there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't think anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.

what does Tolkien said us about Sauron's "real name", anyway?

interesting this passage in Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, The Departure of Boromir:

‘I have not seen these tokens before,’ said Aragorn. ‘What do they mean?’ ‘S is for Sauron,’ said Gimli. ‘That is easy to read.’ ‘Nay!’ said Legolas. ‘Sauron does not use the elf-runes.’ ‘Neither does he use his right name, nor permit it to be spelt or spoken,’ said Aragorn. ‘And he does not use white. The Orcs in the service of Barad-duˆ r use the sign of the Red Eye.’

interesting that the S can't stand for Sauron because 'he does not use his right name' (and indeed the S in this case stands for Saruman, who instead liked his name well enough). so we can assume that he didn't like being called 'Abhorred' even in the Third Age, when this description was more than accurate. we do not know if he used the name Mairon even in the Third Age (it seems that he stopped calling himself Mairon after the Fall of Numenor, but i don't own "Words, Phrases and Passages in Various Tongues in The Lord of the Rings", that where JRRT talked about Sauron's original name so i cannot check at the moment. however i am trusting Tolkien Gateway on this one, especially when Sauron lost his fair appearence in the Fall) but it's telling how the Uruk-hai can only be Saruman's because Sauron would not refer himself as Sauron, nor permit his servants to use it.

Sauron is, then, his right name. Mairon may have been the name he used before Melkor corrupted him, but Sauron is the right name, the name that accurately describes him now, and that shows his ultimate nature: not Admirable One, but the Abhorred, and that's how people who know him for what he is should call him.

Sauron cannot, therefore, be the name of the 'evil part' of Sauron, as opposed as Mairon that's the 'good part' of Sauron (again, he's not Jekyll/Hyde!) because he did not like being called Sauron, and calls himself Tar-Mairon when he goes to Numenor with the precise intent of use its population for his purposes. it's a little bit more complicated than that!

What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.

So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.
