I fostered cats for years. Many came through of both genders. No correlation between gender and personality. One we kept is a girl and she sits with my dad for like, three hours at a time and another is a guy cat who really prefers personal space and doesn’t like being pet below the midsection.

Honestly I think the only gender correlation in cats I've ever seen is that orange girl cats (extremely rare) may have any number of brain cells, but all orange boy cats have one, and they share it.

People prove to associate male as the "neutral" or "default" gender even when otherwise corrected. I notice in posts and videos of animals, the comments will typically be like "Does he even know he exists" or "he's just a guy" or "he's so freaky." There's almost always an overwhelming assuming that the animal is male. Yes, even when it's public knowledge she is a girl and when the author specifies it. Some exceptions are when the animal purportedly possesses a "feminine" trait: mothering, being irritable, or serving face. So yeah, it is that deep even language. This shouldn't be reduced to "how dare you assume my cat's gender" because it does reflect some projection of human perception of gender that is absent in animals. The popular conscious of feminine genders is being only overtly "feminine." This probably bleeds into the association where girl cats are naturally colder or sassier and boy cats being silly and less clever.
