Someone reblogged one of my posts about caretaking, saying: who said comfort was boring? And when I saw it I was like: what! I’m new to the whump community here on tumblr so I haven’t yet come across all the opinions out there, and I was so surprised. Is comfort really boring to some people?

This made me think about how much what we prefer in whump depends on the extent to which we identify with the characters (and which characters). I always identify very strongly with both whumpee and caretaker, and imagining the process of comfort for me is a form of self care. I’m interested to hear other opinions on this.

personally i dont think the comfort stuff is boring, per se. like anything else, when it's written badly, it becomes boring. but so does the "pain and hurt and misery" section. it's just that those sections are flashier and sexier and more dramatically loaded, so people can generally get away with weak writing without losing readers' interest.

but tbh i really wish the whump community on tumblr would get back to its roots and write and discuss more hurt/comfort prompts, rather than just hurt hurt hurt.
