The Nijiku clan is one of the most prestigious and well known clans. Known for their skills, their strict life style, being a member in the Nijiku clan is such a high honor everyone wishes they had. That being said, marrying into the Nijiku clan is even bigger of an honor for you my dear, as your father put it while talking to you through the screen of your door after you threw a tantrum when he broke the news of you being arranged to merry the Nijiku's elder son.

"but darling don't you understand?! This is the greatest opportunity! We could have a better life! You could have a better life!"

"what better life would this be?! I don't even know him father! For all I know he could be a heartless monster!"

"come on dear... You don't know that..."

"oh but I know they basically disowned their younger son!"

"don't you fall for your mother's gossip!"

"father I literally saw him walking a foot behind Samurai Enjin at the market today"

Your arms were crossed, talking as a matter of factly.

It was no secret Zanka Nijiku, the youngest son of the Nijiku clan has followed behind the steps of the one and only, samurai Enjin. The mere mention of his name would piss me off, and get the women swooning. With his tattooed body, his blonde hair, and a killer of a smile. He was bad news, and everyone knows that. Word also had it the eldest daughter of the Nijiku clan hated him with all her might after he- in her words, influenced her younger brother into leaving the honorable ways of their clan, and joined him in his journey of swinging weapons, getting drunk, seducing women and getting into fights, I'll be it he didn't start but whatever. Their minds were set on the fact that Enjin was the bad guy.

And your father knew all that very well. He wiped his head towards your mother whose been standing by the door and listening in, jumping in her place as she saw your dad's glaring at her.

"have I not tell you to stop filling your daughter's mind with nonsense?!"

"it's not her fault! I can think on my own!"

"I know darling just... Consider please?"

And just like that, with your father's kind voice and tired eyes, you found yourself saying "yes" after all it's not like your dad would want to harm your future. He wants the best for you.

So just like that, you were now sitting across from the elders, right next to your now husband, assessing you as if to see if you were worthy of the almighty son of their clan. Which honestly you almost rolled your eyes at.

On the other end, sitting down was Zanka, which to be honest you were surprised he was there. According to gossip for your mother he was basically shunned by the family. Guess not, or not as much because you could still see him getting looks from other members in the family. He was looking at you as if couldn't believe you were actually marrying his brother.

Sitting by your side, your now husband, Goka. To be honest you felt a bit intimidated, because who wouldn't? The man was as tall as a tree, with a serious and stoic face. You were sure someone's parents used his description to scare their kids into obedience.

But you didn't let it show.

"I heard you were a friend of my little brother's."

Goka's voice suddenly pulled you from your thoughts. His tone was a matter of factly, his face as expressionless as you first saw him.

"I am. Surprised you even know of me."

You replied, your tone as flat as his.

"why wouldn't I? That's how we found you."

You blink at him.

"my brother's life choices might be questionable. Especially how he chooses company."

You frown.

"we look into every person's background, we don't want a bad name to be connected to ours. And yours... Seemed quite decent."

"well that surprisingly sounded like a compliment."

"it is."

You sigh quietly. This marriage is going to be lovely.

Domestic life in the Nijiku clan is surprisingly comfortable if you say so yourself. They did not force their beliefs or values on to you. You were free to do as you wish as long as it doesn't harm the family name in any way.

That being said. You were comfortable, you weren't really happy. Your husband wasn't bad, but he lacked any kind of emotional intelligence to be honest. Even when you tried to get closer, he'd shut himself off, like he didn't know what to do with the affection.

He was a good husband. You liked him. You didn't love him though. Not yet at least. You hoped it'll come by soon enough.

What was lovely though, was Zanka now becoming your brother in law. He made up for the extremely emotionless, cold state of the house. Even though he was trying so hard to act as tough, cold and nonchalant as everybody else. But you know him better.

Coming with Zanka, were his friends, even though he wouldn't call them his friends, but again, you know him well.

A boy with a scary smile bless his heart, and a girl with a lovely one.

Whenever you'd find yourself hanging out with them, she'd find a way to play with your hair, styling it in a crazy and fun ways.

And mostly now, you were finally able to see what their teacher, samurai Enjin was like truely.

His smile is contagious, his eyes were kind to the people he cared about, his carefree and fun attitude was admirable.

He was lovely to be around. Too lovely.

And your husband noticed it, too.

He'd see how you'd steal glances at Enjin. How he'd make you laugh. How just looking at him gives you a small smile despite yourself.

It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair at all. Wasn't it good enough that Enjin took the respect of his younger brother, now taking the attention of his wife? HIS wife?!

Much to Goka's dismay, Enjin noticed his irritation. Now he was having fun with it himself, to where he started actively flirting with you whenever Goka was near enough to hear.

Goka looked at you from afar. You were talking and laughing with his younger brother, fists grabbing tight.

"you know, I kinda wanna give you some advice on how to treat your woman. But I can't tell if you're doing too much, or nothing at all."

Goka had to physically restrain himself as he heard the voice of the man he despised the most, casually leaning against a tree, arms crossed and looking at him, almost mockingly.

"I am doing just fine."

"you know I could help you."

"I do not need your help."

"your wife seems to think otherwise."

Enjin was taunting him, teasing his patience. Goka hated that he was right.

"and what do you suggest?"

Jabber: ABSOLUTELY. He's bending over the second you say something. He's the opposite of Tamsy, he's letting you call all the shots here. His only request is that you go all out with hurting him while you fuck him

I see this sentiment every other week, mostly it’s spillover onto my platforms from Tiktok as far as I can determine, and it’s a complete misconception of Enjin’s name and backstory from chapter 165.

There are two issues with this misconception. One of them isn’t actually the people’s fault, but the other certainly is.

From Alto's speech bubble, the original Japanese:

"聞いた事がある

まともに稼げる年齢になったら見返りを求めるため

保護した子供に印を付ける"孤児院"があると"

The translation of this speech bubble is too free and uses words that give off the wrong impression.

In the original Japanese, it says that there are orphanages who mark the children under their care so they can demand compensation from them once they’re old enough to work. That's the verb 稼げる kasegeru = to earn an income.

The orphanage doesn’t wait until the children are old enough to “fetch a good price”. They wait for the children to start working normally so they can demand part of their wage. And while this sounds reasonably bad, it’s not slavery. Neither inside the orphanage nor after it. This leads me to my second point that goes into reading comprehension problems despite the bad translation

The context makes it clear that the orphanage wasn’t doing slavery before that rich man came along

However bad the “fetch a price” translation turned you off, everything before and after that speech bubble made it clear that Enjin’s slavery only happened after he met that man. Before that, there was no slavery, as it is defined by this chapter. In short, Enjin’s full name was never a slave name.

It was exactly what he said it is: people who did not care about him, probably with his parents the only exception, who called him by a new name because they didn’t want to remember his actual one(s). Who was the one who remembered all those names? Enjin. Enjin cared about the names his parents and caretakers gave him, which is why his name grew longer. Caretaker number 5 who called him Pharjin couldn’t care less about all the names that came before.

Enjin cared about his names but everything about the orphanage, including the physical and emotional neglect of it, crushed him. Then he made everyone’s lives even more miserable and fled before he was sold like the other children. That was when he gave up on his personhood, talked to Alto about selling him, and disregarded all his names for the first time in his life, demanding a completely new one for a new life as a slave.

The important part about this tragic backstory, is that Alto did not give Enjin a new name, slave or otherwise. He abbreviated Enjin’s full name to what it is now. Meaning, all of Enjin’s history, pre-orphanage, mid-orphanage, post slavery market, and whatever it means to him, isn’t thrown away.

It’s still there for him to unpack when he wants to.
