Rewatching Wednesday
Look I've been a huge fan of Tim Burton's work literally since I can remember but if HE WRITES WEDNESDAY TO BE WITH ANYONE BUT ENID I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM. I will not be able to watch ANY of his other works without being CONSUMED BY RAGE because my YURI ISN'T CANON! There are two paths that I will be happy with: AroAce Wednesday, or Wenclair. No exceptions. If she ends up with fucking Tyler I'm actually going to commit so much arson.
Trying that good ol' angelic charm
“how can you ship them, they’re just friends”
“you just have a fetish for making canonically straight characters gay”
“they’re minors!!!”
but you’ll ship them with their friends of the opposite gender, regardless of whether they have romantic chemistry and ignore the fact that most characters aren’t canonically assigned a sexuality, and are capable of being attracted to more than one gender.
Okay So I was thinking and I think and if I was ever to do a Worm rewrite fanfiction (which will never happen because whenever I try to write anything resembling a story I become five years old mentally) these would be the things that I changed:
By all rights Taylor should be more leftists in nature, what with her being the child of a man that is a leading member of a dockworkers union and a woman who was part of a radical feminist movement and only really left because things started getting a little terrorist-y in tone. I’m not saying she would be screaming marxist theory from the rooftops or anything, she’s like fifteen after all, but the influences SHOULD be there.
I imagine that how this would play out, beyond Taylor being raised in such a way by two loving parents, is that after her mother’s death Taylor looks for any possible way to connect to her mother after death. She plays her mother’s flute (that will later be broken) to hell and back, practices on her mother’s piano, and most importantly reads her mother’s literature.
Rosa Luxemburg, Franz Fanon, The Communist Manifesto, etc. She would read all of these things from a sense of grief, and her general enjoyment of reading, internalizes a LOT of it. Combine her mother’s more intellectual concept of politics and the rage she inherited from her father and that creates some interesting possibilities for Warlord Taylor down the line.
I would also get rid of the romance between her and brian. I love the two characters and individually they are great but as a couple I find them improbably banal. Instead I would make Taylor’s romantic interest be Lisa (hell yeah smugbug). It goes without saying for a lot of people but Lisa and Taylor’s whole thing is so good that I just go rabid everytime.
To further this I will say that Taylor, when she was younger, had a very deep crush on Emma that more or less bordered on genuine love. So when Emma goes and stomps all over that it breaks Taylor’s heart in a slightly different way.
So, when Taylor decides that she can’t fight back, while the canonical inner excuse that it wouldn't be right, she also simply can’t bring herself to do it because it’s Emma. Also, I think this can help Lisa and Taylor grow closer with Taylor confiding More in the blond and Lisa, in turn, confiding more in Taylor. So, when the conflict with Coil comes to a head Taylor isn't simply just fighting to save Dinah, she’s also fighting to free Lisa from Coil’s entrapment.
(Also, just a small little tidbit: I like the idea of Taylor being fluent in French. Her father's last name is French in origin and Annette's name is also French in origin so I think it would be amusing if that was just a little thing she could do. Hell Alec seems like the type that would know French for some reason so maybe they communicate in only French during a team up.)
When the slaughterhouse nine comes around and chaos is being spread I feel that I would let Danny learn that Taylor is in fact skitter, and due to small changes in actions and general perception he gives his approval and says he’s proud of her.
Personally I’m debating on whether or not it should happen (ultimately up to whoever takes up this monumental task) is that during Coil’s attempt at taking over Danny is killed in the explosion at the mayoral debate. This is to further radicalize Taylor into her warlord-ing activities but I can also see a lighter version where Danny is simply paralyzed from the waist down.
This also brings me into: Ward Taylor would be cut. In general I am not a fan of it and instead I would keep Taylor a Warlord over Brockton Bay (let Skitter be the bond villain she was always meant to be damnit, lol). Seeing her actually cultivate that actual position would be incredibly satisfying.
She is ultimately authoritarian but it is undeniable that she is also helping the people. The situation in Brockton slowly becoming better over time with Skitter’s actions, with leftist tactics being implemented- if with Taylor’s own personal biblical flair.
And of course it would have a happy ending, still the end of the world as we see in Ward but I feel like it would be to a lesser extent. It’s more of a happy ending for the undersiders honestly, them in the distance while smugbug raise their adopted kids while being gang bosses.
I am unsure how to properly implement it but I would like For Taylor and Lisa to grow closer to Aiden (and the rest of the chicken tenders). With them, over time, becoming his adoptive parents- Unofficially and then officially.

… yeah
I will say that for quite a long time now I have very much enjoyed the Beta AU for Toh (typically the edgier interpretations due to personal taste).
But something that I find interesting, if a little disappointing is that it's never taken to it's true extreme if that makes sense. For example, I will use the Concept art for Hunter:
He's obviously on the younger side and his general vibe is quite a bit different and I have NEVER seen it used in a Beta AU fanfic. And I think that's an utter shame.
I think it could be very interesting, while reading a Beta fic where Lucia, while dealing with her friendship to Willow and her Hateboner/romance with Amelia she also has to contend with this relationship with Hunter, coming to view this relative of the emperor as a younger sibling that she feels protective over (I imagine she's like seventeen-eighteen in this).
And since Gus has remained relatively the same throughout the story I think he and Hunter could be friends, as opposed to other options
while discussing our favourite yuri ships we remembered the best one ever

The Fundamental difference, in my mind, between Smugbug and Pillbug is that Pillbug would join each other in a downward spiral before deciding to fuck off and go live on a farm with each other until they fall over from old age.
Smugbug, on the other hand, would feed off of each other's respective capabilities/trauma's and soon they would be ruling over Brockton. Lisa scheming and Taylor watching, ever intimidating.
This is not to say that either is superior fanon this is just the road they both lead down in my mind a good 90% of the time.
Snatched waist
I'm attempting to read Worm again and I'm finding an interesting read in the idea that Taylor Herbert isn't necessarily transgender, but that she nonetheless gets lumped in with 'the trannies'. Her masculine features are brought attention to as a major source of her bullying. While she envies more traditional feminity in a way that could be read as gender dysphoria, her overall relationship to womanhood feels more like a knife to the back. The story brings attention to the fact that one of her best friends had no issue viewing her as a sister until one day she arbitrarily begun enacting transmisogynistic violence upon her. Society by default viewed her as a woman, and then it didn't.
In the first few chapters I really feel Taylor struggling with this contradiction - the fact that being cis isn't saving her from being the victim of transmisogyny. She's a deeply analytical person digging into all the ways the world works to try and find some reason womanhood isn't working for her. It's telling that the first chapter features her attempting to take refuge in a bathroom. She's calculated that it's the place she's likely to face the least amount of harassment. She has bought into the idea that restrooms and other gender-segregated spaces are meant to be a safe haven for women.
It doesn't work. Her tormenters find her there too.
The reason this reading interests me is because a theme starts to emerge in the first few chapters. Despite Taylor looking down on those more destitute then her, she has more in common with the ostracized 'crackpots and whores' then the superheroes she looks up to. It's only fitting that she has more in common with trans women then she'd like to admit.
Lisa discovers Taylor's planning to turn herself in to the PRT post echidna and decides to use her (now bottomless) well of wealth and resources to make sure there's a constant stream of low level threats in the bay. All so Taylor never feels like she has a chance to leave.
18 months and 150 cape mercenary groups later Taylor started to get suspicious. At this point Lisa will have to try really feeding her ecstasy.
Taylor: "hey are you hiring a bunch of people to run around and pretend to be evil so that I don't leave?"
Lisa: "nononono no why would you think that anyway we gotta beat this new secret never heard of before gang led by someone who may or may not be purity's third cousin once removed. we can only beat them by makingout by the w ay"
Taylor realising this is the 3rd villain group she's faced that can only be beaten by fake dating Lisa.
