lynne waxes rhapsodic about august 1 primary election
lynne drinks champagne and fills out her ballot
in this facebook live video i share my endorsements for the king county WA august 1 primary.
((contains several instances of profanity)
endorsements summary: mayor: hasegawa/farrell/i understand if you need to vote for oliver pos. 8: teresa mosqueda pos. 9: lorena gonzalez king county exec: dow constantine port of seattle commissioners: claudia kauffman and brooks salazar king county prop 1 access for all: YES 45th district senate: manka dhingra burien city council: pedro olguin, jimmy matta, nancy tosta, krystal marx
(negative) time-stamps of subject changes.
-26:05 – this is the closest you’re going to get to drinking and filling out your ballot with leslie knope
-25:30 – August 1 primary, ballots due at 8pm
-24:49 – seattle mayor – dual endorsement, Hasegawa and Farrell. Oliver is also acceptable but inexperienced and undisciplined in learning about policy
-23:20 – seattle city council pos. 8 – Teresa mosqueda. King County Executive – Dow Constantine.
23:00 – “why are there so many pieces of paper in this envelope?” – walk-thru the ballot, ballot drop boxes. They’ll have replacement envelopes at the ballot box. Print a new ballot online if you lost yours or your dog ate it or whatever. Vote.wa.gov
22:00 – king county prop. 1, Access for All – vote yes. I know it’s regressive. Sales tax is literally the only form of taxing authority king county is. .1 percent means the average household will contribute about $30 a year.
19:15 – port of seattle commissioner, pos. 1 – Claudia Kauffman – meets my criteria
-18:50 – my dad’s main concern on port commissioner race – Ivar’s airport lease renewal
-17:06 – 45th district special senate election – as a Democrat I have to endorse Manka Dinghra – two centrist women of color both campaigning on no state income tax which is already unconstitutional – determines control of the state senate, currently the GOP has a 2-vote majority.
-14:20 – “sometimes you gotta drink some champagne and make a choice, because politics is emotional and it’s based on feelings.”
-13:37 – city council positions – political parties serve the function of a ballpark of political views, giving you an idea of what the candidate thinks
-12:20 – “I don’t trust libertarians running for city council”
-11:45 – “city of seattle mayor? Whew, that is just a heck of a race y’all”
-10:45 – asks family if they have their ballots; champagne shimmy
-10:20 – mom asks about burien city council candidates views on homelessness
-9:45 – mom asks, “is anyone proposing tiny houses built on public property by volunteers?” “are we partnering with any organizations to help provide solutions to homelessness”
-8:40 – mom and Abigail make a silly “tosta” joke
-8:20 – amber asks “where do I go for my local city stuff?” – google “your city” blog”
-7:45 – leg.wa.gov/districtfinder – find your district
-7:22 – lynne waxes rhapsodic about Information Services at the leg and how they make all the sites the government uses
-7:10 – lynne walks you through how districtfinder works
-6:20 – lynne rants about state party organization and walks you through how to find yor local district’s endorsements -5:55 – “if their website is good, it’ll be easy to find. If their website is terrible, it won’t be easy to find, and I’m sorry”
-5:35 – also check candidates’ websites because they’ve probably listed their endorsements
-5:10 – seattle city council postion 9 – lorena gonzelez – re-elect lorena gonzalez. Knows what she’s doing
-4:50 – school district campaigns – vote in them! -4:40- sean champagne is pretty handsome…I am just saying.
-4:20 – when voting in school district elections, decide how you feel about charter schools, then look at candidates and figure out how they feel – through endorsements, donations, statements
-3:56 – drink.
-3:46 – my thoughts on charter schools – the point of privatizing things is to make money, so I get real skeptical…
slightly conflates voucher system and charter schools, which I realize
24:16 -2:20 – “it’s also private management of public funds”
-2:00 – in theory, electing these people gives them accountability. In a charter school, you don’t have any say in the
-1:34 – people on both sides of the aisle (when people say that, it means both republicans and democrats because in the senate there’s an aisle down the middle – it’s kind of dumb)
lynne waxes rhapsodic about her own possible dream hippie charter school of classical education and theatre…
“finish off your champagne - just make a choice – it’s the primary – you gotta like, get a little tipsy and just have fun with it, because politics is personal, and it is a lot about how you feel about that person. Watch video of them talking, decide if you like the person. Would you hire this person? Is this person going to make it easier for everyone to get their work done, or harder?”

The distance around Lake Union, which I used to RUN, is now more of a walk/run situation. Felt good to revisit that pavement, retrace the steps I covered so many times. . . . . . #nofilter #tbt #running #redhead #seattle #lakeunion #reclaiming #reclaimdiscoverproject (at Gas Works Park)
I have lived in a suburb of Seattle my entire life. I have traveled, to Canada and Mexico and Europe and a Caribbean cruise and many western US states, and I have lived in other places in and around the city for various periods of time, but I currently live with my parents in the house I grew up in.
I have begun to hate this city.
I hate it because it is so familiar. I have been everywhere. I have seen everything.
In a few months I am leaving to travel, to a certain purpley-red state and then to the UK until Christmas, and after I return I plan on living elsewhere. For a while.
I do not want to leave this city hating it. I have started to make my peace with Seattle by visiting places that are full of memories. I’m reclaiming those places and taking them with me.
I’ve also started to seek out new-to-me places. It is rare to find something in and around Seattle I have not been to or have some kind of connection to. I need to find new places and rediscover why people want to live here anyway. I want to learn to love this city again before I leave.
He’s a tourist. He vacations in people’s lives, takes pictures, puts them in his scrapbook, and moves on. All he’s interested in are stories. Basically, Leslie, he’s selfish. And you’re not. That’s why you don’t like him.

'After an Absence' by Linda Pastan, and the literary and historical notes for Thursday, June 8, 2006.
I think the Writer’s Almanac is one of the strangest, most bizarre, yet loveliest pieces of media available to us. today’s news that Garrison Keillor suffered a seizure over the last weekend, yet still plans on performing the five remaining scheduled shows before retiring, inspired me to look up this poem that’s been stuck in my head for weeks (I must have caught a replay, because it was definitely not in 2006...).
Speedy recovery to Mr. Keillor, and thanks for providing listeners with serene moments of inspiration on the daily.
After an Absence
After an absence that was no one's fault
we are shy with each other,
and our words seem younger than we are,
as if we must return to the time we met
and work ourselves back to the present,
the way you never read a story
from the place you stopped
but always start each book all over again...
Potential answers to the question "So what are you doing after graduation?"
Massive art project involving writing twelve million love letters to democracy in honor of the twelve million dollars spent on the worthless Washington state primary, all symbolically addressed to Secretary of State Kim Wyman.
Going on a long road trip, visiting all my ex-boyfriends, crying a lot, writing a shitty novel, a sort of post-post-modern version of The Bell Jar crossed with A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, in perfect APA format.
Moving to a small town in a state I don’t know the capitol of and living alone with my cat, not speaking to anyone I know for an entire year.
Continuing to eke out a meager existence within 15 miles of where I grew up, like the vast majority of all humans that have ever existed.
