However, right when he's at his weakest, Hell takes the opportunity to lead him astray. The first time Jake tried to get his Sunday morning coffee and found none other than Rooster at the best table by the window, he could have believed it was happenstance. The second, sure, it could have been a coincidence. The third time, though, was when he started to consider that it might be enemy action.

"What do you really want?" Tom asks, a hair too desperate than he intended. "To be friends." Pete says it so slowly, as if he’s explaining the concept for someone who has never heard it before. "Why?" The word breaks out of Tom like it’s trying to escape before he shuts it away. "Because otherwise the whole circuit is going to be miserable,” Pete says fiercely. His expression, Tom is horrified to realize, is his determined game face, the same one Pete wears on the court. Tom thinks that it might be match point in Pete’s favor and he hadn’t even realized they were playing. “This sport can tear people down. I refuse to be one of them.”

It’s Pete’s first year on the circuit and he’s determined to keep his head above water. Far too many people worked together to get him here and he’s not about to let them down.

Tom has no interest in making friends, but that won’t stop Pete.

When Goose dies, all anyone seems concerned with is how quickly they can get Maverick back in the air and flying like himself again. Ice has a problem with that. He's been there. He knows what it's like to lose someone who is so a part of you that it feels like losing an organ. He knows what repressing and ignoring that grief can do and he can't stand the thought of that happening to someone so full of life as Pete Mitchell. So he makes it his own personal mission to help him cope and heal. Maybe he'll even heal himself along the way.

Maverick has died and everyone is worried about Rooster. Jake's as surprised as everyone else to realize he is as well. Not that he'll admit it. Not out loud. Sucks for him that actions always speak louder than words.

Luckily, they are able to swim to a small island to take stock of their injuries and wait for help to arrive. But rescue is slow to come. With no way to communicate with the ship, and their emergency supplies running low, their situation quickly becomes very dire. Maverick and Iceman have so much unresolved between them, but time may be running out.

Hurt and jealously turn into attraction. --- The stranger was alight with a joy Tom hadn’t seen so genuinely given in a long time. Those he found himself typically surrounded by wore masks of amusement; comedy and tragedy in their own right. In the rooms Tom found himself in on a typical day he felt like a court jester among stanch aristocracy, the soul of a performer tucked away in a too stiff suit, his tie a constant reminder of his too neat speech pulled tight against his neck. There were few places and times where he felt the joy radiate through him authentically. Typically he was on a stage, performing to a backdrop of music that made his soul sway. A tuxedo felt more at home than a traditional suit, his voice an instrument of story telling. He felt connected there, to something larger than himself.
