I swear Ghost of Tsushima and now Yotei are some of the only games I take loooooads of pictures in cause they are such gorgeous games!
Haven't gotten far in the game so no spoilers, but here are some pics I took of @noshirdalal s character when I found out he was in it, couldn't resist, Sucker Punch's camera settings are *chefs kiss*
Haven't been able to draw lately too because of work - so virtual photography almost scratches the same itch of doing something creative 🤘
It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve been on Tumblr - sorry for the absence!
These shots are awesome, @blue-leviathan - thank you for sharing these!
I’m grateful to be a small part of Atsu’s journey. Please be careful about spoilers, even in the tags! I hope folks enjoy walking the Road to Vengeance with the one and only #ErikaIshii. I was honored to work with them. We shared lots of hugs, smiles, and tears.

Oof. Lava always does these beautiful pieces that gently rip your heart out. I held our kiddo just like this as we looked out the window to see snow for the first time in Atlanta this past winter. Beautifully done, my friend. 🥰
Noshir Dalal's (Charles Smith's VA and the man who largely shaped Charles into the singular character that he is, found here on tumblr @noshirdalal and on Cameo [in case you have your own questions you'd like answered]) beautiful response to my cameo prompt:
Q: You’ve mentioned before that Charles likes to read. What is his favorite book? Also, you’ve talked some about cowboy poetry and how you think it’s something Charles might have connected to. Can we get a favorite poem of his in his voice?
Besides the fact that this reading of "The Men That Don't Fit In" was just plain fantastic and moving as all get out, I really admire Noshir's choice of poem.
Similar to the poem’s author and his simultaneous celebration and castigation of the prototypical outlaw, Charles always came off to me as someone who loves his fellow gang members deeply but who didn't share their illusions about themselves or how they function within the larger context of the world around them.
Charles makes several remarks throughout the game ('Unpleasant? How do you rob and kill people pleasantly?' 'All this death and for what? Just so we can have enough money to be able to run from what we've done?' 'The amount of hell we raised, we’re owed some back') that indicate a high level of self-awareness about what it is the gang ACTUALLY does and how they're perceived by the outside world.
Arthur makes some gestures at this understanding throughout the game, but his moral musings are undercut by his inability to stand his ground against Dutch throughout the numerous acts of outright cruelty his found-father perpetuates in Chapters 4-6 (Arthur barks, but he never bites).
Arthur and John have their gripes and moans, but ultimately the two of them stick it out until the bloody end. Charles is the first person to really break free of the fate the gang is hurtling towards.
In a tragedy built on the back of it's main cast's inability to cope with a changing world, Charles is arguably the character who exerts the most agency. He makes the decision in Chapter 6--when the circumstances that once tied him to the gang have dramatically altered--to cut loose.
Because of this choice, he lives.
To me, at least, this poem--and Noshir's brilliant delivery--isn't about Charles himself. Or at least not just about himself.
Its him talking about the Van der Linde gang. Arthur and John, his second family. Wild, brilliant, bold, true, free--and gone. With nothing but graves to show for the lives they lived.
Charles isn't reciting a poem--he's reciting a eulogy.
Transcript:
Hey Rocks. Um, thank you for your patience with all of this.
Yeah, so we know that Charles reads and I know that we’ve talked before about a scene that apparently didn’t make it into the game, where after Charles’ interaction with Micah—and you know, yeeting him across the camp—Arthur comes upon him reading a book.
That uh, that scene affected me in a major way and I think it's probably the reason I portray Charles the way I do.
A guy who can physically manhandle pretty much anyone at camp having the mental and emotional maturity and self-regulation—if you can’t tell I’m a new dad [laughs]—to find a way to deal with his anger that doesn’t involve acting out and breaking stuff?
Told me a tremendous amount about Charles, especially because what I’d been introduced to was the idea that Charles was a really violent, really angry maniac.
And I love the idea that he’s really into poetry. I like poetry a lot. Actually when I was working on that latest skin for Yone (spl?) for League of Legends, I learned from the writing team that cowboy poetry is, like, a thing.
And so I decided to look some up. And I like to think that maybe that this is a poem that Charles would have had in that book he was reading.
The poem is called “The Men That Don’t Fit In” by Robert W. Service. Fitting, I think, especially for Charles for a number of reasons. I hope you like it.
[Noshir goes into Charles’ voice and recites below poem by Robert W. Service (British-born Canadian Poet, 1874-1958), published in his book Songs of the Yukon (1907)]
There’s a race of men that don’t fit in,
A race that can’t stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain’s crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don’t know how to rest.
If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they’re always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: “Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!”
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.
And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It’s the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that’s dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.
He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life’s been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He’s a rolling stone, and it’s bred in the bone;
He’s a man who won’t fit in.
Being a lifelong martial artist and a much more recent actor, I have taken a lot of wisdom and guidance from this poem. There is something noble to be found in a dedication to a lifelong pursuit - the diligence, commitment, perseverance, discipline, resolve. It is the cornerstone of mastery. Both of the skill and oneself.
As many of you on Tumblr can attest, there are lots of folks out there who want to create art without ever going through the self-work necessary to actually become an artist - relying on AI to create something vaguely representative of their vision without actually developing any skill or overcoming any failure. The result isn’t art. It’s theft.
In the combat arts we’re seeing this a lot as well. Average people empowered by the fact that they’ve quickly learned how to hurt people who have no skill, without really taking the time or having the guidance to learn when and how that new power should be responsibly used. The result isn’t a warrior. It’s thuggery.
There’s an excitement to living outside the bounds of the law. The desperate scrabble for tomorrow’s meal, or simply to live to see tomorrow at all. Living in a state of danger also heightens the every day because it may always be your last. Life seems brighter - or at least brought into sharper focus. And I think for many in the gang, that heightened experience of resisting death has been conflated with what it actually means to live.
It begs the question of where one sees value: a life all-too-short, but full of excitement and passion… like a firework. And once it’s gone, there is nothing left to mark its passing. Or a quieter, more mundane life. That leaves behind a Legacy.
thresher is out! and as expected we were all wrong and, far from being untrustworthy, Hercules is probably the most honest person on the Thresher team so far, save maybe Val.
which also means at high risk of death in a candela obscura system. i'm nervous for next week, y'all, not gonna lie. this is what i love about short runs and the candela system in particular -- the stakes are always high and any character can croak pretty much any time.
anyway, the more heroic tone post-launch called for a leyendecker-/robert mcginnis-style book cover take; though with the release of the official art I'll have to attempt a few others with longer hair.
“FAR FROM BEING UNTRUSTWORTHY, HERCULES IS PROBABLY THE MOST HONEST PERSON ON THE THRESHER TEAM.”
Yup. Absolutely. No need to apologize, everyone makes mistakes.
Baaaaaahahahahahaha

It’s a couple years late, but I’m finally playing HFW and just did Kotallo’s first mission, the Broken Sky. And I just have to say I love that man already 😂
Not only is he voiced by an incredibly talented and kind VA such as yourself, but his sheer dryness and the line delivery made me laugh harder than I have in a long time, especially when paired with Aloy’s pure sass.
The line that absolutely took me out though was the soft pouting “that was an unkind comparison :/” after Aloy asks if he’s going to disobey Hekkaro like that “arrogant shit” Tekotteh. I laughed SO hard at that one.
So thank you, and keep up the amazing work as the Kotallo brainrot sets in and I already am thinking of snippets to write.
Haha thank you! I'm so happy that people liked Kotallo. It's funny, the 2 characters I was SURE folks would hate were Kotallo and Charles Smith, so the reaction was a wonderful surprise. The writing team at Guerrilla deserves all the praise - they gave me so much to work with. Broken Sky was all performance capture, because I was lucky enough to shoot that scene before the pandemic locked everything down. I think if I hadn't found Kotallo's physicality, I never would have found his voice.
"That was an unkind comparison..." hahaha yeah, I remember the reaction in the room when I walked off muttering that line - that was a good one. 😁

Prefacing this with saying I still haven't gotten to watch Thresher yet but I've been all over the art everyone's making!
Does Hercules wear a full knee-ankle-foot orthotic?
Hi Lava! Oh jeez I’ve missed a ton of these. Hmmm… how can I answer this…
Hercules’s benthic adventures are the stuff of legend. And he has survived where generations of his rivals have not. That being said, the Deep always finds a way to exact its price from those seeking its treasures. His body has paid dearly.
DCS or Decompression Sickness (aka The Bends) has killed many a deep sea diver. Imagine, if you will, nitrogen bubbles erupting out of the blood and joints at a speed beyond that which bone, tendon, or flesh can accommodate. It needs to get out, and it doesn’t much care how it does so.
Hercules used to wear the brace when the pain would flare, but these days, as his condition worsens, it has become a permanent addition to his attire. The bracing at the ankle can be cleverly hidden inside a custom boot, but the knee requires too much reinforcement for vanity to be a consideration. Eventually, he will probably lose the ability to walk at all.
It is only when he is diving - his body weight supported by the Deep - that he ever truly feels free anymore.

Love your work, Lava. And actually, that last poem that Rajan recited as he leaves Elsie and the Circle, is a reference to this… and also how has history with Mme Glask.
Many years ago, Mme Glask was approached by a very wealthy, haunted young man named Rajan, who came seeking her help. Unlike most of her guests, he is not here to sate carnal appetites… his request is rather unique.
Keeping a healthy distance, he drops to a knee and explains that there is a woman he cares deeply for, but that whenever she moves to touch him, he suffers a panic attack of sorts. He begs Mme Glask for her help as he wants nothing more than to be able to share her affections.
It‘s certainly not the first time Glask has encountered a nervous, bumbling young man, but something about this is very different. His fear goes beyond nerves there is a desperate fear there, that he is constantly trying to check… and his despair is profound. She decides to train this one herself. It would seem that she has adopted yet another stray.
His anxieties turn out to be stronger than she first realized, but she is up to the challenge. She gives Rajan a poem, explaining that it used to bring her comfort in dark times. He is to sit in the room, alone, and recite the poem until it becomes almost a mantra… and when he feels he is ready, she would enter the room and see how close she can get to him before he becomes too unsettled. The first day, she turns the door knob and suddenly he screams for her to stay out. She releases the knob and listens. The boy is gasping for breath, the poem now being recited at a furious, desperate pace as her ears are filled with a low grinding hum.
And then she is aware that something is on the other side of the door. She steps back, like the waves retreating off the beach, acutely aware that something massive is on the other side of the door… seeking her out.
A short while later a disheveled and crestfallen Rajan leaves the room. Mme Glask asks no questions, but watches him go. He leaves a handful of perfect diamonds with the hostess, apologizes for the room, and walks off into the night.
The room is gone.
Not wrecked. Glask has watched drunken men and their tantrums. This is different. The bedding is gone. The lampshades and window dressings are gone. The walls, most of the flooring, and some framing for the room are gone. The glass of the window, framing nails, metal from the light fixtures… those are covered in tiny pits, but intact. In the center of the room, by the bed, lays an island of flooring and part of a pillow that remain untouched. She approaches carefully, and places her hand on the floor… it’s warm to the touch. She can almost see the boy, laying there curled in a ball, clutching the pillow as whatever happened in this room tore the world apart around him. The Eye of the Storm.
The boy returns the very next day. And Mme Glask welcomes him as if yesterday never even happened. This time she suggests the now vacated East Wing. She’d been meaning to remodel that wing anyway.
Over the next year, there is steady progress couple with several moments of terror where Glask dove out of the room and waited. And by the end of the year, she holds the young man in her arms and he recites the poem with shuddering breaths - his arms holding her almost painfully tight. She gets the feeling she is the first woman he has held in a long long time.
The next step is the final test. Can he handle a kiss? You’ve never seen a boy so excited and yet so dreading a Final Exam.
As Rajan is in the room preparing, there’s commotion in the Glass Cat. A large fight has erupted in the main hall. Glask rushes to guide her bouncers when a small gang of drunkards scrambles up the stairs looking for entertainment, bulldozing over her with cheers and hoots. She yells at them to stop, and as they kick open a door, she yells, “Rajan!” as loud as she can.
She hears Rajan scream for them to get out, but the door slams shut. For a moment, it’s quiet. And then the panicked cries of the drunk patrons are overwhelmed by a roaring drone. The sound of a thousand waves crashing upon a thousand rocks, as the Glass Cat begins the shake.
Glass breaks and there’s commotion outside - the ravaged remnants of a corpse has landed in the street as the entire East Wing collapses upon itself.
And that was the last she ever saw of the young man, until the Circle.
But every month a hefty sum is delivered by driver from the Savarimuthu Estate - the bills always wrapped in a white gold chain adorned by yet another priceless jewel from Oldfaire… it’s iridescent colors always evoking the colors of the sea.

Noshir Dalal’s response to my prompt “Please record Charles roasting Dutch post-refinery/Eagle Flies’ death”
Please please go throw money at @noshirdalal over at his newly established cameo. He’s such a talented and dedicated artist who really brought Charles to life and I love everything about this insane five minute monologue he made in response to my joke prompt. The pathos. The catharsis.
This is the only thing I’m going to be able to think about the rest of the week. I have so many questions. Starting with, of course: What did Charles do to his father, and what were the circumstances where Charles told Dutch about it, when that’s not something even Arthur seems to know?
Hey @rockscanfly - your response on Cameo made me laugh. I’m so glad you liked it! Also… thanks for posing such an interesting question. I know it was originally meant to be a roast, but when I thought about it… I dunno… if this moment ever happened, I think it would be one of those moments where Dutch is reminded how scary Charles can be.
And I think Charles wouldn’t just take out Dutch, because part of Arthur making the most of the time he has left is trying to resolve things with the people in his life. And Charles won’t take that opportunity from him.
Hi, hey, hello, I suspect my ask about Bode's lightsaber hilt is sitting among the mountain of asks you've probably received, but I have returned to add another to the pile! This time about Bode and knives. What sort of knives would he use/carry (since I imagine missions he can take any sort of lightsaber on are sparse, but Jetpack needs to be prepared for stabbing anyway). Like with the lightsaber hilt ask, this too may cause me to descend into a flurry of cardboard and glue as I cobble together more cosplay props fyi
Hi QoA! Hmmm… this answer was easier to do visually so I made a video but every time I upload it it doesn’t take. It’s 4+min long so maybe it’s too long? Let me try again and if it doesn’t work I’ll write it out. But I don’t want you thinking I am ignoring you twice! I missed your original lightsaber question so I wanna make sure I get this one. 😊
