So, the buzzard is one of my favorite animals and here are some reasons why. Buzzards are symbols for patience and perseverance. Have you ever seen these bad boys circling the skies? They do this for hours on end. They are rewarded for their patience with a tasty meal. Buzzards help keep the world cleaner of the rot and debris of death. They are such necessary creatures. They are symbols of renewal. They literally “eat death.” They tell us to use our senses to be aware of the opportunities that are available to us. Everyday they wait to pick clean the bones of what is no longer and every morning they stretch their wings to the new day. They do this (pictured) to allow the sun to bake off remnants and bacteria that could grow on them from previous meals. Did you know that buzzards urinate on their feet? They also do this to cleanse their feet from more bacteria because the urine acts like a bleach. Again, showing us how resourceful buzzards are. They’re also cleaner than most of us probably imagined, right? Buzzards remind us to work smarter, not harder. Ancient Egyptians viewed vultures as mothering and feminine energies as they tend to their young for about 3 months which is quite a long time for a bird. Some cultures like the ancient Iranians, Zoroastrians and Tibetan Buddhists participated in “sky burials” in which they would leave their deceased to be picked over by vultures. This was an honorable process, as the vulture was a symbol of renewal and so, in a creative way, the deceased were given new life by their remains being consumed by the vulture. Native American shamans used them to predict weather patterns by watching their flight. Buzzards show us that life is an ever turning wheel. Buzzards are deemed as unclean and “ugly” by most I would say, but I view them as beautiful. Everyone and everything has a job to do. #lovetheunloved
