I’m rewatching season 5 “Changing Channels” and I’m at the part with Dr. Sexy and wtffffff is that sign pointing at dean in the background??

I mean this was a long time ago so I’m sure this has already been pointed out but what the fffffff

FIRST WORDS I HEARD CLEAR AS A BELL, DEAN WINCHESTER IS SAVEDSEPTEMBER 18TH 2008

I am emotionally drained. Just….beaten down….

I got off the phone with my mother, who is a part of an advocacy group for drug addicts, to help rally support for more afforadble and easier access to rehab, and to get them into recovery homes, with mental health services, and she just told me of a horror story.

A woman in the group, convinced her son, who is addicted and trying to get clean, to go to a recovery home, for a few months. The group gave him counseling and compassion.

Unfortunately, he started withdrawing so bad that they feared he would die. The husband and wife team that runs the group, lost their son to overdose years ago which is why they started the group. They help those in withdraw, but they can only do so much, and this one guy’s situation was far too severe, he was shaking, incoherent etc. Addicts can very easily die of withdraw. So they called an ambulance for him.

The emts delivered him to the hospital, but the hospital’s nurse staff told him to walk home.

Walk….home…

He was vomiting, shaking, barely walking….

His mother tried calling the hospital to see if he arrived–she was not allowed to ride with him. And NO ONE at the hospital would tell her anything. So the son barely managed to use a phone and call his mom for help. She drove there, and demanded that he stay overnight for observation, because he could start seizing up and fucking die.

None of the nurses examined him. They said “we wanna watch the hurricane on tv”. And told them to leave or they will call security. Security did show, and the guard started taunting them.

The advocacy group tried getting in contact with the staff’s superiors, but no one was available.

And….then….the nurses…..started laughing at the guy…who was shaking and crying…..The nurses….laughed at a crying man….

The group had to arrange for a benevolent private doctor to drive to the hospital to treat the guy, and take him back to the group home, but without the proper equipment should his vitals start dropping.

Mom told me there are so many horror stories….hospital staff saying to addicts “oh look, another junkie” and refusing to treat someone clearly in distress. Even a local sheriff here made public statements about wanting to let ODing people die, because narcan is “too expensive” at a measley 37$ a vial. (An ODing person only needs one or two doses…but also….we are really putting a dollar number on human life now, huh?)

Dont give me that shit that “oh they asked for it, they are low lifes, addicts deserve it”.

Fuck you.

I…dont know….how to convince you….that we should care about people….

You are either an asshole….or you arent.

And the way we as a society treat sick people….who want to get better…trying to seek treatment….victims of mental illness combined with physical dependency on a toxin just to feel normal….is fucking inhumane, and atrocious.

We chose to not understand this illness–it absolutely is an illness when all medical associations across the world say it is–and keep the conversation halted at that debate, instead of allowing discussion for solutions…for COMPASSION….

Shame. On. Us.

And shame on any nurse who took an OATH to treat people, no matter what happened to them.

The next time you trash talk addicts, just remember you could have blood on your hands. What if that guy died? How many have died because of this pervasive attitude that addicts are subhuman? This is one of the biggest epidemics we have ever seen, drug usage especially opioids, and its only getting worse. Your stigma is PART OF WHY ITS GETTING WORSE.

And if you shake your head thinking “good, let them die”……again….

I. Do not. Know. How. To. Tell. You. We. Should. Care. About. People.

There were three that I noticed:  When Sam and Dean first got to the campus, they passed two girls that Dean turned to look at.  He then said, “I’m sorry I made you leave,” to Sam.  Then there was the shot of some girl’s ass when the boys were in the cafeteria.  When they were outside walking agiain, two girls passed them and Dean turned around and took a step to follow them but almost immediately turned back to catch up with Sam, saying, “I’m never gonna make it.”

Because Sam has this image of Dean, and it disturbs him when Dean does things that don’t fit it.  Like listening to Taylor Swift.  Or being off his feed.  Or not ogling pretty girls. Not swilling booze. Watching chick flicks like Black Swan. And so on.

There are so many canon examples of Sam policing Who Dean Is just by having his own understanding of Who Dean Is. The one that jumps right to mind is how drastically comparable his feelings are about Dean building happiness for himself in other people. At the end of s5, Sam tells Dean to find Lisa and build a life with her and Ben and we get this idea that Sam wants Dean to be Happy Apple Pie Life. And Dean does this, kinda, to the best of his ability at the time.

Then, it’s different circumstances, yeah, but Dean manages to build a relationship with Benny that DOES bring him happiness but he hides it from Sam as long as he can and then when he does find out, Sam’s reaction is violent. Dean is happy, but it’s not the Happy Apple Pie Life. It’s the, fucking, Happy Cake Life.

It makes me look at every time he bursts in on Dean and Cas having a moment and feels awkward, or clears his throat to break up the Gay settling in the air, a little different.

I mean, speaking as someone with massive anxiety, sometimes you change one little thing like a new hairstyle choice and then the first person whose opinion you respect looks up at your head and goes, “Oh! You did something different!” and then you immediately regret everything and as soon as you’re alone hurriedly undo your hair and swear never to do that particular thing again just because someone saw (even if the whole point of doing it in the first place was so people would see - no lie, I once shifted my parting an inch to the right, got this reaction, put it back dead centre, and was too scared to try again with off-centre partings for like 8 years). With Dean and his issues with presenting a certain face, I guess anything from Sam would push him back 3 steps.

I’m not exactly sure how much I trust the characterisation offered by the writers of this episode but at least from a meta level trying to offer justification for it all, Dean playing up his grossest sides in front of Sam was almost a nothing’s changed as a direct result of the Taylor Swift thing showing too much that he had changed.

Thinking about shipper!Sam, there’s a difference between Sam knowing about Dean’s Cas-sized blindspot and actually mentally encouraging it as per fanon shipper!Sam - “because it’s Cas” doesn’t come much before Sam confesses he worries Dean would pick another vampire or angel over him for not being good enough. Sam’s as much damaged by his and Dean’s relationship as Dean is - and though he likes Cas and on a good day wouldn’t ever, you know, actively get between them or anything (and has even played peace maker between them) you’ve both reminded me that on a bad day that he is deeply insecure about it and that might bleed through sometimes. TBH shipper!Sam is a nice thought because if we take Sam as face value not-shipper!Sam, that dark undercurrent of resentment from Dean’s other attachments is there making it a much more depressing dynamic between the three of them. I’m kind of interested to re-watch season 8 now for this POV because I can kind of see this story about Sam without even thinking too hard. 

I wonder now if season 9’s opening half with Cas being constantly pushed away by Dean for the sake of Sam had Gadreel in the mix as a sort of metaphor enabler for Dean trying to push Cas away as a direct emotional result of Sam’s confession because, like how he hides other parts of himself even from Sam or plays them down (i.e. the development with liking Taylor Swift at the end was so startling because he’d already done the expected by complaining loudly about her very existence to make it clear he knew this was Not The Thing Dean Would Like and to make sure Sam knew that…)

It’s only after Dean proved to Sam he could shove Cas away that Sam and Cas began their BFF club from First Born onwards…

Urgh I really don’t like this line of thought, not least because it’s an extremely thin line between us thinking critically about what we see on our screens and people accusing Destiel shippers of vilifying Sam. (Which I am absolutely not doing - I’m actually awash with miserable Sam feelings while typing all this.)

The fact is, Sam’s also pretty broken, but in different ways from Dean. We get to see Dean’s broken places all the time, but we seldom see Sam’s.  Doesn’t mean they’re not there, though.  Sacrifice exposed Sam’s brokenness in a big way, and I can see that playing a part in Dean pushing Cas away in season 9. 

It’s easy to see Sam as being far less broken than Dean, because seeming able to take any emotional blow and still function is Sam’s version of the WMP. (We saw the dark side of that in Mystery Spot.)  Most of the time we forget how damaged Sam is because he’s very good at faking normal, and we tend to take him at face value because that’s what he wants to happen.  But we really, really shouldn’t.

Yeah, this is something Dean does a LOT.  It’s not just Sam he wants to convince that he’s still the Same Old Dean.

How many times have we seen him show a very different side that doesn’t fit the WMP, and in the next episode or two we’ll get him reverting back to his season 1 and 2 persona?  SO MANY, is what.  And that behavior almost always elicits a HUGE expression of outrage from the fandom.  Rock and a Hard Place is a perfect example; there was all kinds of pining over Cas (not to mention the ogling), and the fanfic gap, and then bam, Susie. (Er, so to speak.)
