“Aren’t you two a bit old for trick or treating?”
What…? The clanging of TFC’s pickaxe halted, hovering above the chipped rock as he listened carefully.
Another two knocks. “Trick or treat!”
“How in the hell…?” He whispered to himself, dusting the coal off of his pants and rising, knees cracking as he did so. He winced, making his way toward the door of the vault and swinging it open.
“Now what are you kids doing down h-“ TFC stopped, moving his gaze from the trick or treaters’ chests to their eyes, which were far above him. He squinted up at them.
A woman with bouncy brown hair in a cow costume, smiling brightly, and a bearded man wearing a casual blue jacket and donning a robotic eye.
“What-“ TFC sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “First of all, how did you even get down here.”
“Innovation, sir,” the woman chirped, bright-eyed, cheery grin unwavering.
“Right,” he huffed, “And secondly, aren’t you two a little old for trick or treating?”
The man spoke up, chuckling. “Never too old to have fun!”
“Hm.” TFC said, a smile gracing his features. “I suppose you’re right. Never too old to have fun. I wasn’t prepared, but give me a moment.”
He closed the door halfway, quickly grabbing some candy from what he called his “secret box”, shutting it tightly and swiftly making his way back to the vault’s entrance.
“Sorry about that,” he said gruffly, and dumped some of the brightly wrapped candy into each of their bags, them smiling widely and thanking him politely. He smiled back at them, nodding.
“Have a good night,” he said, closing the vault door, and pressing his ear against it to listen.
A crack sounded throughout the hallway from the other side of the door.
“Augh!” The man yelled out in pain, “It’s solid rock!”
TFC’s featured shifted into an expression of mirth, cracking up with heaving shoulders and wheezy laughs.
“Never too old to have fun!” He called out to them, dissolving into laughter again.
