I posted something else, but then deleted it because that’s not where I want to start. Where I want to start is this panel right here.
The moment Mo says goodbye to He Tian. He sets is earrings (engagement ring) down on the counter, next to their adopted child. He’s saying goodbye. He’s either going to shi lei to fight to the death or to be broken. Either way, he’s not coming back. Some might say he just didn’t want to risk this set of studs, but this feels far more symbolic than that. If he simply wanted to protect them, he could have put them anywhere. But he put them somewhere obvious that He Tian could find them.
EDIT: @epizit pointed out in comments that these are the broken studs. Old memory and slow feeding of chapters made me forget that point. So Mo is taking the broken studs with him. This changes my view slightly, though not completely. Taking the broken students, the symbol of his freedom, his choice to reclaim what the piercing in his ears means, shows that he has no intention of returning to being Shi Lei’s dog. He’s not going to meet up with Shi Lei with the intention of returning to his side to save his friends. He’s going to fight to the bitter end, even if that means dying (which he knows it could possibly result in after everything else he’s been through and witnessed.)
Which brings us to this lovely panel.
He put on He Tian’s jacket. Mo has always worn the white jacket, but in the last several panels, he has seen his slow descent into darkness with the gray shirt he’s been wearing, and now he has hit rock bottom. He is embracing death/darkness while at the same time cloaking himself in the armor of the one he loves. He will go to war and accepts that he will not return, but he will take a piece of He Tian with him.
I just want to roll around in this one for a bit. Mo has a broken bottle in his hand, he’s in a fight, he knows he’s surrounded, yet when He Tian pulls him back (with the hand on his chest when there are so many other body parts easier to grab!!!!!) Mo doesn’t swing at him. Even in the middle of a fight he knows he’ll lose, he recognizes He Tian’s touch.
So many feelings in that expression. Surprise, hope, relief, the first breath he’s taken since he got the call from Shi Lei.
Which brings us to the final panel.
Mo, the only one in light, with just a sliver of light at the top of He Tian’s head. Mo will not have to descend into darkness today, but I want to also point out that his outfit is a mirror of the men who stand behind him, down to the V shape of the jacket and the bandages around his throat that mimic a collar. This is fantastic foreshadowing. And He Tian, who stands all in black, with only touches of light on him. There’s still a chance for him to step back, but he’s deep in that darkness.
And then finally, where I began my first post. Shi Lei isn’t anywhere to be seen in the last ten panels of this chapter. Has the snake slithered away, leaving his goons to take his punishment?
EDIT: My personal preference is that Shi Lei ran. It will give He Tian time to cool his head and rethink his murder plans. Also, if Shi Lei ran, it gives He Tian more time to stay before his eventual departure. It makes for good drama.
