Francisco nació en el año 1416, en un pueblo llamado Paula; Italia. En su infancia se enfermó gravemente de los ojos. Sus padres y él encomendaron sus oraciones a Dios por intercesión a San Francisco de Asís, y fue curado.

En acción de gracias Francisco se fue a los 14 años en peregrinación a Asís. Allí recibió el llamado a la vida religiosa y se convirtió en ermitaño. Dedicó la mayor parte de su tiempo a la oración y a la práctica de la penitencia.

Se retiró a la montaña donde vivió austeramente durante cinco años, bajo el rezo y la meditación. Se alimento solo de agua, yerbas silvestres, durmió sobre el suelo y tuvo una piedra como almohada.

Hacia 1450 se formó un grupo de seguidores en torno al ejemplo del eremita Francisco. Este, fundó varios conventos para religiosos. En todos ellos puso una consigna o ley para cumplir: “Cuaresma perpetua”.
