steve will always be captain america, but that doesn't mean sam can't be a version too
look i hate brave new world, just as i hate all of the newer mcu content. i hate what they did to sam and bucky, and how it continues from what they did to steve in endgame. i hate how the mcu is trying to dismiss the original avengers and replace them instead of having them be a part of encouraging and inspiring new heroes. BUT the issue is not really in sam stepping up to be captain america. i hate what they did and how they did it, but anyone criticizing the movie solely because sam is a black captain america wholeheartedly missed what captain america (AND STEVE) stand for in the first place.
i hate how they mischaracterized sam and tried to make him identical to steve. i hate that they took away his individuality. but sam also being captain america can also be a powerful symbol. steve will always be cap, but sam being another captain america doesn't take away from that. quite frankly, they both can be a version of captain america at the same time, just like the comics did. they both embody the values of captain america in different ways and it would have been really cool to see them work together in that way, instead of fans and the studio trying to put them against each other.
the manner in which it was done in endgame was atrocious. it could have been cool to see steve still be a part of the avengers, but take a step back and offer sam the mantle too. it is a powerful symbol for people not only to see a captain america, but sam as a captain america, and remind people what that mantle is supposed to stand for, and it would have been cool to see sam get his own focus AND see them side by side. it would have been amazing to see sam combine falcon and captain america, and to see how he is different from steve, rather than them just trying to shove them in the same mold.
