I think the issue with this picture is that like the Soviets did a lot of stuff first but the Americans generally did stuff better and more comprehensively which is what allowed them to get someone on the moon first. There were far more failures on the Soviet side

#also the Americans got a successful mission to Venuses atmosphere first
