Lots of writing advice on tumblr. It's been years since I've written fiction in a serious way, but I did write a couple of (bad) novels in my early 20's, a bunch of short stories, and also a few hundred thousand words of LARP writing, and I do have a bacherlor's of science in creative writing (lol).
From what I can tell, there are only three universally applicable pieces of writing advice:
Read a lot (mandatory)
Show your writing to people (mandatory)
Have something wrong with you in a way that is impossible to articulate except by writing a novel (optional)
May 8th - foul bauble day
My dash is full of struggling writers rn.
My dear friend Johnathan Harker has begun his lovely food blog as he travels through the countryside of Transylvania. Hope his journey is smooth and his business concludes swiftly!
Me: *makes halloumi* okay today I will brine it and store it and try it in a few days!
Me: *eats it raw within 3 hours*
I still remember the first time I made bread. You're supposed to let it rest for a bit, but something about the process just turned me into a ravenous animal. I remember running outside with it like a cat that's stolen from the kitchen and devouring the whole loaf like saturn eating his son. Exactly like the painting.

@creekfiend was very kind in sharing some writing resources with me, and I thought I'd pass along the kindness by listing them down below.
N.K. Jemisin's article 'Describing characters of color in writing'
Mary Anne Mohanraj's article on approaching characters of colour
Renee Harleston's article How to 'Write Characters of Color Without Using Stereotypes'
Working with Colour, a resource site for writers
the book Writing the Other by by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward, which had a description that cut deep, because I've definitely fallen into this trap out of fear:
and then a video recommended by @sheprd (thank you!) about pitfalls in descriptive language
if anyone else has more resources to add, feel free to reblog with them! this is something I want to learn more about.
I was talking yesterday about how I should probably change the skin colour of a character in a not-yet-written book, because that character is a large, aggressive dragon-shifter and I was worried about her being read with unintentional and offensive subtext.
I haven't gotten my hands on Writing the Other yet (it's still in the mail!) but from reading my way through these articles and watching the Princess Weekes video, I now understand that 'white-ifying' a character you're worried about is a lazy and cowardly solution. so, if I do ever finish the book Eres loses Everything, I'll keep her as is, do my best to be thoughtful, and hire a sensitivity reader to pick out any blind spots.
thank you to everyone who passed on resources, I really appreciate it!
here are a few more resources I've found, if anyone’s interested:

love love love when a particularly manipulative character is lying off their ass about something and then throws in one hauntingly genuine line
“This is your daily, friendly reminder to use commas instead of periods during the dialogue of your story,” she said with a smile.
“Unless you are following the dialogue with an action and not a dialogue tag.” He took a deep breath and sat back down after making the clarifying statement.
“However,” she added, shifting in her seat, “it’s appropriate to use a comma if there’s action in the middle of a sentence.”
“True.” She glanced at the others. “You can also end with a period if you include an action between two separate statements.”
Things I didn’t know
“And–” she waved a pen as though to underline her statement–“if you’re interrupting a sentence with an action, you need to type two hyphens to make an en-dash.”
You guys have no idea how many students in my advanced fiction workshop didn’t know any of this when writing their stories.
Okay, but someone please explain question marks when followed by a dialogue tag. How do?
“The speech tag is still part of the previous sentence,” she explained, ‘so it isn’t capitalised.“
“What do you mean?” he asked. “But there’s a full stop as part of the question mark!”
She nodded gravely. “I know!” she said. “A lot of people find this confusing. But the speech tag belongs to the line of dialogue, it’s still part of the sentence, so it’s wrong to capitalise it.”
She reblogged the post again, because she had recently read far too many potentially enjoyable stories marred by poor dialogue punctuation.
I’ve only seen this post in screenshots till now..
NOICE. Can’t wait to use this
“There are two more ways"—she pointed to the blackboard—“to punctuate interruptions. One is with the em dashes outside the quotations marks to indicate continuous speech. The action occurs at the same time as speech. The other—” she sipped from a glass of water “—is em dashes within the quotation marks to indicate interrupted speech.”

literally how i feel after one 20 degree april day
me, when the sun is shining and I'm going on a little walk just because
actively finding out that there are people out there who have read 17776 but skimmed all the football parts. what do you mean. what do you mean. the whole thing is football. what do you mean. it’s not even like a play by play of modern american football it’s literally goofy. you skimmed the bit where people fling themselves into tornadoes? you skimmed the bit where they accidentally created a geologically impassable field? you skimmed GAME 27??? ENGAGE WITH WONDER AND CURIOSITY TOWARDS THINGS YOU MIGHT OTHERWISE ASSUME YOU ARE UNINTERESTED IN. YOU ARE ACTIVELY DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF THE NARRATIVE YOU’VE CHOSEN TO READ. YOU ARE ACTIVELY DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF THE EXPERIENCE OF DISCOVERY. READ THE FOOTBALL PARTS
I don't know what's going on, but I would genuinely die for Nine
I love you little buddy
