i really love how "You're treading on very thin ice" got translated into "Tumutulay ka sa nakapanipis na kable" (roughly means "You walk a very thin rope" = "You walk a tightrope / fine line") because we don't have winter in the Philippines

10.23.21 | I wonder if thereās a word for the passing of days feeling both fast & interminable at the same time. Iām sure there must be. Itās honestly how Iāve been feeling for the past couple of weeks. While IĀ was able to accomplish a lot of things on my to do lists, every single task just took so much longer than I thought it would. That could either be a testament to how poorly I manage my time, or how unrealistic I am with my daily goals.Ā
Featured above are two of my current reads: American Gods by Neil Gaiman, & The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Other Poems by Oscar Wilde. Iām getting through them slowly as I can only spare an hour or less on reading these days. But no matter how little or how much I read, it always helps to make me feel somewhat saner.

Happy Yule! Taking and posting this to avoid editing a memo because my professorās comments hurt my feelings lmao š„ŗ
to my half-Filipino brothers and sisters (or full-Filipino brothers & sisters who grew up away from the Philippines)
sometimes, you will hear your Tagalog-Filipino cousins say (usually with a morose sounding laugh that carries the tune of both hopelessness and the wish for the sweet embrace of death) something like āoh my god, Iām so sabogā or āHAHA sorry, bro, Iām a little sabawā or āfuck man, iāmĀ basag.ā Using context clues, you can tell that these words mean āI am in a state of extreme fatigue and incoherenceā but here is something you must know:
These three words connote different things.
1) Sabog - youāve had thrā thir⦠teen? cups of coffee. your sure your heart is practically vibrating at this point. you can hear colors and see musicā disembodied voices of self-depreciation have begun to whisper in your ears. but youāre still going because this paper is due at midnight or your boss expects those numbers by this afternoon and youāre willing to do anything. you draw a pentagram on the floor but you summon God because you chanted the incantation wrong and He is worried about you. āyou must sleep. you have not slept in a week, childā He says. you blink up at Him, your eyes burning red because youāve poured crushed coffee beans in them this morning (an accident you roll with because youāre late for work and dead inside, anyway). āWhat is that word?ā you ask Him. āāS-Sleepā?ā
2)Ā Sabaw - the world is hazy through the tears in your eyes. every time you yawn, the voices around you get dimmer and dimmerā ācoffee? no thanks, iāve had a cup.ā your thoughts are molasses, and your movements are shaky, like a new born colt. āhey! how are youā what? can you say that again?ā they repeat it.Ā āwhat?ā they repeat it again. asking them to repeat it a third time is embarrassing, so you laugh instead. are you underwater? are they underwater? has your requirements finally smothered you? physically manifested into an invisible force that is blocking all your senses from perceiving the things around you? you laugh and you laugh. the person you are talking to is shaking you by the shoulders. ācall a doctor!ā they shout, desperate. by their feet, an unconscious man lays.Ā āheās dying, for crying out loud!ā you still canāt understand them, so you laugh.Ā āhaha, yeah.ā god, you want to take a nap.
3)Ā BasagĀ - youāve had four jaeger bombs, three glasses of lambanog,Ā and an entire pitcher of weng-weng. you doubt youāll wake up tomorrow. you donāt care.
Bonus:
4)Ā WasakĀ - ha, the world hates you. you wake up. you have a hangover. and you successfully ruined your life last night by throwing up on your bossās shoes, breaking up with you significant other over something theyāve only done in your dreams, and telling your mother you never loved her. oh, and you jump-started the apocalypse. on top of that, your head hurts.
oh, well. at least youāre not sabog anymore.
thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Favorite German Words
Die Aufbruchsstimmung = literally ādeparture moodā. This can be twofold ā the mood of departure before travel where itās something between antsy, giddy, and nervous and everyone is milling about, just wanting to get on the trip already. Or the atmosphere right before a family gathering or a party ends and breaks up and people start leaving one after the other so itās no longer relaxed or fun to be there.
In a more figurative, poetic or more general ābig pictureā kind of way, it can also be the spirit of optimism. An atmosphere of happy anticipation before moving on from a specific period, era, or event. Like after a war or after selling a house, a breakup, a death, some big life event one is recovering from and trying to move on from, while beginning to be more optimistic.

I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea - dostoevsky
One uncanny aspect of translating is when I am grappling with a sentence that would sound particularly wrong if I tried to preserve any part of the original structure or idioms, because nothing about it matches the way one would phrase such an idea in my language, so what I need to do is mentally divorce the sentence from its syntax and vocabulary, to try and find how my language would give form to the same concepts. It always makes me wonder, what am I working with here? What is left when you remove the grammar and specific word choices from a sentence? I donāt know, a shapeless mental porridge of pure meaning, a nebulous feeling of what another brain has tried to express. I find it amazing that your mind knows just what to do with something so unfathomableāthat itās just like āright, right, give me a minuteā as it distillates meaning out of words like itās nothing then lassoes it down from the platonic realm of forms to give it a completely new shape. What is āmeaningā and how does it exist in your mind in this liminal moment after youāve extracted it from a foreign language but havenāt yet found words in your own language that can embody it? I donāt know.
