So for those who haven’t opened the link, this post essentially says that Dick’s canon over-sexualization and his Romani heritage are not a coincidence.

This made me curious, so I did some quick googling. It appears Dick being Romani was established in Gotham Knights #20, which released in 2001.

Dick was sexualized before this point, so at least the initial behavior can’t be blamed on his heritage.

HOWEVER

The person who wrote this comic was Devin Grayson. Who also did the Tarantula arc, as well as the Nightwing and Huntress mini series I went over a while back, and a lot of the other Nightwing-related content for the era. In my opinion, this era is what established the modern sexualization of Dick — which is far more pervasive and far more explicit.

Seeing as the person who led this change also canonized Dick to be Romani at exactly the same time, it’s hard not to feel like Devin had at least a minor subconscious connection between the two.

Keep in mind that I don’t hate Devin Grayson’s work. She touched a lot of, well, touchy subjects, but a lot of it was drawn from personal experience. And sometimes it’s important for stories to touch on the rawer, grittier side of life. Things like sexualization and assault.
