A Choir AU in which Tom Kazansky is smitten with Pete Mitchell from first sight, but their initial spark turns into jealousy and hurt when Pete doesn't keep a promise. Inspired by Antonio Estevez's Cantata Criolla Gentle Rivals to Lovers if you squint. Hurt and jealously turn into attraction. --- The stranger was alight with a joy Tom hadn’t seen so genuinely given in a long time. Those he found himself typically surrounded by wore masks of amusement; comedy and tragedy in their own right. In the rooms Tom found himself in on a typical day he felt like a court jester among stanch aristocracy, the soul of a performer tucked away in a too stiff suit, his tie a constant reminder of his too neat speech pulled tight against his neck. There were few places and times where he felt the joy radiate through him authentically. Typically he was on a stage, performing to a backdrop of music that made his soul sway. A tuxedo felt more at home than a traditional suit, his voice an instrument of story telling. He felt connected there, to something larger than himself.

It had taken Bradley four years to join the Navy after his uncles had successfully pulled his papers. It had taken him even longer to attempt to come to terms with the permanent consequences that still haunted him as a result. Mav had been right—losing a wingman had shattered him. Following his uncles to Scotland and fleeing the military had been the next logical option. What better way to bond with them and escape the pressures of his old job? It certainly wasn’t as if he had anyone back home to lose—no partner, no family, nothing. But somehow that all changes upon meeting Jake Seresin, a man who was as shifty as they come. All Jake ever talked about was a desire to go back home, though he never seemed willing to leave. Add in a lost sealskin coat that Jake refused to return without, and suddenly, Bradley was caught in the middle of something he never thought existed. He still wanted Jake safe, though. That was all it was—Bradley promised. It’s not as if Jake was married or anything…right?

Chicago is about as close to a foreign planet as it gets, compared to California, and the life Pete makes there is nothing like the one he lost. He thinks it's better that way. Tom Kazansky is an unexpected bump in the road.
