Everyone has trauma.
And I don't intend that to come off as "We're all suffering so shut up." What I feel is important to grasp about that is: you are not alone and there is hope in that.
Sometimes we can make our suffering our identity, because we have been made to be known as "the one meant to suffer like this." These wounds can also serve to keep you in line with authority or isolate you from others. It also can serve as a way for you yourself to perpetuate that pain onto others because that is how many oppressive systems function and stay alive. The idea that you alone suffer and only in this way and that is how it is, serves many of these systems. Because then you never grow or change and so nothing else does.
Everyone has trauma, so we can find others who are dealing with these wounds too. We can connect to each other, learn from each other, and help tend to one another. We can also work together to find the common source that brings our suffering, and that is the most terrifying thing to these systems. Defy being unique in your suffering, find the others, find the source, find healing.

The movie has a real love for NYC and immigrant culture as a part of that. The opening scene where K welcomes the undocumented immigrants to the United States. One alien greets another and says he's ordered him pierogi. A lot of them are refugees from their home worlds who just want to survive.
