my friends were like āwe donāt like your music and we didnāt vote for youā to Harry LOL. Louis told us to fuck off hahaha
#Louisā super power is throwing himself in front of Harry during innocuous only mildly offensive commentsĀ #Harryās own mother could probably make a joke about Harry cutting his hair only to have Louis shoot in from another room to defend him

why does whoknows gets it right everytime
the office/one direction
you know what line from Shakespeare makes me go feral. that one line thatās likeĀ āI will live in thy heart, die in thy lap, and be buried in thy eyes (and also I will go with thee to thy Uncle)ā from Much Ado About Nothing because like. that line is objectively really funny because Beatrice is just talking about going with Beatrice to have a conversation with her uncle and heās. being an overdramatic bitch again. but the other thing is that. that line is so unbearably tender. imagine you ask someone to go with you to your uncleās and they seriously tell you not only do they want to do that but they also want to die in your lap and be buried in your eyes, sort of in a joking tone but also completely meaning it. i cant think about that too long or ill absolutely go insane
āHey man I need to buy more paper towel wanna come withā *deadpan expression* I would die for you
Ok so āwhere do broken hearts goā (WDBHG) came on my phone this morning and while listening to it I was hit very hard from it compared with other 2 of the new Louisā songs:
Donāt let it break your heart (DLIBYH) AND Habit (H)
Basically the whole concept of: things got messed up but there was the want to fix and after some time all was good again.
The titles āwhere do broken hearts goā and ādonāt let it break your heartā are already similar.
It is kind of agreed that Louis could have messed up things:
DLIBYH - ālife gets hard and it gets messed upā
H - āI always said I would mess up eventually I told you thatā
WDBHG - āCounted all my mistakes and there's only one standing out from the list of the things I've doneā
So things were messed up and this happened:
H - ābut you and I knew the truth of it in advance, mentally you were already out the doorā
DLIBYH - āwhen you love someone and they let you goā
WDBHG - āto the look on your face when I let you goā + āhow to fix up a heart that I let downā
There was the big question because both couldnāt let go:
H - āNever thought that giving up would be so hard the thought of you and your addictive heartā
WDBHG - ātell me now, tell me will you ever love me again?ā
With the want of be good together again:
DLIBYH - āOh whatever tears you apart donāt let it break your heartā
WDBHG - āhow to fix up a heart that I let down?ā + āso I built you a house from a broken home and I wrote you a song with the words you spokeā
It took some time (literally same words):
DLIBYH - ātime takes time to heal itā
H - ātook some time cause I ran out of energy of playing someone I heard Iām supposed to beā
WDBHG - ātook some tome but I figure out how to fix upā
The message in the end is very clear that all was finally good again:
H - āhonestly I donāt have to chose anymore, itās been ages, different stages, come so far from Princess Park, Iāll always need you in front of meā
DLIBYH - āwhatever tears you apart don't let it break your heartā
Also adding the whole chorus of Habit because yes
You're the habit that I can't break, youāre the feeling I can't put down,you're the shiver that I can't shake, you're the habit that I can't break
How much time is perfect for two characters to develop feelings for each other?
Guide: Characters Falling in LoveHow Soon Do People Develop Feelings for Each Other?
This is a great question and Iām SO glad you asked!First, itās important to know thatĀ ādeveloping feelingsā for someone can mean different things to different people, but the typical definition is synonymous with falling in love. This could mean just beginning to fall in love or having completely fallen in love.
One of the things that drives readers crazy in fiction is something commonly calledĀ āinsta-love.ā The exact meaning ofĀ āinsta-loveā can also vary from person to person, but in a nutshell it means two characters developed feelings for each other way too quickly. If you want to avoid insta-love between your characters, it helps to understand the general stages of love.Ā 1) Lust/Attraction - the first thing that happens in a relationship is two people notice each other. Upon initial observation and interaction an attraction begins to develop. So this stage is a mix of chemistry, physical attraction, and emotional interest.Ā 2) Preoccupation - they know theyāre interested in each other, and now they canāt stop thinking about each other. They want to be together all the time and make constant excuses to interact or spend time together. This is where bonding begins.3) Idolization - by this stage theyāve been on a few dates or have spent a decent amount of time together. This is where theĀ āfalling in loveā starts to happen, the point where other people are likeĀ āstop, you guys are so annoying!ā Theyāre getting to know one another and they love everything they see.4) Intimacy - the couple has spent a lot of time together. They know a lot about each other. In a more restrictive culture, theyāve probably at least touched by this point and have maybe hugged and kissed. In a more contemporary culture, theyāve kissed, held hands, made out, and have probably even had sex a few times. Now theyāre becoming more comfortable with one another. They may be cohabitating, more or less, so theyāre getting used to seeing and knowing things that are more private. Theyāve shared a lot of personal information, like childhood memories, fears and goals, and beliefs and opinions. This is where trust is being built.5) Exhilaration - this is the point at which a couple can truly be described asĀ āin love.ā Theyāre on cloud nine as this relationship sails itself through cotton candy seas. By now, theyāre official. Whether they talk about putting a label on it or itās just there. They openly or silently agree that they are in a committed relationship. It wonāt be long now before they say theĀ āLā word, if they havenāt already. So, when you see all the things that have to happen for a couple to fall in love, or get to the point of saying they love each other, you can understand how ridiculous it is in fiction where two characters meet and three days later areĀ āin loveā and sayingĀ āI love you.ā But, aĀ ārealisticā timeline isnāt so easy to pin down, partly because all of the things above are more about actual time spent together, and the quality of that time, then they are about number of days, weeks, or months. Two characters who are stuck in a harrowing situation together for seven hours could conceivably get through the first two stages in that eight hours, because a lot of interaction, talking, and bonding is going to happen during that time, and the emotional depth may be accelerated by the stress of the situation. If you have a high-stress situation where the two characters are forced to be together, rely on and trust one another, and face a lot of danger together, they could potentially get through the first four steps in only a matter of days. That movie The Mountain Between Us with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba comes to mind.Ā
On the other hand, you can have two characters who work together, but who donāt get a lot of private interaction, who could potentially take years just to get to stage two. (Weāre looking at you, Jim and Pam!)
Either way, what matters is that your characters go through all of the stages and at least most of the things that happen in those stages. We should see your characters meet, or if theyāve already met, we should see clearly where their relationship currently stands. We should see them begin to notice each other, and begin to notice that theyāve noticed each other. We should see their mounting interest, their need to know more, the blushing looks, the excuses to touch, all the interactions that allow them to start to bond. If you can get them that far, whether it took months of office interactions or a week of the Hunger Games, you can safely say your characters have developed feelings for each other. All you have to do is convince your reader (through all of the above) that those feelings believably exist.

Iāve done some Twitter threads on this topic, so thought it might be nice to do a Tumblr post too. One of my pet peeves is when people act like adult fantasy (or sci-fi for that matter) is just a straight white dude thing and that diversity only exists in young adult fantasy. Thatās such a disservice to all the authors of marginalized identities currently writing adult fantasy!
Authors and books below the cut, including links to Goodreads. Iām not providing trigger warnings (if I make the post too long Tumblr starts freaking out about it), but you can use the search function on Goodreads reviews to find more specifics.Ā

No more one sided relationships, you deserve the same amount of effort that youāre putting in.
The hero shows up at the villainās doorstep one night. Theyāre shivering, bleeding, scared. Thereās also a slightly dazed look in their eyesā they were drugged. They look like they were assaulted. Looking up at the villain, swaying slightly as theyāre close to passing out, they mumble āā¦didnāt know where else to goā¦ā then collapse into the villainās arms.
some easy ways to not white wash Zayn in your fic
Iāve been feeling a little frustrated by the depiction of Zayn, especially in H&L fics, for years now. But I always thought people would simply not listen and try to get better. Iāve found some wonderful friends of color in this fandom, had the space to talk and understand each other, and I think itās time I put some effort into making this fandom into a space where I feel comfortable. So here we go!
Disclaimer:
This is about creating fictional characters. NOT an analysis of real life.
I am a persian/german, bisexual nb person who grew up in a suburbian-ish neighbourhood. This means I can only talk about being mixed/brown and growing up in a white environment in either a very narrow or a very broad sense. Iād love for other brown/mixed and pakistani/desi people, especially those who live(d) in England, to add their thoughts. Your opinions are important and appreciated!
Note: I wonāt be talking about faith because I donāt have enough experience in that.
This post is obviously not complete or extensive. And thereās always the risk of turning him into a Token Brown Character. But we all have learning curves, are hopefully willing to listen to each other and help, and thatās great! My inbox is open, and while I donāt always have energy for it, I generally love talking about this stuff - so please do ask away or voice ways for me to improve. I definitely still make mistakes.
Lastly: I mostly read H&L which means I have a very specific perception of Zaynās portrayal in fics. But this can help with any pairing.
Culture
The most obvious and easiest one, thatās often overlooked.
Arts Zayn! is! nerdy! Fic is a great space to explore his goofiness and his passion for comics, graffiti, sci-fi etc etc. Maybe heās reading a book by a pakistani author? (we love book mentions in fics!! maybe we can generally add some authors of color and not center on european/white romanticism and modernity) We have some awesome fantasy AUs!! What about desi/islamic/pakistani mythology? (and not just djinn) Maybe he has posters of brown bands or artists on his walls? Maybe he puts on some music in urdu or by singers of color?
Food What if, instead of ordering take-away nr2, ot5 cook some aloo? What if Zayn brings some jalebi to a night in? Maybe look up some pakistani recipes! You might get to learn a new dinner favourite!
Language Iām going to refrain from delving into details like body language or gestures or speech patterns. But some basics: Does he talk in Urdu with his family? What does he call his parents? (e.g.: Aba,Baba,Dad,Abu,etc) Does he talk Urdu in front of white people?
Tip: Try not to describe Urdu, Arabic or any other desi and middle eastern language/script as mysterious or dark. Itās an orientalist narrative that indirectly places English (and other western languages) as the rational and safe norm.
Family
Weāve seen how important family is to Zayn. He seems very gentle and devoted to to them, attends big family gatherings, e.g. on Eid celebrations. I donāt expect you to understand the complex dynamics of brown families. But itās interesting how Louis, for example, is always depicted as someone who is very close to his family, while Zayn often seems like heās living in a vacuum. Why is that? How did he grow up? Did he have the same toys as white kids? Did he watch the same cartoons? Was he comfortable with bringing friends around his house? How has that shaped him?
Tan France on growing up as a gay brown man.
A lot of brown people know their extended family. We grow up with cousins as our best friends. I call my fatherās best friend uncle and his children cousins. Oh, and aunties!! (may I recommend the podcast BadBrownAunties) Hundreds of pinches and kisses to rosy cheeks!
I also recommend watching Hasan Minhaj on Patriot Act and Netflix for some politics and great immigrant jokes. Bonus: Hasan and Tan going shopping.
Looks
I know. Zayn is breathtaking. But when is it truly important to the narrative or character perception to write odes to his beauty? Is he described as an object - as something to consume? (I get the urge to lick him but cāmon caramel skin is a little overused by now)
Controversal opinion: Zayn may get a tan when heās outside a lot, but heās quite pale. That doesnāt make him less of a Brown Person. This applies to fanartists, too!! Oftentimes Harry looks much more orange tanned than Zayn!
(I could also talk about the privilege of white passing, but I donāt think this is the space. To break it down: WhileĀ the Zayn in your fic may be stopped at every airport for a ārandom searchā and has had teachers mocking him for his last name in class, he probably doesnāt experience as much hate comments in conversation or on the street as people with darker skin tones.) Hair! (I fucking love body hair) Happy trails! Hair on forearms! Thick hair on the inside of thighs! Hair between boobs! Ass hair! Hairy nipples!
Ā Zayn as a Brown Person who is also Not Straight and/or Cis
Understand that every brown lgbt person has different experiences and be careful about what your narratives are enforcing. If and when brown people get queer representation in media itās often focused on their suffering, self-hatred, their families being unwelcoming. Letās avoid that. Questions to think about: - Is he made comfortable talking about being a moc by his white partner or white lgbt friends? - has he found brown / poc lgbt spaces? are all his friends white or cishet? - Is he out to his close family? To his extended family? Or is he happy with engaging with the lgbt community only in certain spaces? - does he introduce partners to his family or is it not that important to him? - has he learned some lgbt history of pakistan or the uk or wherever he lives? - Did he have lgbt idols as a teen? Were those white? Did that make it hard to imagine himself as both brown and non cishet? Or did it feel like he had to choose? - How is his understanding of gender or sexuality shaped by growing up as a Brown Person in a white environment? (e.g. does he feel connected to the constructs of white manhood/masculinity? What are his love languages? Are they percieved as such?) (This is a Huge Topic and a little too complex for fic, but. Idk. I thought Iād mention it, especially for other brown people who read this.) - signalling: Dyed hair? Bracelets? Gay Shirts? Big ass rainbow flag? Nothing at all? Finally: Please, please write him occupying his time with other things than smoking, drinking and generally being sexy. I understand that, if heās a side character, you want to focus on your main pairing and give him a function. But there are so many possibilities to do that! This is a great way to practice writing secondary characters! This is it for now! Again, other PoC: Feel free to comment! I will add things as time goes on. White people: Donāt hesitate to ask for clarification or help, just donāt expect me to have energy All The Time. Youāre welcome! Love ā£ļøššš
