Everyone on reddit is being a doomer about this winter in Texas and once a week there's a prepper thread for when the grid fails again-- it's all very straightforward, no-nonsense stuff about generators, carbon monoxide poisoning, food preservation etc, except this one guide I was reading had a single aside: "Candles don't give off much heat but they do offer hope". It's such a funny thing to say in the middle of a straightforward 'tips and tricks for the end of the world' thread, but I can't stop thinking about it. It's hilarious to think of itemizing 'hope' for your bug-out bag but honestly? 'This doesn't give off heat but it does offer hope' is a useful framework. Let's not load up on candles, but make room for one or two in your fallout shelter. Man does not live on MREs alone.
