun card game. No one else can tell you how to view them, thatâs just a personal thing. 5. There is no real *set* way to read. The majority of the reading is intuition-based, so trust your gut. 6. You donât need thousands of decks. (Though, I mean, you may want them.) The amount of decks you have/donât have doesnât measure your abilities. 7. Donât get put off by people who think your reading was irrelevant in their life. Sometimes, readings take time to actually manifest. Youâre doing great. Donât let this deter you. 8. The amount of times you cleanse your deck is ENTIRELY up to you. Some people do it after every reading. Some people do it..well, maybe never. The choice is yours. 9. There is no right or wrong way to shuffle your cards. At. All. 10. Sometimes reading for yourself can be hard. Itâs okay to have someone else read for you. Seriously. 11. Donât be intimidated if youâve just started. Weâve all started from day one. 12. You may run into some elitists, and while you shouldnât punch them in the face, you should make sure what they say doesnât make you uncomfortable in how you do things. This is all YOU, not THEM. Feel free to add on to this if yâall have a little something to put.Â

I think it is important to give yourself the permission to be the type of reader that you want to be. Your way of reading, your tools, your ethics, how you perceive divination does not have to mirror someone elseâs and that is perfectly okay. It is okay to be a Tarot rebel, a free thinker and someone whose path beats to its own drum. Own it.

Sigils
these are super cool. They look like you incorporated Hiragana.Â
I did! Japanese is a language I've always been drawn to and after I started studying it it just felt right on my tongue. When I write sigils in theban or english script, I feel no connection to them and they end up being powerless, but these ones I immediately was able to begin the enchantments on and it went so smoothly â¤

Things to Consider in a Tarot Reading (Other Than Card Meanings)
Itâs important to look at the meanings of tarot cards, but itâs very possible to pull even more out of a reading that individual card meanings. Hereâs some other stuff you might consider bringing into your interpretation when it feels right:
đThe position of the cards. This is why spread design can be so important! Iâve had instances where all the cards, in their positions, had the subjects looking or pointing towards one specific card. It was wild. What did it mean? Maybe nothing, but maybe something very significant, depending on the question!
đThe visual element of the cards. Sometimes whatâs depicted on the card can give more specific insight than the actual book meanings. The pictures were done that way for a reason, so donât be afraid to give them their own weight! Also, sometimes the spread as a whole will have a flow of design (like when one half is much brighter than the other) or a specific card is WAY more colorful than the other cards on the table. Any of these could potentially carry meaning.
đJumper cards. This is when a card pops out while youâre shuffling! I usually just put them back⌠UNLESS the question has already been presented, and Iâm shuffling with that question in mind. Then, I keep them as extra advice, bonus cards.
đReoccurring numbers. Maybe you do a four card spread for a friend, and you get the four of cups, four of swords, four of wands, and the Emperor! (IV.) What does that mean? What does the number four symbolize? Well, a lot of things, potentially, depending on what you study. Some tarot designs incorporate the Kabbalahâs numbered paths in the tree of life, others go with numerology. Maybe, the number four just means something special to you or the querent in particular.
đA bunch of cards in order. Iâm not talking about when you forget to shuffle. Iâm talking about when you give it a really good shuffle and you still get the ace, two, and three of Pentacles all in a row. This can be seen as a sign of progression, or that the events are all much more closely connected than anticipated. It can also mean it happens over a shorter period of time than normal. Itâs up to you, your cards, and the contexts.
đProportions of different features. Maybe youâre doing an obstacle spread, and your obstacle is something like the nine of swords. Thatâs pretty nasty, but if all the other cards in the spread are Major Arcana, then itâs probably not going to be that difficult to surmount. The reverse can also be true. Additionally, a high number of reversed cards in a spread typically signifies a lot of confusion, conflict, and turmoil.
đReoccurring symbols. Beyond just the four suits, because thatâs a given! But maybe your spread shows a lot of cards with images of fire, people dancing, or birds. Do these mean anything to you or the querent? What do they typically symbolize?
đAny hiccups or unusual events during the reading. Once I had a querent pick up a card to examine it, drop it, then pick it up and put it back reversed. Since it was the overall outcome card, I interpreted that as a heightened ability to change her own fate in this given situation, since she had turned the card from quite a bad omen to a good one. Sometimes little accidents like dropping cards, accidentally shifting them, or laying out the spread wrong are meant to be there and add to the meaning!
I hope this gives you some ideas! Feel free to add more. What do you interpret alongside the cards in a reading?

I really enjoy being a witch because little kids get really excited when they find out you have cool rocks in your pockets
So I do this spell when I'm feeling pretty dysphoric. You can, of course, adjust it to suit your needs, but I find when I've balanced myself and embraced my non-cisness, my magick is stronger and I feel much more connected to literally everything around me. If anyone needs a transcription, just pm me! NOTE: this spell is NOT meant to make you more cisgender if that's even possible; it's to help you become more comfortable with gender fluidity.
Wow the quality is terrible but I'm starting on the herbalism section of my grimoire and I think I'm gonna illustrate it (but this lined paper is terrible :0 )
My first altar! (But I need some advice đ)
I'm in the process of building my first altar. I'm super excited, but I live in a strictly no-fire building. Incense and fire are no-goes, so what do I do? :( I don't really know how else to activate an altar and eventually I'm going to set off the Ăźber-sensitive fire alarm. What should I do?

Mags talks Tarot: Turning of the Year spread
I created this spread to provide insight into what the outgoing year brought to my life, where I stand now, and what the coming year will bring.
I do mine on 31st October each year but it works equally as well as a New Yearâs Eve spread, or a birthday spread, or at a personally significant point of the year. A proviso of mine is that I will not do this reading twice for one person within the same twelve months and personally feel that it would lose something if it was used more often, however YMMV.
This is a large spread and it usually takes me at least an hour to complete a reading, so youâll want to make sure youâll not be interrupted for a while if you choose to do it.
1. Where I am now in respect of my professional life. 2. Where I am now in respect of my personal life. 3. Where I am now in respect of my inner life. 4. What the past year can teach me about my professional life. 5. What the past year can teach me about my personal life. 6. What the past year can teach me about my inner life. 7. What the coming year will bring me in respect of my professional life. 8. What the coming year will bring me in respect of my personal life. 9. What the coming year will bring me in respect of my inner life. 10. Month 1 (starting with the month following the day of the reading â so for a New Yearâs reading, this would be January) 11. Month 2 12. Month 3 13. Month 4 14. Month 5 15. Month 6 16. Month 7 17. Month 8 18. Month 9 19. Month 10 20. Month 11 21. Month 12
The first nine cards need no explanation as to what they are there to do, however I would say that you are at perfect liberty to change the focus of this spread if the professional/personal/inner life is not the best fit for you. Â Iâve also read this spread using emotionally/physically/spiritually, financially/physically/intellectually, and body/mind/spirit â itâs all about whatâs important to you. Use it to look into the three things that what you want to focus on in the coming year.
The final twelve cards are intended to elucidate on the themes provided by cards 7, 8 & 9 and to give a flavour of what each month may hold. They benefit from being looked at as a group rather than taking each card in isolation. Read them as a story about your journey through the coming year!
I also recommend taking into account the balance of the spread as you read:
Major vs Minor arcana; which are there more of?
If itâs major, then the coming year is going to be a very significant one. If they are clustered in one part of the year, then itâs giving you a much more specific timeline pointer, if they are spread evenly then it may be that the whole year will be important.
In relation to the minor arcana alone âŚ
Which suit appears the most? Which suit appears the least? Is there a suit that doesnât appear at all?
This will give you an indication of the theme of your year and indicate which areas of your life might be neglected unless you make an effort to focus on them.
Number wise, are you getting mostly low numbers, mostly high numbers or a mix?
These can give an indication of the stage youâre at with whatever element of your life is being highlighted by the cards and give you pointers as to where you need to grow.
Are there more court cards than number cards?
If so, it may be that your life is being strongly influenced by specific people, or it might be that these represent elements of yourself that will come into play at that time, or elements that you need to focus on.
If you have a card you use as a significator* âŚ.
Did it appear? If so where?
One interpretation is that this is the point in the year (or element of the year past/ present/ to come if it turns up in cards 1 to 9) that is going to be particularly pertinent to you. When my significator turns up in this spread I usually draw an additional clarifier card (after Iâve finished drawing the rest of the spread) for that position to identify what it is about that point in the reading that is so personal.
On that note, please donât be afraid to pull a clarifier card if there is an area of the spread that doesnât make sense. However do make sure that youâve thoroughly thought about the cards youâve drawn before you start doing so. If you look at the spread and your gut reaction is to pull a host of clarifiers please be honest with yourself as to why youâre doing it. If it isnât that you donât understand what the cards mean but instead that you donât like what theyâre saying, itâs better to face up to that element of the reading (and possibly set aside some time to do a separate, focused reading specifically to work through that issue) than to draw another card in the hope that it will make the problem go away.
And finally ⌠please also remember that this reading a snapshot of the year ahead at the moment you pull the cards â not a set in stone prediction that cannot be changed. This is going to give you an idea of what may happen so that you can get ready to meet it, allowing you to seize opportunities the year may bring and prepare/guard against the not-so-good things (forewarned is forearmed, after all!). Itâs a spread to help you make the best of whatever comes your way and is not supposed to create anxiety or become something to beat yourself up about.
If you use the spread, please do let me know if it helped and if you tweak it (which youâre obviously more than welcome to do) please share that too!
*A significator is a card chosen from the deck that represents either you (if youâre reading for yourself) or the questioner (if youâre reading for someone else). Some people, myself included, have a card they identify with most and thus the appearance of it can be used as an additional element in readings. If you donât have a significator, please donât feel that you need to choose one!
Bringing this back for anyone wanting an in-depth spread for the year ahead!
Doing this tonight
Just done this spread, and at first glance this looks like it could be significant for me. Iâm going to sleep on it and have a second look at it in the morning as Iâm tired and not trusting my judgement rn. Iâll also post photos tomorrow. Wifi being wonky.
I did a different New Yearâs Spread last night and did this one today. Itâs really interesting seeing how they differ - Major Arcana cards tended to pop up in regards to inner/spiritual things. Both spreads seem to tell me a story of emotional struggle and healing and opportunities. Seems like lots of good to balance out the unexpected and uncertain.
I should this tonightÂ
readings at 300 fox wayÂ
