in the moonstream of my imagination

in Colors is an exploration of color, because color does so much more than make things visually appealing. it has the potential to emphasize as well as detracts. it can unify forms and it can break them apart. for my book, however, i chose to focus on the unifying & emphasizing role that colors can take on. i tried to capture “plain” scenes that are often overlooked by all of us as we go on with our busy lives. i took photos of plants, benches, doors, and other normal things that surround us & make up the environments we inhabit. i focused on the things that were surround by more monochromatically colored objects in order to show the ability color has to emphasize and underscore. against these plainer objects, the subject with the brighter color truly stands out. i accompanied these photos with quotes i found on the internet regarding color. quotes like “To me, color is like the finishing touch on everything” by Marc Jacobs express the great deal of importance that many people have for color. ultimately, my book is about showing that color plays more than just one role at any given time in our frame of vision, and i hope that those who look at it walk away with a new appreciation for color and perhaps a new perspective on it as well.

perhaps i can focus on showcasing all the colors of daily life through a book. with this third proposal, i think i will try to emphasize mundane objects through color. i’ll look for places that are mainly white, black & grey that have something with a pop of color. the monochromatic backgrounds will really make the colored object stand out &, although it’ll be a really generic object such as a door or a chair, make it seem special. 

in this second proposal for the final project, i am interested in capturing emotions. walking around campus, you see so many different people who are expressing all the different emotions on different scales. there is so much variation in these expressions & hopefully, i’ll be able to capture that wide variety by taking photos of strangers as they smile, laugh, cry, etc. 

for the final project, i’d like to focus on photographs the depict my everyday life in an effort to share with others in a visual form that we all go through similar things. i’ll take photos as i walk around during the day.

sometime last month, he shared with me that he always wanted to be a model and that he would probably pursue it seriously if he thought he actually had a shot at it. i told him he totally had a shot at it because since he is a dancer, he is so aware of his movements and could totally strike some good poses in front of the camera. i told him the camera wold absolutely love him and that he shouldn't feel like he couldn't do anything he wanted to do. so we set up a date to go shooting, and while he was shy in front of the camera initially, he really warmed up as the day went by. through this project, i aimed to prove to him that he could definitely be a model if he wanted to, but i hope that these photos can be used to reassure anyone that they have the ability to do anything they want to as long as they believe they can.

seldom is there ever any human presence that can survive for a long period of time without drainage and sewage systems. in a sense, the pipes that are involved in these intricate systems act as the bloodstream for any civilization. they are vital to all inhabitants if they hope to remain in the same place for many years. wet, the establishment of a human presence in nature is often depicted as a terrible, destructive thing. while that may be true, i decided i wanted to offer a different perspective on the relationship between man-made objects and nature. i believe there is a utopia within the presence of both natural and unnatural. the sheer fact that they are allowed to co-exist within the same space at the same time is utopian to me and i feel that the objects realize this too. the playfulness that the organic beings display toward their inorganic counterparts suggests their fascination with them. to me, that is proof that nature is not appalled by what man has to create, but is instead intrigued by these structures. in return, the bloodstreams of each civilization embrace the curious tendencies of the natural specimen by allowing themselves to be surrounded and touched by them.  

going back to Ryan, i recently found out that he feels an tremendous disassociation with adults, despite his 20 years of age. he confessed to me that he'd always much rather deal with children than adults at any time, but because he doesn't have that option, he often spends his time alone. he said that he really likes kids because they say all sorts of things (these things can be profound, they can be innocent, they can be wacky, & they can be downright evil) & he admires that they can get away with it all because of their age. he also mentioned that he really enjoyed his childhood and his upbringing. he shared that he spent his elementary school years in the south and described that time as being the most carefree and blissful years of his life. because of this, i think it'd be a great idea to capture Ryan reliving his childhood. i think it'd be interesting to ask him afterwards if recreating his childhood caused him to appreciate it even more or if it did something else. 

i recently made a new friend within the past 2 weeks & as i've been getting to know him, i've been noticing an incredible amount of selflessness within him. he goes by Rain & he is so selfless that he often does things that other people, such as his parents, want him to do because he wants to make the happy. because of this, Rain can speak for hours about all the things he wants to do but hasn't done. he has many wishes that he can't realize right now because he's too busy pleasing everyone else. often, this sort of situation could make someone feel unhappy, but i don't think that's the case with Rain. at least, he hasn't yet expressed any feelings of discontent to me yet. i was thinking for this 2nd proposal to perhaps photograph him either indulging in the things he wishes he could be doing, such as playing in a band, or photograph him doing the things he's doing for others, such as going to college. i'm not sure if i want to make this series one of making dreams come true or one that emphasizes the dreariness of doing things you'd rather not be doing. 

this particular color is simply named “Blue”.

please pardon the very obvious lack of inspiration as i am currently trying to figure out a new direction to take these daily photos in.

i'll try to make things seem bigger by using telephoto lenses to fill in more of the space within my frames. i will also try to capture these things being beautifully larger than us. my example showcases this building reflecting the sunset through its windows. 

to approach this idea, i will try to capture photos with warm colors within them, as warmth often translates into comfort. i will subtly introduce the "evil" so that it doesn't overpower all the "good." 

to capture these beautiful, hidden moments, i will wander aimlessly within my surroundings and be still as i look around to capture fleeting moments of happiness, joy, comfort, etc. i will utilize small f-numbers to create a dream-like feel within the shallow depths-of-field. i will also try to capture things of vivid colors, so as to add to the dreaminess.
