So for the past idfk 2-3 months I've been talking to @linashirou (sorry for the ping lina it felt right to mention you since its also your au) about a metal gear western/rdr au and I've been thinking about specifically Mantis for obvious reasons but another reason
I feel like he would definitely have more control over his abilities in this western au than the canon universe. Hear me out.
In the canon universe Mantis is relying on his gas mask to control his powers and without it he can and can't control it because he's driven by hate and thoughts and other junk
Now in this western/rdr au, he wouldn't have that. I have it that he grew up as a child coal miner in Annesburg until he was like a teenager so he had to learn to control himself the hard way. And also there wasn't that kind of technology to do that, the mask might be a placebo but still. I do still have him covering his face with a bandana and what not but it's mostly for aesthetic and also his face is fucked up. And because of him having to learn to control himself the hard way, he has better control of himself. He learned the hard way to tune out the sounds of other peoples minds and other stuff. I do imagine that when he's unfocused (like panicking, drunk, or just overwhelmed) he somewhat loses that control. But mostly has control overall on his daily life and tries to avoid getting to the point of losing control because it's not very fun
That's all I really got its 3am as I'm writing this
Feeling so alone...
Doodle of Otacon.
I felt like drawing Otacon at a low angle.
I don’t think I’ve ever posted (or even done) a flat colored drawing before.

Casually dressed Otacon.
Gosh, I’ve been drawing really cartoony lately.
I completely forgot what the cover of Policenauts looks like.
I always forget what his shoes look like too.
I'm so invested in my western au .
Please take a look

fanfic writers deserve better
if we post too fast, we get accused of using ai (no, you don't know how fast someone can write. you don't even know if the "too-frequent-to-be-human updates" you see are something that have long been finished and sitting in an author's drafts for god knows how long. just because it's recently posted, doesn't necessarily always mean it's recently written too. a lot of writers finish the whole thing first before they start posting it chapter by chapter).
if we take "too long to update", we get people pressuring us to "update faster" even though fanfics are our hobbies and we write for ourselves first and foremost.
if our works are grammatically correct, we get accused of using ai (some of us just love correct grammars).
if our works are not grammatically correct, we get insulted/criticized (mind you, not everybody writes in their native language. kudos to writers who write in their second, or third, or fourth language — I'm willing to bet a lot of people who criticize fanfics because of poor grammar can't even speak other languages besides english).
if our paragraphs are "too long and too detailed", we get accused of using ai.
if our paragraphs are "too short", we also get accused of using ai.
if we are autistic and we write in ways some deem "too robotic", we get accused of using ai.
some people just don't use their brains to think "ai was trained on human-made works, it was trained to look human-made. ai writes this way because the way it writes is the way real humans write — real humans whose works it was trained to mimic". instead they somehow disregard this logic and think "hmmm this work looks ai-generated. I will engage in witch hunt, be a bully and harass writers whose works I don't vibe with".

I really love Yoji Shinkawa’s concept sketches for MGS so have a Shinkawa-esque Otacon doodle

I am once again begging people to realize that AI checker doesn’t work. it’s never worked. it’s notoriously known to have flagged human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made. and by feeding it people’s works, you are feeding more works to AI, because apparently the machine itself is AI.
the only thing AI checker does is harm genuine artists and people in general too.
