Hello past me

It’s funny the warm nostalgia you get from the simplest of things. I was simply deleting years and years’ worth of emails, some of these emails dating back to the days of high school almost ten years ago, when I stumbled upon old emails between old friends I haven’t seen since those last few days. These emails I read though were just a couple of kids asking each other to read stories we had just started writing, that for the most part have now since been deleted from history, but these stories held our young hopes and dreams within the words we had written. Do I look back and feel regret for not haven become an author like I so deeply wished for? No, because unlike my adolescent self I know I still have time. Plus, I have created a new reality that, that eighteen-year-old girl didn’t believe she had the capacity nor capability of achieving. Looking back at these emails helped me remember that young girl, to which I will always have a warm place in my heart for and all of the dreams she wanted to achieve. Even still she would look at me and smile though, because even as I have not quite accomplished what she deemed would be her success story I know she would look at me and think ‘wow’ I can’t wait to be you.

And she responded “my mother’s a feminist also a gender and sexuality studies professor. She’s fine with my shorts”

Just to give a little more perspective after reading the story:

The sequence of events is a little jumbled in the telling above. The actual chastising from the teacher came days before the woman’s thesis, during a practice run of her presentation. This was not a spur-of-the-moment thing where she just whipped off her clothes for the sake of being angry. Chai took the time to think things through before deciding this was the way she wanted to protest. She used critical thinking and level-headedness to decide instead of becoming volatile and aggressive, she would choose non-violent protest.

I just don’t like the way the story’s being told by others because it makes her come across as “overly-emotional” and “erratic” (as women often do in the media, because it’s easier to attribute extreme action to “hysteria”), whereas in actual news reports, she had time to think about her decision and choose the best way to handle what happened to her.
