As someone returning from a long time away, i decided to start a new character instead of picking up where I left off on my highest level character (who is currently in zafaria). And it's super unnerving, it feels like I'm going crazy. Second guessing myself throughout the whole wiz city quest lines, wondering which one is changed and wasn't. I'm currently in Krok, and I can see that they gave it a facelift but I'm just sitting here wondering if they touched the krok quests too. Makes me want to rush through all the worlds to at least experience the quests as they were intended before they poison those too 😭😭

Dear video essay creators. A video analysis is when you analyze a piece of media. No no look at me. A summary, no matter how thorough, is not an analysis. An analysis requires you to draw conclusions about the media such as authorial intent, real-world parallels, discussion about themes/worldbuilding/character motivation, and so much more. You have to stop summarizing something and saying that’s analysis. The Gaylors are doing more critical analysis than you. Is that who you want to lose to? The gaylors?

Hi hello my friend I keep seeing your spiral fanfic posts and I've finally decided to take the plunge into more AO3

Two questions for you!

1. I just started combing through Novus videos so I only know the full lore up through Lemuria, are there any works of yours that I should wait on to avoid spoilers? (I don't necessarily care deeply about spoilers but I'm just curious)

2. Is there a particular order (chronological lore or your personal preference) I should read your stuff in? If not, do you have a recommendation of maybe where to start if I'm new here?

Hopefully I'm doing this right, I'm still dipping my toe into fanfic for the first time 😅

I’m assuming you’re reading Ignis Fatuus in Regno Magiae and not Caccia Alle Stelle.

So the thing with Foolish Fire is that I skip the majority of arc 4. There is one fic that takes place at the start of Karamelle but it’s barely about Karamelle it’s about the Wizard finding a puppy in a trash can. A lot of where Arc 4 would be is sort of padded out by some noncanon stuff. The fics are listed in chronological order so anything listed after A Deal is when you’ll wanna stop if you don’t want spoilers for Selenopolis and Darkmoor.

The series is TECHNICALLY multiple oneshots so even though it’s listed in chronological order you’re gonna be jumping around a lot. Like, uh, arc 1 consists of early Wizard City, there is one scene in Marleybone and then a fic in Dragonspyre. I wasn’t really intending a coherent continuity but then I wrote so much it ended up that way. You’ll probably have to do a bit of inferring/guessing what happened in between stuff.

I try to stay mostly canon compliant but there’s a ripple effect where because I write the young Wizard as a full character rather than an insert, they tend to make more explicit choices and that changes how other people behave in turn. So if something occasionally goes differently you’re not misremembering canon, someone probably made a different choice or a mistake they otherwise didn’t.

The fics are of… varying quality because I was either experimenting or just fucking around to cool down from writing my psychological thriller novel, but if I had to recommend…

Prologus is probably a good start if you want a baseline for this particular young Wizard’s character and starting point (though their personality flips by arc 3)

Fatum Surculi is the tutorial adapted but it’s heavily emotional/headcanon dense

Once Unto Grief just got a HEAVY overhaul and it’s an adaptation of the Shadow magic ritual from Khrysalis

I consider Tamen Credo and Shroud a two-parter but it’s awesome if you like emotional agony

Madness, Properly is TECHNICALLY post Darkmoor but it barely has anything to do with Darkmoor and it is my favorite in terms of sheer comedy factor

genuinely one of my favourite details about Bram Stokers Dracula that isn't really transferred to the pop culture is that vampires have irridescent eyes, they appear brown at a glance, however when light is reflected on them they seem to go red!

another thing that pop culture latched onto is this idea that you might use a wreath of garlic bulbs to ward off a vampire, however, in the book there is a popular use of garlic blossoms rather than the bulbs. i think these are a lot prettier and way more versatile for stylisation! you could have a garlic flower crown.

also like the cowboy part can we please stop omitting the fact that there is a real ass cowboy in Bram Stokers Dracula and hes from real ass Texas and he has a fucking gun and he tries to fucking shoot Dracula

Sorry I wanted to reblog with your tags. I think the thing is, I don't have many true like, dealbreakers or things that will turn me away from a story. I really don't make a distinction of "good writing choice" vs "bad writing choice", nearly any choice taken can serve a purpose and my critiques come from my personal opinion on if those choices serve the narrative or not, if I think the way the story is going is thematically consistent, all of that. So the one thing I cannot stand, the ONE choice a story could make that upsets me, is when it betrays its own themes, undercuts itself, and worse, MOCKS ME FOR CARING. And that's the thing about the FTUE storyline. It mocks me for caring! It feels like a parody of the original story, both trying to bait me with nostalgia and in the same breath making fun of me for ever thinking it was that serious. And that's the thing, I feel like the FTUE was trying to be funny because they felt like they couldn't onboard new players with 2008 sincerity. Times had "changed" and they needed to prove they were "in on the joke" about how silly their setting was. The people who would feel welcomed by the irony aren't players who will stay for the long run, because a story inevitably asks you to care. Trying to be "in on the joke" so people don't get bored won't help you.

You hit the nail on the head!! The first time I encountered FTUE, it felt so... idk, shallow? The conflicts aren't portrayed with the same weight as they used to. But the story is what got me invested to begin with, and now it feels like everything has to have a punch line.

It's not like pre-ftue didn't have its own sense of humor, either. That was part of what I liked about it when I was younger. I'd have a little ~sensible chuckle~ about quest names or whatever and then keep enjoying myself. But the joke isn't the joke anymore; the joke is that anyone who would take this silly little plot seriously is cringe! Isn't that so funny? (<- heavy heavy heavy on the sarcasm)

It's just so weird to introduce your game in a tone that expects and encourages players to not actually care about it, but also... expect that to somehow make them want to care about it enough to keep playing? It's giving "netflix wants to make movies for people who aren't actually watching the movies." Why is a business trying to cater to people who don't actually like their product? Like yeah, ok, let's make wizard game, except the intro has to be for people who don't like wizard game. That's a totally good and financially lucrative decision. Stonks.

And then they usually drop off after Unicorn Way because it’s “weird” or “slow”

It’s so awkward too cause like. You get introduced to the ACTUAL cadence/tone/style of arc 1 in KROK. And I love krok! But it’s whiplash because while arc 1 is still fairly absurd (it’s wiz) it’s a lot more subdued and… blunt? Than the FTUE? Arc 1 had this very blunt, striaghtforward writing style where weird stuff happened but it wasn’t framed as a JOKE. It’s just framed as How Things Are Happening.

Meanwhile, FTUE…

i genuinely think I ruined my friend's experience of the game by complaining about how bad FTUE was. Bro finished Unicorn Way and said "that's enough.."

For a lot of it, I was repeating word for word what the original script was for the game and why FTUE sucked so bad in its changes.

Okay well. Yeah that’ll do it. You know maybe introducing our friends to our favorite game with “HEY THIS IS MY FAVORITE GAME, THE INTRO SUCKS.” Is… not a great onboarding strategy to share something we love? We here on Wizblur complain a lot about things because we all have been here for what I assume is years. But that complaining is familiar and there’s a mutual understanding it comes from a place of affection and a bit of “oh, you!” About things. A new player doesn’t have that context that a lot of complaining is more or less ribbing or groaning about how the door squeaks. The things we complain about are things we want done better or are structural problems that are there but not deal breakers.

But at the same time. Yes I think we should communicate that the original intro was better and that the FTUE is not a good representation of the game and its sincerity or worldbuilding skills.

Man finding that balance would be great if I wasn’t autistic—
