Antinous, George Barbier
Raghib Al-Isfehani ( Abul-Qasim al-Hussein bin Mufaddal bin Muhammad)
from ʝAjaĚĘźib al-makhluĚqaĚt wa-gharaĚĘźib al-mawjuĚdaĚt (The wonders of creation, or literally, Marvels of things created and miraculous aspects of things existing) by Zakriya ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini (circa 1203-83) is among the best known texts of the Islamic world. It is often referred to as âThe Cosmography.âÂ
The work begins with an introduction, and is followed by two sections, the first on supra-terrestrial, the second on terrestrial creatures. Al-Qazwini concludes his work with a section on monsters and angels. The genre of Aja'ib al-makhluqat (The wonders of creation), of which al-Qazwiniâs work is the most famous example, includes texts in Arabic and Persian that describe the marvels of the heavens and the earth. Numerous manuscripts of al-Qazwiniâs work have survived, as have several Persian and Turkish translations of illustrations.

Works from Ĺukasz StokĹos' exhibition Cries and Whispers
The exhibition is named after Ingmar Bergmanâs 1972 film Cries and Whispers in which two sisters watch over a third in the last agonizing days of her life. Set in the gilded, red-saturated rooms of their family castle, this story of the sistersâ and, in turn, the houseâs indi!erence to su!ering achieves the same dissonance in its adherence to ritual. Stoklosaâs and Bergmanâs scenes share a filmic grandiosity and endeavor to capture within them the horrors of history that objects ignore.
