My friend Wesal (@deemagaza) doesn't speak English. The only way she can find her way around the English internet is by using Google Translate or ask others like me for help. It is very difficult for her.
Yet she has no choice but to do so for her daughter Farah, almost sixteen now, who is autistic and has a kidney problem that - without treatment - makes her deficient in potassium, which, if it becomes too severe, can lead to cardiac arrest.
^ Farah spends most of her days like this now, feeling uncomfortable in her body, but not understanding why.
Farah's medication has become unavailable in Gaza, which has endangered her life and means she has to be treated in the hospital, which is costly and where they are running out of resources as well. Farah's case has now been referred to the WHO to be transferred abroad. If the opportunity for evacuation arises, we must make sure the funds are available!

my first reading in my African history class this year is about why using “tribe” to refer to ethnic groups stems from a racist desire to make African conflicts sound primitive or stemming from a desire to pretend that these are just ancient conflicts that have always existed. great article and I also feel like I’m vicariously experiencing the bullshittery that this author has been subjected to from people they’ve tried to talk to about this. like the article remains extremely professional but you can just hear in the tone that they’re talking through gritted teeth, you can practically see the customer service smile

I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.

Before the season started there was a lot of talk about how beautiful and romantic it would be to see Louis through Lestat's eyes. Especially remembering that it's kind of striking how most of the season Lestat's perspective of Louis is so lacking of warmth, romance, even basic respect for him as a person. Lestat doesn't often sound just angry but downright disdainful, even in his subconscious. Louis' narration in s1 and s2 was so full of love for Lestat even after everything Lestat did to him and Claudia, while Louis hasn't even done anything to deserve such loathing. Liar, pimp, whore, is this really how Lestat views Louis? It's sad to think about how in the very first episode Louis says that with Lestat for the first time in his life he was seen
This is far from the biggest issues with the season obviously but oh my GOD the self aware or self refential humor was horrendous!! I know that a post about the paper eating and nola hurricane made its rounds but armand saying something about his ipad in the torture scene was so cringey. Literally because everyone made armand ipad mine craft jokes about the 2nd season. Tryhard stuff. Get real writers. Remember when this show was funny?
the most glaring problem with self-referential humor is that it's very outdated. it's very 00s-10s type of humor. and believe me, i loved it when we get first strong examples of it in tv shows and movies, because it was unique. but it's not the type of humor that can survive for long, because it's derivative by its nature. just like postmodern only works as reaction to "modern": the cynicism in art works wonders when it's a reaction to abundance of meaning and self-expression the modern provides (and when the narrative integrity/authority of classic art is everywhere too), but it's a very weak and empty concept on its own.
and you could even say, well, tvl tried to be a cynical/ironic reaction to iwtv, just like s2 of iwtv was trying to be (in some ways) an ironic reaction to s1. maybe the show is trying to replicate progression of art movements and ideas. but here's the problem: while it could work in theory, we also need to consider the real world, and in the real world we're surrounded by postmodern art. we grew up with it. we're flooded by it. iwtv was actually a breath of fresh air with its sincerity, strong themes and a powerful personal narrative because it's so fucking rare nowadays lol. so tvl just doesn't work in the context of reality, because it's actually more in agreement with mainstream artistic and cultural movement of the previous two decades (arguably something we're slowly moving away from) than iwtv was. so it's backwards!
and idk if rolin and the rest of gen x-ers on his team realize it and understand how cringy and weak tvl is in comparison to iwtv. gen x-ers are infamously weak for cynical self-referential narratives. maybe they do realize it and that's why they keep saying that tvl will be better in the next 10 years, maybe we'll have another "cynical" and "ironic" art movement popular at that point...
like, i'm serious. i think i finally had a revelation and i already said it in the comments to ash's post, but i think rolin is going through very difficult artistic crisis right now, and he obviously had some disagreements with other writers in iwtv and maybe felt pressured by amc, so he's basically taking out his frustrations on actors and fans of the show. like a lot of toxic men do.
he's not exactly trolling, but he's clearly voicing his ideas that were discussed in iwtv s1&2 writers' room but were dismissed for the lack of complexity and/or because they'd trap the writers in a corner and they were smart enough to avoid it.
he expressed some of this in tvl where he had most of creative control. it became obvious to me after "two lies" line by armand: this is something rolin said back in 2024 and he said it was "his interpretation" that a lot of people in the writers' room disagreed with. but he was putting it in a character's mouth now because he could. and he's trying to word-of-god a lot of stuff now in the interviews.
he's unravelling and he can't get over how little narrative control he had in s1&2 because there was a pushback by the writers and directors who tried to make a good story and then there was amc who tried to control the narrative as well. like many men who feel powerless, he's taking it out on everyone who supported or loved his work.

I'm so tired of people excusing logical fallacies in TVL with "Nothing is REAL! It's all RETELLING! No one is objective and nothing is the truth!" Do you realize how weak of a narrative device that is? Don't you feel insulted that the writers would resort to something like this? To excuse their own poor writing choices? Nothing is ever real so we can change character's personalities, retcon events, shift time lines around, and you the watcher don't get to say anything, because NOTHING IS REAL.
It's like they're punishing people who were invested and cared about the show, almost as if going AHA! GOTCHA! like all I did wasn't ...caring about the characters and paying attention to what they spent two seasons setting up.

I think the issue is that people are describing this as a bad TV season, but it's really much deeper than that. The final season of Sherlock was a bad season, the final season of Game of Thrones was a bad season. TVL / IWTV 3 is anti-Black. It is misogynistic. It has an open and glaring disdain for its Black and brown characters, and chose to be virulently anti-Black in a time of increased anti-Blackness. You are watching the corpse/ghost of a Black girl hurl racist garbage in a time where Black people are regularly being called slurs for simply existing. You are watching a Black man be branded... BRANDED! You are watching the whitewashing and babying of an unquestionably racist white man who beat his Black partner / helped lynch (yes, lynch, not stone) his Black daughter. You are seeing this done at the expense of a brown man.
Keep in mind, the characters are not making independent choices, you are not watching a documentary —you are watching the deliberate choices of an all white writers' room and a white show runner in a period of time where seventeen Black people have been lynched this year. In a time where countless Black people have been murdered in cold blood in June and July 2026 alone. This shit doesn't exist in a vacuum and pretending it does only adds more insult to injury. There is no turning your brain off in the midst of a slow genocide of Black people in america.
