Something I appreciate so much about Pursuit of Jade is Changyu's journey to becoming a General. Everything about how she learned martial arts, picked up a weapon for the first time, killed someone for the first time, all feels so natural. Life happened to her and she had to make choices and act to protect her loved ones. Her dad taught her how to fight but even though her dad forbade her from fighting and showing her skills, once her parents died, she had to start fighting to protect her sister, her home and herself. Then when Changning got kidnapped, she had to go hunt down child traffickers' dens. She had no clue about Changning's whereabouts and so had no choice to but track down and beat up every child trafficker she could find. She didn't do it because she wanted to be a detective or join the police department, which all would've been fine, but for a period woman with pig butchering as her family's business, it just feels so natural that the reason she did all that was to protect her loved one, in this case, Changning. Then in today's episodes, she agreed to go to the army to help Tutor Tao and she came back even though she knew it was dangerous, to protect Tutor Tao. At the end of episode 23, she volunteers to deliver food and medicine to Marquis of Wu'an not because she is looking to get military accolades, but because her dad told her that Marquis of Wu'an is a great man and she knows Marquis of Wu'an massacred Qingfeng Stronghold in retaliation for what happened in Lin'an, so to her he's a man fighting to protect the people (which involves herself and her people) so she wants to help him. In preview of ep 26, she drugs Yan Zheng ( THIS GIRL LOL) because she fears he'll die on the battlefield and goes to war in his place, again, not because she wants to show everyone how "girls are not inferior" but because she wants to protect her loved one, in this case, Yan Zheng. Even the first person she ever killed was to protect Changning.
It would've been fine if she had big ambitions of entering the military or something else entirely from the start like a shounen anime protagonist, but with her living in times of war, having a pig butcher shop to run, it feels natural and so much better that she is where she is at because bad things happened and she fought back every time so she and her family can keep living. In this way, her journey so far is completely in accordance to her belief that no matter what happens, you have to eat and sleep well.
She is a protector and a provider. 10/10 FL.
One of things I appreciate and find interesting about Jin Xuan is that while almost everyone else who knew Xiao Se before his name change continues to call him Xiao Chuhe (even Ye Ruoyi takes a while to start calling him Xiao Se), Jin Xuan actually does refer to Xiao Se by his chosen name.
I wonder if, on some level, Jin Xuan respects or even relates to Xiao Seβs name change in a way that others donβt. After all, before he became a eunuch and was adopted as a disciple of Zhuo Qing, Jin Xuan wasnβt the name he would have been born with. Itβs possible that, when Jin Xuan entered the palace, the change in his name was a way to psychologically separate himself from whatever happened before. Perhaps, even as Xiao Seβs adversary, he wishes to give him that same opportunity, even when it seems that hardly anyone else will.
gesturing at li huai'an: this second male lead could've been an email

the blood of youth | another shifu x disciple pairing roaming jianghu
deeply amused by how wacky all the weapon deities are in the blood of youth. they're like some sort of species of poorly socialized cryptid weapon nerds with emotional issues and the ability to flatten a small city if they're in a bad mood
on swords we've got:
Li Hanyi: spends most of her time avoiding people but emerges once in a while to cause massive property damage. wears a fake mustache as a disguise even when talking to people she knows. destroys a local landmark while beating up two kids. seems to have a grudge war going with like half the jianghu. zero social skills and could not give a single shit about it
Zhao Yuzhen: actual princess in the tower waiting to be rescued by li hanyi. has one of the most powerful swords in the world but makes his own out of wood instead. has been the cause of an evacuation on his own mountain several times. peach fetish
Yan Zhantian: just wanders around the world vibrating with rage. that's pretty much it. he likes swords and is angry
Luo Qingyang: sits in his sad boy fort for like a decade or more building up his incel power levels. when they said prince chi had a godfather i was like what sort of cringefail asshat would have that kid as a godson and then he showed up and i was like. ah. i see. that tracks. extremely powerful but takes massive psychic damage from being called a loser
Xie Xuan: potentially more emotionally stable than the other four. hands out a book of pick up lines to a himbo. wrote said book. li hanyi wants to beat the shit out of him for being annoying (or just for existing? unclear with her). got his title by reading every book ever about swords and does not seem to actually carry a sword that i saw anyway? nerd
and in comparison there's the one and only spear deity Sikong Changfeng who is basically just a normal (but very funny) guy trying to run his jianghu city despite li hanyi knocking half of it down from time to time (i feel it's important to note she is one of his seniors and on his side. she still knocks down dengtian tower and ruins his flower festivals. for the bit). sure he is stupid powerful but somehow he remains pretty stable and is a rare good dad in a cdrama
and then there's "liquor deity" Baili Dongjun who spends half the show drunk in a cave
what a bunch
(please note i have not finished the two prequels yet, please no spoilers thank you)
smile code (currently on ep 8) thoughts
oh my gu yi.. you are me and i am you. there is something about girl chases the guy storylines that get me cringing to my core but this time.. it's a wonderful feeling of tension and uncomfortable. just the right amount. liang daiwen is not your typical cold male lead, well in the traditional sense. his "coldness" has a legit reason at least in the way the drama justifies it. even as early as episode 7, you can sense that his interest or willingness to break out of his void is present. what works in this show so far (for me) is it gives direction and something to look forward to in the coming arcs. it makes you want to root for them, even root for him even tho right now, it looks like his words and actions are hurting her. what matters is how gu yi takes it. she's patient, she's cheerful, a little idealistic, but pretty optimistic. she thrives in feeling special, one has to love being in the spotlight to even work as a stand up comedian and perform in front of a crowd. how much more special would it be like to be favored by someone who genuinely has trouble expressing their feelings? gu yi is a highly empathetic person so on top of feeling bad for liang daiwen struggle with emotional dysregulation, the thought of him not being able to connect with anyone emotionally is unthinkable, literally a nightmare for someone like her. i'm biased and think shen yue is the most adorable person ever, especially with her portraying gu yi with her lovely charm, but i enjoy being able to identify her motivations and wants as a character makes gu yi feel very grounded as a character, rather than a silly lovesick girl. she's genuine, in the naive sort of way, but still makes you want to see her succeed. i also really appreciate the roles that these side characters have filled. it's a nice, very chill watch with heart-fluttering moments. excited for more!
I think sometimes a woman wants to fantasize about a big strong man who will protect her and sometimes she wants a sad, scared wet puppy of a man that she can protect and sometimes both of these men are the same person
