In today's world, as women, we have to resist an overwhelming number of temptations every single day. In the beginning, all it took was a single tree and its fruit, but today Satan has devised countless new ways to draw women away from their families, their husbands, and their children.
It begins with the modern belief that every woman needs a college degree. My great-grandparents would not even have understood that idea. What does a woman need a degree for? Is it required to cook? To raise children? To keep a home? Does a diploma help you serve your husband? Does it make daily prayer possible? Is it necessary for pregnancy or motherhood? None of these call for a degree. What higher education does require, however, is time—and once that time is gone, nothing can give it back.
Then there is work outside the home. It is a tragic world in which women are compelled to work away from their homes, separated from the one place where they are truly irreplaceable. I believe that if we desired a little less, were content with a more modest standard of living, and humbly accepted what our husbands provide, in most cases this would not even be necessary. But if the desires that are stirred up in young girls are not curbed early, if they are not taught their proper place, if they are allowed to win every struggle within the family instead of learning to respect the authority of the head of the household, then their hearts will begin to long for what lies outside the home. Even as teenagers they will become restless and difficult, always wanting something bigger, better, or more beautiful instead of gratefully receiving what the head of the family provides.
A mother's example plays a tremendous role in this. Does she receive what she has with humility and gratitude, or is she constantly demanding more, acting defiantly and disrespectfully toward her husband? And, of course, the head of the household must truly lead his family with Christ-like, firm love, giving each member both appropriate rewards and appropriate discipline when necessary. Only the proper balance of love and discipline can preserve peace within the family.
The men in our family do not encourage the women to become involved in politics, because they believe it is not a woman's calling. We are emotional by nature, and they believe that emotional decision-making is harmful in politics. Before marriage, shared values and faith are considered the two most important matters, but these are discussed not with the young woman herself, but with her father. That is why it is essential for a daughter to receive firm values and a strong faith within her family. Then she will know her place, understand her responsibilities, and know that when she does wrong there will be correction, together with the opportunity to learn from it.
So do not spare the rod from your daughter or your wife, for in doing so you show them where their place of safety is—the place where they are protected and cared for. If you send them out into the world, you may lose them, and they will encounter many satanic influences. Undoing those influences in a girl or a woman is extremely difficult and often comes only through many tears.
Stricter love at home brings greater peace and fewer tears. A wife's place is in the home, and that is where her calling lies.
