Going to probably re-do this since finding a font I love, but all the same, might be helpful
A compilation of stuff I know about drawing Asian faces and Asian culture! I feel like many âHow-To-Drawâ tutorials often default to European faces and are not really helpful when drawing people of other races. So I thought Iâd put this together in case anyone is interested! Feel free to share this guide and shoot me questions if you have any! Iâm by no means an expert, I just know a few things from drawing experience and from my own cultural background.Â
More often than not Iâll crack into a sprawling fantasy series and, while I appreciate the luscious descriptions of furniture, landscapes, and clothing, all Iâm focused on is that I donât actually know how this world works. I only know what it looks like. Â
Including some functionality to your universe can add to immersion and give your reader a strong foundation on which to build their mental model of your universe.Â
You certainly donât need to use all of these questions! In fact, I recommend against that, as all of these certainly wonât make it into your final draft. I personally find that starting my worldbuilding off with 5 to 10 functional questions helps pave the way for glittery and elaborate aesthetic development later on.
How is the healthcare funded in your world?
How does healthcare functionally differ between the wealthy and the poor? (i.e. can only the wealthy go to hospitals? do poor families often have to rely on back-alley procedures?)
Where are health centers (i.e. hospitals, small clinics, etc.) organized in your cities?
Does it differ in smaller towns?
How does this affect peopleâs ability to get healthcare?
Is healthcare magical, and if it is, how does that affect the healthcare system?Â
If healing is instantaneous, how does that affect peopleâs views on injury, illness, and chronic ailments?
If you have both magical and physical healthcare, which one is deemed superior and how does that affect society?Â
What illnesses are common in your world?Â
How does this affect daily life?Â
What do the people in your world think illnesses are?Â
Is it a miasma theory?Â
Humor theory?Â
Demons?Â
Do they know about biological viruses and bacteria?Â
How does this affect healthcare?
How do people get water?Â
Is the water sanitary and if not, how do they sanitize it?
How does agriculture work?Â
Is it large corporations or individual farms?
What sort of agricultural technology exists in your world and how does it affect food production?
Are farmers wealthy or poor?
What sort of natural resources does your world/country(ies) have and how are they obtained?
How does this affect the average wealth of the country?
How does this wealth affect the culture?Â
What livestock or beasts of burden are most valued? Least valued? Why?
What is considered a luxury good vs. a regular good?
What forms of transportation does your world have?
What classes use what forms of transportation?
How far has the average citizen traveled, given your transportation limitations?
Which cities are the most accessible and which are the least? Why?
How do popular transportation methods change how cities/towns are laid out?
Does your world have public transportation? What is it?
Is there a coming-of-age aspect to travel?
Describe your worldâs postal system or whatever equivalent there is.Â
Who pays for it?Â
How reliable is it?Â
Are there emergency methods for transporting information?
How does your world keep time (i.e. watches, sundials, water clock, etc.)?
Does your world have a currency system, barter system, or something else?Â
If you have multiple countries, do different currencies have different values across said countries?
How does this affect travel?
Do you have banks in your world and if so, how are they run?
Who owns the banks? Government? Wealthy? How does this affect the economy and/or class system?
How does credit operate in your universe?
Does your world operate more on big corporations or small business? Something in between?
How are workers/labourers treated in your world?Â
Are there workers unions and if so, what are common views on unions?Â
Describe your tax system. If you donât have a tax system, explain why and how your world is affected by that.Â
Can certain social classes not own property, certain livestock, certain businesses, etc.? Why?
How are business records kept? Are business records kept?
If your world has technology, does your world prioritize developing entertainment tech, communications tech, transportation tech or something else entirely?
What does this say about your world?
How does this affect your economy?
To the closest approximation, what type of government does your world have?Â
How are rulers/presidents/nobles put in place?Â
How much power does an individual ruler have?Â
Is there a veto process?Â
If you have multiple countries, do they have different types of rulers?
Describe any large-scale alliances (i.e. countries, factions, etc.) that are present in your world.Â
How did they come about and how are they maintained?Â
Are they strained or peaceful?Â
How does it affect the greater politics of your world?
Describe how wars are fought both internationally and nationally.Â
Do methods of war differ between countries/races?Â
What about philosophies about war?
If there is a military, what is its hierarchy structure?
How does the military recruit?
Is the military looked upon favourably in your society?
What weapons are used by each country/type of people during warfare, and how does that affect war strategies?
Describe the sentencing system of your world.Â
Is your accused innocent until proven guilty, or guilty until proven innocent?
How are lawbreakers punished?Â
If you have prisons, describe how they are organized and run, and who owns them.Â
Does differing ownership change how the prisons operate?
What are the major ways in which laws between countries vary?Â
Do laws between cities vary? If so, how and why?
How does citizenship work in your world? What rights and privileges do citizens have that others do not?Â
Can certain classes or races not become citizens?
Are there certain taboo subjects or opinions that artist/authors/musicians are not allowed to depict (i.e. portraying the official religion in a negative light, explicit sexual material, etc.)? What does this say about your society?
How do people get around these censorship laws?
What is the official hierarchy of duty in your world? (i.e. is family the most important, or patriotism? What about clan?)
How many languages are there in your world, and how many languages share a common origin?Â
How many people are multilingual?Â
Which language is the most common?
How is multilingualism viewed?
How are different languages viewed? (i.e. is one language ugly/barbaric while another is romantic and sensual?)
Feel free to add your own questions in reblogs or in comments!
Reblogging for reference.
Platonic love is real love and shouldnt be treated like less becuase it isnt romantic. Defining love as only romantic is a terrible concept. You should be able to love people in a platonic way as much as romantic way and not be seen as less
The Greeks were so much wiser than us modern folk, when talking about love. They believed it existed in eight different forms:
1. Eros (erotic love). This is, simply put, the sexual attraction you feel towards someone. In its best form, passion can be transformative⌠but it can also become destructive if not kept under control.
2. Philos (friendship). This is the love we treat as lesser in the modern world. Ironically, the Greeks considered it superior to eros as philos was considered a love between two equals and free of the animalistic pull of sexual desire. Philos is the kind of love two warriors whoâve shared a foxhole feel for one another.
3. Storge (familial love). This is the love and pride we take in our kinsmen and lifelong friends. For those who are deeply attached to their family name, who remember family members who pass on with great fondness⌠This is the name the Greeks, a culture based very much on accruing honour to oneâs name and descendants, bestowed on this form of love, as it was so very important to them.
4. Ludus (playful love). The affection between young lovers, this is what we modern folk call âpuppy love.â The flirting, teasing and childlike euphoria at being in a new relationship is all part and parcel of this form of love. The Greeks felt that love should have a sense of fun and play; it need not be serious 100% of the time.
5. Mania (obsessive love). This is what happens when love gets scary, and is the purview of stalkers and the most deluded among us. The Greeks believed that this occurs when thereâs an imbalance between the presence of ludus and eros in oneâs psyche. Those who experience this form of love also become codependent, and may be perpetrators of abuse of their loved ones.
6. Pragma (enduring love). This is a mature form of love, having aged like fine wine with time. Itâs commonly seen in couples who have been married for decades, and is something we all secretly yearn for â the companionship that looks beyond our limitations, yet loves us for our frail humanity. A love where we are accepted unconditionally and will never stray from us. Itâs hard to find, and takes a lot of time and patience to cultivate.
7. Philautia (self-love). This is where having a âpositive mental attitudeâ and engaging in self-care comes in. The Greeks understood that, in order to care for others, we must first tend to ourselves. This is not a sense of vanity, but an awareness and acceptance of who you really are, showing yourself compassion in darker times.
8. Agape (brotherhood). This is the greatest form of love there is, and the hardest to aspire to. It demands nothing less than feeling love for all human beings, compassion for all creatures, an acceptance and forgiveness of the flaws of humanity, and the desire to ease the pain of those who suffer. To see in the eyes of every human being your brother, your sister â when humanity, in your mind, becomes your extended family. Itâs not about paying lip service to religions that preach compassion, itâs about showing love for others in every word and deed.
So, if you thought romantic love (eros) was all there is to knowing and feeling love? You thought wrong. Letâs learn to love love in all its forms.
Awesome

Why do my interests in canning, couponing, and homesteading overlap so often with blogs with titles like âThe Obedient Housewifeâ?Â
Like, Iâm like, âI want to learn to make soap and farm,â and suddenly I see 500 âtraditional familyâ motherfuckers like no you are mistaken. I am just a simple lesbian anticapitalist looking to limit my consumerism as much as possible.
âthese fun crafts will keep your kids occupied until your husband gets home!â no i want a clothespin crown for me
As a nerd who homesteads, let me share the data I have gathered!
First is my megalist of homesteading-related links Iâve gathered over the years. Iâm a mod over at r/homesteading and this is where Iâve put a lot of good sources (not all, admittedly some are still sitting in my bookmark folder waiting to be added). The search function at reddit is wretched, but thereâs also been lots of good things Iâve shared there too. Please note that many of these sources are not actual webpages, but PDFs. Thatâs not an accident, PDFs are where you find the really good in-depth stuff.
Many of my sources are from the Extension Service. They wonât try to relate to you based on your lifestyle or sexual identity or religion or whatever, but due to that, they also wonât be alienating you either.
The Cooperative Extension Service (US only) exists in all 50 states and in most counties. It is taxpayer funded. The Extension Service exists to help people become more self sufficient, for farmers to be more successful, for people to be healthier, for kids to be well adjusted, to figure out how to grow the best plants in your area, etc. Some county offices even offer cheap classes in things like gardening, canning, soap making, and theyâre taught by people with training in these areas (I once heard a great talk on composting from a soil scientist that way). Do you want to know what type of plant something is? Do you need help figuring out a plant disease or pest issue? You can now contact them online and get great info.
I HIGHLY recommend checking out your stateâs extension service website, because they do offer different types of information, depending on what is grown/raised where you are (and how well funded they are). My county extension puts out a monthly gardening newsletter, which includes a helpful âthis is the time of the year to do â-â part.
Hereâs an example from North Carolina - check out that left sidebar
Hereâs an example from California - this website is HUGE so dig around
Hereâs an example from New York - they have a calendar at the bottom, showing how they have things like hydroponic and urban agriculture workshops coming up.
Interested in raising animals? Penn State Extension is really really good. They have tons of free materials and courses available online, some I pulled for my megalist at the top of this.
National Center for Home Food Preservation - they cover the important aspects of food safety, and also have some recipes. Many state Extension Service websites will have lots more recipes.
If you have kids, check out 4-H programs for them. Itâs part of the local public school system here. If youâre homeschooling, you can also purchase their science-filled educational and self sufficiency materials (materials are divided by age ranges - Cloverbud Member: ages 5-8, Junior Member: ages 9-13, Senior Member: ages 14-19). One of my coworkers is in 4-H, sheâs still in high school, and last year she raised an award-winning heifer.
Congress grants the money for funding these programs, and theyâre connected with various universities. Thereâs a level of cutting edge scientific knowledge and academic rigor you donât find in blogs or even most books. Thereâs LOTS of homesteading books filled with outdated information like âtill the earth every yearâ hell I still have older coworkers who do it and Iâm trying to figure out how to gently tell them that theyâre destroying their soil that way, and that thereâs better methods now, methods grounded in science.

So, when I was doing my thesis on whether or not fanfiction should be considered a legitimate genre of literature, my advising professor asked me for examples.  I gave him the generic ones, of course - âPride & Prejudice and Zombiesâ is a horror fanfic of âPride & Prejudiceâ, â50 Shades of Greyâ is an erotica fic of âTwilight" - and that seemed to make him understand what fanfiction is, but not how itâs useful.  So I thought about it, and, after about a minute, I said, âParadise Lost is basically a fanfiction of the Book of Genesis.  And The Divine Comedy is an epic self-insertion fic for Catholic doctrine.  So, basically, you were teaching us fanfiction last semester.â  I had never before seen a grown manâs eyes widen with such fear, incomprehension, disgust, awe, and understanding.

hey gyns let me plug a book for a second. its a childhood favorite of mine, but its also one of the best fairy tale books for little girls, imho. its called âthe serpent slayer: and other stories of strong womenâ, and its a collection of fairy tales from around the world whose main characters are women. some of my favorite stories from it include:
neesowa and the chenoo - when an injured chenoo (an evil, cannibalistic monster) stumbles upon neesowaâs camp, she throws the monster off balance by treating him with kindness and sharing her home with him as he recovers, which pays off when another chenoo attacks her camp.
grandmother skull - a young woman, neruvana, marries a man who kills her entire family and abandons her. thankfully, the skull of her grandmother comes to life to teach her how to survive and to help her get revenge.Â
beebyeebyee and the water god - a young woman, beebyeebyee, falls in love with a water god who is slain by the envious people of her village. she gets revenge.
three whiskers from a lions chin - maria wants to help her husband, who returned from war a changed man, and the local bruja sends her off to get three whiskers from a lions chin, apparently a key ingredient in a magic spell that will bring her husband back to himself. when she brings the whiskers back to the bruja, the woman explains that there is no magic spell, but that with time, and the same patience she used to get the whiskers, she can help her husband recover.Â
the old woman and the devil - a brilliant old woman faces off with the devil in a bet to convince him to leave her spot in the shade. she outwits him, and undoes the harm he did as well.
duffy the lady - a version of rumplestiltskin where a housekeeper who cant knit or spin accepts a deal with a devil who will do the tasks for her for three years, if she will marry him at the end of the three years if she cannot guess his name. spoiler alert: she can.Â
sister lace - a creation myth about the stars, when the emperor hears of sister laceâs incredible lace-making abilities, he has her brought to the palace and ordered to marry him. when she refuses, he has her imprisoned unless she can spin him a live rooster. her skill and blood bring the bird to life, but she remains imprisoned, until, eventually, she finds her way out.Â
a marriage of two masters - a very intelligent young woman who speaks only in riddles meets a man who sees the world the same way, and as they decipher one anothers riddles, they fall in love.Â
clever marcella - marcella, a genius, fascinates the prince, and they agree to marry, provided she not interfere with his rule. when she feels compelled to challenge a ridiculous ruling he made on a case, he orders her to take whatever she likes from the palace and then leave. she solves the problem as anyone in love would, compels the prince to see the error of his ways, and becomes the kingdoms chief justice.
the rebel princess - to escape an unwanted arranged marriage, judith and her ladies-in-waiting take to the open sea. when they come across a ship of pirates who decide they will each marry one of the women, the crew steal their clothes, their treasure, and their lives. by the end of the story, judith has been crowned king in place of an heir-less king who drowned.Â
its just a really, really good book, with a portrayal of women that most fairy tales dont have. theyre kind and wise mentors and teachers, not wicked stepmothers and ugly hags, and an undeveloped marriage to a man isnt their be-all and end-all. i really encourage you to get a copy for any little girls in your life, especially who enjoy fairy tales.Â
Sounds awesome!
THE ILLUSTRATOR IS TRINA SCHART HYMAN WHO WAS A FANTASTICALLY COOL LADY THAT YOU SHOULD READ ABOUT AND ADMIRE AS MUCH AS I GREW UP DOING AND WHO PROBABLY DESERVES HER OWN WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED FAIRY TALE

This is a great post what makes it even better is that most of these you can get from Ninite which will download and install the latest versions of all available software ALL AT ONCE without you having to worry about adware or the annoying clutter (toolbars, changing your default search engine) that sometimes comes with their individual installers. So, yeah. Have at it folks.

TIL of the âTiffany Problemâ. Tiffany is a medieval nameâshort for Theophaniaâfrom the 12th century. Authors canât use it in historical or fantasy fiction, however, because the name looks too modern. This is an example of how reality is sometimes too unrealistic.
via reddit.com
âAuthors canât use it in fantasy fiction, eh? Weâll see about thatâŚâ
âTerry Pratchett, probably
Try to implement anything but a conservativeâs sixth grade education level of medieval or Victorian times and you will butt into this. all. the. time. There was a literaly fad in the 1890â˛s for nipple rings for all genders(and NO, it was NOT under the mistaken belief that it would help breastfeedingâthereâs LOTS of doctorsâ writing at the time telling people to STOP and that they thought it would ruin the breastâs ability to breastfeed well, etc). It was straight up because the Victorians were freaks, okay Imagine trying to make a Victorian character with nipple rings. IMAGINE THE ACCUSATIONS OF GROSS HISTORICAL INACCURACY
people just really, REALLY have entrenched ideas of what people in the past were like tell them the vikings were clean, had a complex democratic legal system, respected women, had freeform rap battles, and had child support payments? theyd call you a liar tell them that chopsticks became popular in china during the bronze age because street food vendors were all the rage and they wanted to have disposable eating utensils? theyll say youre making that up tell them native americans had a trade network stretching from canada to peru and built sacred mounds bigger then the pyramids of giza? you are some SJW twisting facts ancient egypt had circular saws, debt cards, and eye surgery? are you high? our misconception of medieval peasants being illiterate and living in poverty in one room mud huts being their own creation as part of a century long tax aversion scam? you stole that from the game of thrones reject bin iron age india had stone telescopes, air conditioning, and the number 0 along with all âarabicâ numbers including algebra and calculus? i understand some of those words. romans had accurate maps detailing vacation travel times along with a star rating for hotels along the way, fast food restaurants, swiss army knives, black soldiers in brittany, traded with china, and that soldiers wrote thank-you notes when their parents sent them underwear in the mail? but they thought the earth was flat! ancient bronze age mesopotamia had pedantic complaints sent to merchants about crappy goods, comedic performances, and transgender/nobinary representation? what are you smoking?
Adding my personal favorite: people in medieval Europe took baths.
India had ways of processing iron for weatherproofing that we still canât match 1600 years later.
Truth is stranger than fiction, and history is weirder than you think.
this post gets better every time it comes across my dash. To provide some more: those Romans also had vending machines, automated puppet plays, doors that opened to the sound of horns when you lit a fire in front of them, and working steam engines. All invented by one dude, Hero of Alexandria.
People generally want to think that the Dark Ages is the sum of the entire history of the world.
Charlemagne had a frigging PET ELEPHANT, sent as a present by the Caliph over in Bahgdad.
Emperor Frederick II. (around 1200) crossed the Alps with his own private zoo, including giraffes, in order to impress and dazzle his Germanic subjects, and it frigging worked. He also introduced legislation that a doctor was not allowed to also sell medicine (to prevent obvious charlatanery), but had to write a recipe for an apothecary to then redeem, which is a system STILL IN USE in Germany and other countries. He spoke several language, was tolerant towards his Muslim subjects in southern Italy (you read that correctly) and was opposed to trial by combat on reasons of it being unfair and irrational. Oh, and he wrote a book on ornithology.Â
Ancient Persians knew how to make frozen desserts even in summer, thus basically being the inventors of ice cream.
Medieval monks had an efficient way of testing for pregnacy (by pouring the urine of a woman on a toad, which, if the woman was pregnant, would change colourâŚ).
Hereâs a tool to create gradients with the new text feature

HOW DARE YOU SUCKER PUNCH ME WITH THIS IMAGE RIGHT AFTERWARDS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
basic japanese high school schedule for you, fic writers
students attend class from monday thru saturday, with saturday being a half day. sundays are off
the high school day usually runs from 8:30am to 3pm, but many students stay after for after school clubs or attend cram school in the evening
the school year runs from april to march with a summer break come the end of july. first term is from april to july, second term is from september to december, and third term runs from january to march
your favorite high school anime doesnât have separate classrooms for no reason. japanese students donât rotate classes like american students do; instead, they have a fixed classroom and class number (i.e., 3-A), and the teachers do the rotating
they also donât have the same classes every day
they do still have homeroom teachers; however, âhomeroomâ is more of a class meeting at the end of the day rather than at the beginning
the students are required to help clean the school at the end of the school day before clubs start
school uniforms are a thing for high schoolers. dress code used to be much stricter but recently theyâve allowed more basic alterations to the uniform
please stop writing them like american schools youâre embarrassing yourself
Addendum from someone who works at Japanese public schools:
* There are sometimes separate rooms for classes like science labs, music, and home ec. While students stay mostly in the same classroom all day, itâs not like they donât have facilities for subjects that need special equipment.Â
* Classes have anywhere from a 5 minute to 15 minute break between periods, the most common being 10 minutes. Students are wholly unsupervised during this time as teachers often go to organize materials or go to the staff room. This is usually when bullying or other mischief goes on.
* There is no auxiliary staff to speak of. There are no adult hall monitors, security guards, substitute teachers (*), cleaning staff, or secretaries. There is a principal/headmaster, a vice principal/deputy headmaster, and a single coordinator for the staff - two if they both work part-time. There is a school nurse, but they are not required (so usually arenât) to be a certified nurse. If the school serves meals there is a coordinator for the kitchen staff (the former working full time and the latter part time).Â
* After school clubs for junior and senior high school often meet every day, especially if theyâre a sports club. They also are expected to come to the school for special practices or activities during spring, summer, and winter vacations. Non-sports clubs are not exempt from this. Only elementary school age children or very rich upper class kids have the luxury of a vacation to themselves without being at school most of the break.
* Uniforms are for the vast majority of junior and senior high school students. Very elite private high schools will allow more casual dress, but often their students prefer the uniform to show off where they go to school. However, itâs the reverse for elementary school. Public elementary school does not require a daily uniform, though there is a gym uniform and a standardized swimsuit. Very posh private elementary schools require a set of uniforms and it is the most expensive thing a child will probably wear in their life (costing upwards of several hundreds to over a thousand dollars).Â
* Saturday school was technically abolished in the early 2000s, but PTAs and school boards nationwide did not agree with this and so weâre left with voluntary on paper, but actually mandatory special activities and seminars on Saturdays.Â
* Student cleaning of the school can also be done around midday recess, not just at the end of the school day.Â
* Weekly, twice monthly, or monthly morning assemblies take place to inform students of upcoming events, showcase student accomplishments (both individual and team achievements), and/or touch on issues at the school both positive or negative.Â
(*) Substitute teachers exist as in a teacher will be brought in to cover a maternity leave or a teacher leaving halfway through the year (nearly unheard of unless they have an extreme medical problem or have a mental breakdown). If a teacher is sick for a day or up to a week, the other teachers are supposed to rotate stepping in to teach for the absent teacherâs class. There is no system of on-call substitute teachers like in the US or UK.Â
