Aaaah I’m upset about this article I read about Santa Muerte. I’m not sure if it’s appropriate for white peoples to worship her because of her history. She was worshipped by the Aztecs, as well as older societies. When the Spaniards came to Mexico, they forced the religion out of the Axtecas. And in strength, in resistance, the indigenous people inserted their religious figures into Catholicism. The saints represented gods, Jesus and God represented two of the main gods in Aztec religion. The Virgin Mary is so venerated by Mexican Catholics because she was secretly the symbol of an Aztec fertility goddess who was extremely important to them. And Santa Muerte, my deity, started off as the goddess of the underworld. And over time, she transformed into a Saint, a god worshipped by the least fortunate in Mexican society, and also those that need the most protection. Poor people, queer people, people involved in sex work. Does this represent white people? Sometimes. But not often. And the white people that worship her, are they suffering in society? Or are they profiting off their veneration of her, with their college degrees in religious studies, their pay to view websites, or websites full of ads, their fancy churches. Do they need her? Or could they find the same spiritual relief in another death deity? Do they really have to take mine, and make her theirs?

But setting all that aside, this article was especially infuriating.
