Here it is: the book we’ll be reading together.

I found in a box of my brother-in-law’s old stuff: he had the complete trilogy in novelization form, which is frankly awesome. All I had in novelization form was Ghost Dad, and to be fair, I remember it being awesome.

“Back To The Future: A Robert Zemeckis Film” (this seems to be the title of the book, judging by the cover) is a fascinating book for several reasons. One, the author was working off of the screenplay, but clearly a version of the screenplay that was not the final one. Two, the author (George Gipe) seems to not have had an editor, as there are sections of the book that are crazy loco. And three, after putting out this book in 1985 to coincide with the release of the film, he was stung to death by bees (this can happen) and was dead in 1986. The other two novelizations were written by a different author and are not nearly as insane/interesting.

I’ve read this book last year and dog-eared all the parts that caught my fancy. In this blog we’ll be hitting the dog-eared pages and you’ll get the experience of reading “Steven Spielberg Presents: Back To The Future: A Robert Zemeckis Film: The Novel by George Gipe based on a screenplay by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale” (full title?) without actually having to read “SSP:BTTF:ARZF:TNBGGBOASBRZABG”

Reminder on this, the VERY DAY an imaginary person came to in an imaginary story we all enjoyed, that one time I reviewed the UTTERLY BONKERS novelization of Back to the Future and ended up writing more than the actual text itself (IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT I PROMISE).

It features: - Doc sending Einstein to hell - lots of brand names - Book Marty speed walking - everyone dying in a nuclear explosion

and that’s just the first few pages!

This, by the way, is one of my favorite blog projects. Ryan’s enthusiasm and genuine love for Back to the Future makes every page of this weird novelization of the third draft of the BTTF script (which wasn’t even the theatrical release version!) an utter delight.

He also collected it in eBook form if you wanna read it offline. You will not be disappointed.

George Gipe also wrote the Gremlins adaptation, which I don’t remember being super-insane. But it did have a part that really stuck with me as a kid—Billy is warned to follow the rules about Gizmo lest dire things befall the world, etc. etc. The chapter ends, and the entire following chapter consists of two words: “Billy forgot.” I definitely need to check out the BTTF novelization.

(Also, that bit about the bees is pretty heartbreaking.)

how could anybody have sympathy for bands that don't read their deals, or for anybody else that didn't review a contract that concerns their career for the next 5 years

my main question is why people think that bands have some kind of right to earn a living (or any money at all). why don’t these people crusade on behalf of painters, ballet dancers, or classical musicians who have an equally difficult time making any money, but don’t even have any fans to kinda make up for it? or for that matter, some poor asshole who works the night shift at a gas station…
