when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.
Trans activist Jamison Green's passport photos before and after HRT. Left he's age 32 (1980) Right age 41 (1989) after being on testosterone for one year (x)
(read his autobiography here for free)
updated the link to his autobiography because it was broken! here's some more pictures of him (first is mid 90s, second 2013 and last 2024)
there's an interview with him from 2017 along with some information about his life and activism. and he was interviewed on a podcast here. he's not super well known but has been a really important trans activist for decades

I love when someone is explaining instructions to a group I’m in and they look at me and it reminds them to say something about using preferred names/pronouns or that there’s vegan food options available. I go by my given name/pronouns and I’m not vegan but I’m proud that I can provide this service
i was in the supermarket and a guy looked at me and calls over to his wife like "honey what are we having for dinner tonight?" and when she told him he nodded and, still staring directly at my shirt, said "i'll get some garlic bread"

Heatwave Recipe Recommendations
The heat’s been brutal this summer but we still gotta eat! If you’re like me, heat might suppress your appetite, and the last thing any of us want is to sweat over a hot stove and oven when it’s already boiling outside. Here are some of my favorite hot-weather recipes to keep hydrated and fed with when the weather is unbearable! (All recipes should be un-paywalled).
NYT’s best gazpacho (lives up to its name!!)
Persian cold cucumber soup (if you like tzatziki you will like this!)
Eric Kim’s cold noodles with tomato (infinitely riffable Korean flavor profile — for a creamier and less brothy take, try these cold sesame noodles too)
Vietnamese chicken and herb salad (this is an excellent time to get a rotisserie chicken so you don’t have to turn the oven on)
Radish sandwiches with butter and salt (and in a similar vein, if you dig this flavor combo you should try this Polish cottage cheese dip on some good rye bread or even crackers)
It’s still a little early in the season, but you can never go wrong with a BLT (or, if you don’t eat bacon, try this tomato furikake sandwich in its place)
Infinite iterations of pasta salad! You can use anything you got but here is a template I like.
Assorted dense bean salads. This back pocket canned salad is a weird combo of jarred ingredients but it slaps, this hoagie-inspired one is super satisfying, and cowboy caviar is a classic for a reason.
Poke bowls! Canned tuna mixed with some kewpie mayo and sriracha is a budget-friendly riff on the usual ahi and makes everything taste like a spicy tuna roll, but use whatever proteins you like, this is more of a loose template.
Please feel free to add some of your own favorite summer recipes in the replies and comments! We’ll get through this together. 🤝🤝🤝
If you can buy pre cooked or canned beets at the store, chłodnik (beet yogurt soup) is a great choice. You can leave out the radishes if you can’t get them.
I also love sardines on fresh bread and butter with assorted vegetables. Buy the fanciest canned sardines you can afford but even regular ones are pretty good. Plus, very healthy!
hey don't cry. on december 3, 1926, agatha christie went missing for eleven days and because the uk police didn't know what to do they recruited sir arthur conan doyle, creator of master detective sherlock holmes, but all he did was conduct a séance to try and contact her distressed spirit
I have a theory that people who say they're "afraid of clowns" largely are not, in the sense of actually having a phobia, and what they mean is "clowns creep me out," and what they mean by THAT is "clowns make me uncomfortable, because they dress and speak and move and act in ways that I do not necessarily expect or have a social script for so they make me feel wrong-footed and self conscious and confused because the interaction and behavior does not make sense to me,"
and honestly the way that I feel about THAT is, "ok, so now imagine that you live in clown world and everyone you encounter is clowns and all the institutions you are forced to navigate are clown institutions run by clowns. that is life as an autistic person"
anthropologist on Mars/the only human in Clown World. pick your analogy
if you ever interact with someone who is mentally ill/mad/pathologised or disabled in some way, assume they are trying hard enough. act as if they are trying hard enough. dont even consider it an option that they arent trying hard enough. if they are failing to meet some goal or expectation, it is despite trying hard enough.
It’s Fossil Friday, so soar into the weekend with Archaeopteryx! When this dinosaur was first described in 1861, it caused a sensation. Discovered shortly after Charles Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by means of natural selection, Archaeopteryx provided an example of evolution in action—a fossil that showed the transition between reptiles and birds. The first Archaeopteryx fossils ever found included exquisitely preserved skeletons with clear imprints of wings and feathers, but also teeth and a bony tail. Today, scientists think Archaeopteryx wasn’t able to fly very well, but the species still represents a turning point in paleontologists’ understanding of the relationship between ancient dinosaurs and modern birds in the design of both its body and brain. You can spot Archaeopteryx, and so much more, at the Museum! Plan your visit.

You should be immediately suspicious of anyone who tries to convince you to hate other trans people.
one of those things that irritates us maybe much more than it should, is how people say "you can't kill dogs in movies". and making it such a rule that ever hurting or injuring a dog clearly denotes terrible moral character, in a way that SPECIFICALLY singles out dogs (even when they might say "animal" - all their examples are still dogs) as special, and even to a point where it's a mark against a movie if the dog dies. like. the website for listing content warnings for movies is called does the dog die.
and it's like. every time we watch a movie with a spider, that spider is almost guaranteed to die. we are going to watch someone kill that animal, and it'll be a joke, or a heroic moment, or a sign that someone's coming to help. we struggle to think of movies where there's a spider as an animal where it does not get killed. even when they're small glimpses, spiders are considered animals that must die. even the spider in charlotte's web dies at the end. at no point does anyone consider showing the mangled, erupted remains of a spider, often still twitching, to be any aspect of gore or worthy of a second glance, that being upset by it is clearly just you being unreasonable.
and it's like. at this point we're just going to make a rule that every single dog that shows up in something we write has to die horrifically as a joke and every single spider lives or is only hurt to show how truly amoral another character is.
I don’t care if Monday’s yuck
Tuesday, Wednesday tread through muck
Thursday maybe eat a duck
It’s Friday, Flat as Fuck
This is an anti-despair checkpoint! You must share something you're looking forward to before scrolling on.
