Theory Thursday Part 2...Covid has changed the approach, everything requires more thought. This subject wasn’t comfortable with me photographing in his home as is the norm for this magazine client, nor did he want to leave the property as to avoid interactions with the public. His only location for me was a 15x15 spot of “yard” in open sun in front of his house. I needed 4-5 different shots for the story, one being “on white”. With the sun being high I needed to control it on him...solution, 8x8 frame overhead draped with some black muslin I usually pull out for shooting cars in the studio, i hung it over the side the sun was stronger on and more open on the shade side. One light was used to light the subject...36” round deep parabolic bank with a egg crate grid over the front diffusion. I shot these all with an 85mm lens at f/2 to make the background nebulous shapes. For the white background...I love putting people against a window, blowing it out and letting light wrap them like a lovers hug....no windows here...but I did have a 4x8 scrim with white fabric. That was about 2’ behind him, a bare tube strobe was placed about 3 feet behind that inline with his head...powered about 3 stops over the front light. From there interactions, connecting, capturing, leaving the subject thinking they just had a pretty good time with something they have done all the time or never before. Make it special. Make it yours. No retouching, just a little nudge of contrast/brightness otherwise 100% in camera. Guess the light modifier, number of lights, how the background was done, bonus foe focal length.
