Weekly Bookish Question #494 (May 31st - June 6th, 2026)
If you could have a special edition of one of your favorite books made, what would definitely have to be part of its design?
Thereβs an edition of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell that features a lot of fan art, and Iβd love to see that for more of my favorite books. Itβs cool to see art I first saw on tumblr published in the book.
Iβd also love a special edition with annotations and background material from the author (inspirations/changes from the first draft, etc), kind of like dvd commentary.
what a great and fitting idea to put fanart in Fangirl!
and oooooh yes, I'm sure an annotated version with lots of background information would be really popular, what a great idea!
Weekly Bookish Question #494 (May 31st - June 6th, 2026)
If you could have a special edition of one of your favorite books made, what would definitely have to be part of its design?
Leather-bound - it doesn't have to be real leather, I just want the look. Book title and a minimalist image stamped into the cover, rather than printed.
Exquisite designs on the chapter pages.
My favorite book is a modern-era trilogy but I so would love the aesthetic of something pulled off a dusty bookshelf, a hidden treasure.
oooh, yes, leather-bound books are timelessly beautiful!
Weekly Bookish Question #494 (May 31st - June 6th, 2026)
If you could have a special edition of one of your favorite books made, what would definitely have to be part of its design?
more interior illustrations. it doesn't matter what book. I just want so much art, all the time, maybe in color and glossy and shit. by one artist, by many different artists, idc. give me art.
yessss!!! I've never thought "this book has too much art in it"
Weekly Bookish Question #492 (May 17th - May 23rd, 2026)
Do you think youβd have any withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly had to stop reading books? What might they be?
I canβt stand being bored and have low spoons for learning new hobbies so unfortunately I think Iβd revert to spending a lot more time on social media, which would be extremely bad for my mental health. I would definitely have some emotional difficulty directly from the lack of reading, too. Always having a few books Iβm working on, a few stories Iβm living in, seems to buffer me against irl problems and stress, so without that Iβd have a lot more mood instability and more anxiety overall.
that all sounds very unfortunate and like a good moment to take a second to appreciate that reading books is available to you and doing good things for your mental health :)

Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
OH! Great question!
When at the front or back there is a list of names, seperated by family or region or whatever. If you need a list, then it's too much and I will not read it. π€£
hahaha I've only ever encountered this in plays, but it sounds like it would overwhelm me too!
Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
Honest answer: when I'm the author
haha well, at least it sounds like you are aware! :D
Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
I don't think there's a single always-true answer to this, but I do think a book can have too many characters.
The one that I've seen break books most often is just having way too many point-of-view characters (ala Wheel of Time or Game of Thrones). Like, at some point, the plotline proliferation that results from giving us so many different points of view just shatters and narrative cohesion, because there are only two options for the book's progression: either give us a small amount of every plotline, thereby ensuring that time barely passes and events don't move forward, or give us a focus on only one or two plotlines while ignoring the rest, in which case we're left wondering about what's been left hanging, and was it really that important if we can go such a stretch without checking in on it?
Oh yeah, I haven't read Wheel of Time or Game of Thrones, but think Brandon Sanderson is getting close to that level in the Stormlight Archive. You make good points!
Thereβs nothing quite like getting to spend a slow Saturday morning reading with your pets. As we settle more and more into cold weather, Nessie gets cuddlier and cuddlier. Even though the winter months can suck, Iβll gladly take extra cuddling and reading time any day.
Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
When you canβt remember whoβs who and they all feel the same.
definitely sounds like a case of too many characters!

Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
i think my answer is: when they don't all add something to moving the story forward
characters are, first and foremost, tools of storytelling, so they've gotta have a reason for being there. when i started reading Stephen King's longer novels, where he gives you the perspective of some random person in town, it took me a while to see what he was doing. but he was using them to give the reader information the main characters didn't have, which added a lot to the horror experience
i cannot think of an example of too many characters coz i usually dnf those π but there we go
yeah, that sounds reasonable - though sometimes I do think that some things characters add to a story could have been added by/spread across fewer characters and it could cause fewer distraction of the "who was that again?" variety

When does a book have too many characters?
When it makes me take out a pen and paper and start making a character list.
whoa :D I love picture answers, that's awesome (even though it means that there were too many characters in this book, haha)

Weekly Bookish Question #493 (May 24th - May 30th, 2026)
When does a book have too many characters?
When even the author can't remember the details about all their characters (looking at you, George R. R. Martin).
yup, that sounds reasonable!
