Okay my loves - can I just talk about how much I love this piece of art drawn by @lexplexdraws for my fic for the @steddiebang? It's the perfect moment because it's directly out of the movie (with a Steddie twist) and how often do you get to see a drawing of a man wearing loafers and a cardigan carrying a fucking seeded watermelon? I mean - there are probably kids on this app who are thinking...."why isn't that watermelon round?" Like - they've never seen a real watermelon before. How crazy is that shit?
Anyway go give Lexi some love because she deserves it! She made me five art pieces - FIVE! I'm so excited for you guys to see them embedded in the fic itself because she did such a great job of matching her work to my scenes and they're gorgeous! Chapter two will be out today!

Pulling up to the resort feels like walking the plank for Steve. A summer holiday of the worst kind. Forced games, stuffy rooms filled with people just like his parents. People wearing the mask of the social elite. Fake people with no intention of leaving the world a better place. That wasnât for him. It used to be. Oh, how it used to be. King Steve theyâd called him at school. His followers, his haters, his friends. And heâd reveled in it. In the worship, the power, the glory of being someone everyone wanted to be even while they hated him.Â
But then heâd fallen for Nancy Wheeler. And sheâd come with a whole bushel of brats. Steve had discovered something he loved more than adoration, he loved being someone the kids could count on. Even after he and Nancy had broken up, the kids had still come to him for help, for protection, for friendship. There was something incredible about that.Â
So when the time had come to decide what to do with his life, Steve decided to become a school counselor. He wanted to help people. His parents were rich, his mom helped people with her charities. Sure, she did it for the stature, it was like a competition among the old money housewives - who could earn the most money for the poorest people with the most extravagant dinner or event. He could have done that, too. But he didnât want to spend $20,000 on a charity event that raised $15,000. That didnât add up. He wanted to help in real ways that had nothing to do with social status.Â
But heâd promised his dad that heâd do this one last family trip before moving to his apartment near the school he was starting his job at in the fall. One last parade around the room for the youngest Harrington. His sister Carol loved to be paraded around so he wasnât sure why his dad even cared. Carol lived for being shown off like a prized heifer at a fair. Salivated for it.Â
Theyâd been close when Carol was in school. Using their reign to crush people like bugs. But since Steve had given it all up, Carol seemed a little disgusted by him. It didnât help that people only fawned over Carol because of their parents and their money. She was really quite ordinary in every other way. No matter how much she tried to stand out in a crowd, she just didnât. And she hated that Steve did. It wasnât his fault. He didnât even want that. He hated the attention these days.Â
It probably didnât help that Carol was always just Carol . But Steve was Baby . It started when they were toddlers. She was the oldest and he was Baby Harrington. And he was such a pretty baby. And then a pretty boy. And by that time, the name had stuck. Baby.Â
He couldnât wait to not hear anyone call him that anymore.Â
The Cadillac glides into the concierge loop. Before his dad even slides it into park, there are already several bellboys circling the car to open doors and stand near the trunk for luggage retrieval. Moving quickly, Steve pushes open his own door before a bellboy - oh, girl actually - can get there, he smiles in apology when she looks annoyed.
âRichard!â A voice booms out. The owner of the voice and apparently the resort as well, is not a big man. Not in height at least. Heâs round and ruddy cheeked, dressed in what can only be a linen suit. He had to have been waiting for them to arrive, thereâs no way he greets all of his guests this way. Especially not with his meek looking wife at his elbow.Â
The bellboy - bellgirl? - followed Steve around the car and is standing at the manâs other elbow expectantly. The man ignores her though, and she catches Steveâs eye with a raised eyebrow.Â
âMax Hagan,â his dad actually smiles, clasping hands in a familiar way. âSusan,â he kisses the womanâs cheek and she titters like she canât believe Dr. Harringtonâs charm. âYou remember my wife, Amelia,â his mom allows Mr. Hagan to kiss her cheek and then she gives Susan a light hug. âAnd these are our children,â Like either of them are children anymore. Theyâre twenty-four and twenty-two now. âThis is Carol, sheâs been so involved in Ameliaâs charity work this year,â Carol gives them a little finger wave, fake smile plastered on just right, âAnd this is our youngestââ donât say it â-Baby. Heâs just graduated college and is headed off to locations unknown to help the poor.â
The bellgirl looks like she canât decide whether to sneer or laugh.
Smiling tightly, Steve shakes both of their hands, âItâs Steve, please. And itâs Chicago and theyâre less fortunate schoolchildren, Dad. Itâs not like their families chose to be poor. Thereâs enough resources for everyone if we just share the wealth.â
The girl tilts her head, considering him.
Mr. Hagan grins, âOhhhh a social warrior! We feel the same, we employ a lot of the areas less fortunate, even provide housing so they can stay here for the summer.â The bellgirl rolls her eyes and clears her throat, âOh, yes, Robin. There you are.â Like she hasnât been standing there the entire time. âYour keys, Richard?â His dad hands them to Robin and she nods, heading off to park his car for their stay probably.
Steve turns to watch her go and she winks at him. He barely bites back a laugh. The audacity. Heâll have to find a way to talk to her without the rest of these people around.Â
Clapping his hands, Mr. Hagan waves them all toward the big sprawling Connecticut mansion behind him, âCome, come, let me show you the main houses before the staff takes you out to your cabana.â
The central house is the kind of vacation opulence Steveâs come to expect from his parentâs rich friends. Several sitting rooms show off spindly antique furniture and bookcases filled with books. There are tall windows open to the breeze and almost no one inside. This is clearly the Haganâs house and only those invited are allowed in the sitting rooms.
To prove that theory correct, a guy about his and Carolâs age jogs down the stairs in the main hall and strides right over to them. He gives Carol an appraising look but his gaze lingers much longer on Steve. âUncle Max, who are our guests?â
âOh Tommy, perfect timing! These are the Harringtons. This is Richard and his wife Amelia.â Tommy shakes both of their hands, calling them sir and maâam then he turns to Carol, kisses her hand as she giggles and pretends to be shy - sheâs not.
âThatâs their oldest, Carol and this isââ donât say it, âBaby, their youngest. Heâs headed off to save the world after his stay with us.â Itâs so patronizing that Steve would bristle if he thought it would make any difference. It wonât.Â
Tommy takes Steveâs hand in his own clammy one, leering where no one else can see his expression and gives Steveâs hand a firm squeeze. Gross.
Pulling his hand back and stuffing it into the back pocket of his jeans, Steve corrects with, âIâd rather be called Steve, please.â
âOf course.â Tommy agrees but itâs obvious he has no intention of doing so.
In the second house, a short walk from the first, thereâs a ballroom currently filled with preset tables with cloth napkins and several types of wine glasses. Thereâs a neat row of forks to the right of the preset gold rimmed plates. Despite the summer heat, all of the employees setting the tables are wearing a smart white tuxedo jacket and white gloves. Like they shouldnât dare to touch the rich with their bare hands.Â
Steve wants to gag.
There must be a large kitchen attached but Max Hagan doesnât show them that. Before they leave, a busboy drops a water glass, the shatter is loud enough to catch all of their attention. He looks at Mr. Hagan in horror. Mr. Hagan smiles tightly, apologizes to them and nods to Tommy who excuses himself from the group with a cruel smile and heads over to the employee. Probably threatening to take the cost of the glass out of the kidâs check. What an asshole.
Steveâs already over it.
They donât walk out to the other buildings, Mr. Haganâs cheeks are already red and heâs puffing. He clearly doesnât walk his grounds very often. Instead, he points to a large covered area, telling them that they do activities like arts & crafts, dancing and card games there and at another building nearby. When he shows them the pools, Steve almost asks why they donât swim in the lake thatâs right there but Tommy has rejoined them and he really doesnât want to engage in conversation if he can avoid it.
On their way back around, Steve catches sight of what must be the trail to the employee housing hidden away, tucked into a far corner and makes a plan to go check it out as soon as he can escape. See if the Haganâs are actually taking care of their employees.
Pretty soon, theyâre whisked away on golf carts to their private cabana which is more like an entire cabin at the waterâs edge. Their luggage is already in their rooms and unpacked, which he hates. Making someone else unpack your underwear is such a power move and heâs never been a fan. He makes a mental note to make his bed every morning and keep his side of the room heâs sharing with Carol as clean as possible.
*
Dinner is, of course, formal and boring. Theyâre sharing a table with the Hagans. Tommy tells them all about his time at Yale where heâd majored in business management like his dad and uncle. Took his time so he hadnât graduated until this year at twenty-four. Heâd really loved spending time bonding with his fraternity brothers and âenjoying college life.â Which Steve takes to mean partying and convincing drunk freshmen to have sex with him like a creep. Heâs spending this summer helping his uncle out to gain experience with managing people and, besides, âitâll look great on his resume for internships.â
Steve barely contains his many eye rolls before he finally tunes it out.
At one point, Steve tunes back in to find their waiter talking to his dad about good family values and how heâs working at the resort this summer to pay his own expenses during college. He doesnât want to be a drain on his family and is on a scholarship for basketball - also to Yale, he and Tommy are frat brothers apparently - but that heâs trying to get into law school next year. Steveâs dad introduces the guy - Jason - to both Carol and Steve, claps him on the back like heâs proud of this stranger and then tells the kid to talk to some professor whoâs an old frat buddy of his. Theyâll âtake care of him.â
The guy practically creams his pants to grovel at his dadâs feet. Itâs so disgusting, Steve canât even watch as the new guy realizes Steveâs not interested and begins to lay on the charm with Carol whoâs lapping it up as per usual.
He spends the rest of dinner watching the waitstaff and hoping to see Robin again. He does, eventually. Sheâs clearing a table when he and his family are on their way out. Just as they reach her table, she fumbles a glass and Steve grabs it in midair.Â
âOhmygodthankyou.â She starts to babble, rushing the words out so quickly it feels like there arenât even individual words. âIâm such a klutz. Thatâs why Iâm not a waiter, I drop things too often. Usually I donât do this either but weâre short staffed tonight. You didnât need to know all of this, anyway, thank you.â She plucks the glass from his outstretched hand and puts it in the bin.
âItâs no problem. Glad I was here at the right time.â Steve smiles, wishing he could hang out with her but knowing sheâs probably got better things to do with her little spare time than hang out with some rich kid. He nods instead, following his parents out.
*
âDid you need the blue paint, Mrs. Schumacher?â The little blond with the high ponytail asks a little loudly, her eyes sparkle when she looks at Steve because Mrs. Schumacher was originally painting a sunrise that has somehow become an underwater scene. Theyâve both been sharing looks since the old woman started adding fish to her skyline.
âNo, I donât need any help.â She says crankily, slapping paint on her canvas hard enough to splatter it onto the table cloth. Luckily itâs all water colors so itâll come out. Steve stifles a laugh.Â
Robin is there, too. She seems to be less of an artist and more of a wrangler though. Sheâs the one who brought the Schumachers over to begin with. Putting the wife in front of Steve and the husband next to him. At first he thought she was punishing him for something but then the little blond Chrissy took up the spot next to Mrs. S and Robin took up the spot on the other side of the mister and he realized sheâd done it so he was close enough to talk to.
âSo Steve,â Chrissy starts, inconspicuously sliding the blue paint toward Mrs. S, âwhat kind of things do you do for fun?â
Ducking his head to hide his absolute joy that Robin had obviously heard his hatred of the name Baby and introduced him as Steve to Chrissy, Steve shrugs, âFor fun? Not much, honestly. I gave up the social butterfly life and I spend a lot of my spare time babysitting a bunch of kids too old to need a babysitter anymore.â
âAwww, that sounds nice!â She says warmly, handing Mrs. S. a clean canvas and removing the ocean of paint sheâd been working on.
Next to him, Mr. S. has fallen asleep in his chair. Robin leans around him and hands Steve a piece of paper with a few penciled lines. It looks like a tally board. At the top it says âYou suck/You Ruleâ and there is one tally in the âYou Suckâ spot and three in the âYou Rule.â
He laughs loud enough that Mr. S. flinches but doesnât wake up. âWhatâs the You Suck tally for?â
âBeing a rich kid, obviously.â Robin grins.
âI canât really help that.â He says, âAnd the others?â
âYou want to help people, you helped me last night and you like kids.â Robin ticks them off on her fingers, âBut I really feel like thatâs probably as good as youâre gonna get so now Iâm looking for more evidence of you sucking.â
âRobinâ Chrissy chastises her, reaching across to playfully slap Robinâs hand where sheâs flapping it around.Â
Steve laughs though, itâs the first time heâs enjoyed himself at this place so heâs all in.
After a little while, Chrissy puts a record on the player and tells them itâs time for dance lessons if anyoneâs interested. Steveâs not necessarily a bad dancer, but heâs not a great dancer either. Dancing requires a level of letting yourself go that Steve just hasnât achieved yet. Chrissy is a wonderful dancer, though. Sheâs leading Mr. Schumacher around, which is really adorable.
âSheâs gorgeous isnât she?â Robin says when she flops down in the chair next to him.
âYes. And kind. Not my type, though, if youâre trying to set me up.â Steve looks at Robin whoâs steadfastly not looking at him.
âDonât look at me Harrington, Iâm not your type either. Well - youâre not mine at least.â Robin scoffs, crossing her arms.
âYou sure? Have you seen how great my hair looks?â He says, scandalized, âAnd this face? This face is everyoneâs type.âÂ
She groans, knows heâs giving her shit, shoves his shoulder away, âI barely know you and I already think youâre the worst.â
Steve cackles.
*
Dinner is another stuffy affair of everyone patting themselves on the back for being rich and self important. But tonight it leads into music and dancing. Right away, Tommy asks Steve to dance and Steve just knows his parents are going to give him that look if he doesnât so he says yes. Itâs stiff and awkward and Tommyâs trying to lead even though heâs a good three inches shorter than Steve.
Chrissyâs Tinkerbell sounding laugh catches his attention and Steve looks toward the middle of the dance floor to see her in a gorgeous pink dress with layers and layers of some kind of gauzy material. Her dance partner is in a black tuxedo, hair pulled into a neat bun at the back of his head.Â
When he dips Chrissy back, her head looks like it might touch the backs of her knees and then he yanks her up, spinning her out and back in so fast she looks like sheâs a yo-yo. Her dress swirls around her thighs and she grins up at him. Sheâs a tiny thing but in her heels, sheâs shoulder height to him. They swish and spin, looking gorgeous together. The crowd gives them ample room. Steve stops moving to watch them with a soft smile and Tommy stiffens where heâs trying to get Steveâs attention.
âThey know better!â Tommy growls, looking like heâs going over to stop the pair from their dance.Â
Steve stops him with a touch to his forearm, squeezing gently to placate Tommy, âNo, let them keep going. Look how much everyone loves watching them.â He moves back into Tommyâs arms, a little closer this time even though it makes his skin crawl.
Smiling, Tommy says, âOkay, just for this one dance though.â
After the dance, Chrissy and her partner split up without Tommy interfering and find guests to bring out to dance with them instead. Steve dances again with Tommy and then bows out to sit back down at their table, claiming a headache.
Itâs a close call, getting away from Tommyâs demands and Carolâs disdain after a sufficient amount of time has passed but Steve really wants to walk the grounds alone so he sneaks away. Heâs been wandering long enough that the sun is completely down when he comes to the bridge over the little creek that separates the main resort from the employee cabins and he spots Robin. Sheâs carrying three huge watermelons and sheâs the most awkward looking thing heâs ever known so sheâs about five seconds away from dropping them.
Rushing over, he catches the middle one just before it drops.
âAlright, fine, thatâs another tally in the You Rule column.â She says testily. He grins. âDonât get cocky though. Come on.â
He follows, thinks about taking a second watermelon but heâs afraid she wonât be able to balance with just one. She really is just so awkward.Â
As they approach the building set far into the corner, Steve can hear bass thumping, he can hear laughter and raucous shouts and occasionally he passes couples making out or smoking cigarettes together. Inside is even louder. Itâs dingy and dim, the music is loose and carefree and instead of a nice cha cha or a waltz like heâd heard earlier, everyone is grinding and rubbing against each other.
Itâs soâŚÂ dirty but Steve canât look away. He knows his eyes are like saucers, taking in everyone in their short skirts and tight pants, their bare arms and low cuts. Steve feels very out of place in his pressed khakis and his cardigan. Thank god heâd refused to wear the tie his father had waved at him.
Robin shouts over her shoulder, âCome on, this way.â
But Steve canât. Heâs frozen in place. There in the middle of the dancers is Chrissy in a low cut tank top that hugs her chest and stops just short of the waistline of a skirt barely long enough to cover her butt as she drapes her knee around the hip of her partner.
And her partner. Wow. Heâs not like he was inside with the guests at all.
He canât be much taller than Steve but heâs got so much presence. His hair is down now, wild and past his shoulders. His shoulders are bare in the black tank top heâs sporting. Itâs low cut on both sides and the front. Steve sees a flash of his nipple as he spins Chrissy. They grind their hips together and Steveâs eyes are drawn down to the manâs insanely tight pants. Black with ripped knees. He makes eye contact with Steve, sneers, spins Chrissy and brings her back flush against his chest, grinding and staring at Steve over her shoulder.
Steve, whoâs standing in the middle of a sea of dancers, holding a fucking watermelon. Heâs wearing loafers for Christ sake.
The song ends and Chrissy catches sight of Steve, she drags her partner over just as Robin comes back, taking the watermelon from Steve.
âWhatâs he doing here?â The man asks rudely, nodding his chin at Steve but looking at Robin.
âHeâs cool. He helped me carry a watermelon.â Robin chirps, heading toward the tables of food.
The guy looks at Steve again, heâs got a toothpick in the corner of his mouth and he chews on it, rolling it from one side to the other. Heâs like, insanely sexy.
âI carried a watermelon.â Steve repeats, dumbly. The man raises his eyebrow and Chrissy snorts a laugh behind her hand.
âSteve, this is Eddie, my dance partner. Eddie, this is Steve. Heâs a guest but heâs a nice one.â Chrissy tugs on Eddieâs hand but not to leave, just to signal to him maybe? A reminder to be nice and not eat the guests.
Steve ups the anti on just how stupid he can look but finger waving. Eddie huffs out a scoff and turns away, tugging Chrissy with him back to the dance floor.
Steve mouths, âI carried a watermelon?â at their backs, slapping himself in the forehead as he follows where Robin had gone.
He finds her at the table, not cutting the watermelon. Thereâs a guy there loudly reminding her sheâs not allowed near the knives and she says, âyeah yeah yeah, shut it.â Before turning to Steve, âHey Dingus, I added two more tallies for you. One in the You Rule column for helping me with my melons.â She leers and he balks. âAnd the other in the You Suck column for drooling over Eddie. Gross.â
âI was not!â He hisses even though he totally was. Whatever.
He turns back to watch the crowd. Itâs not like people donât dance like this. Itâs the 80s not the 60s, but heâs never seen it this up close and personal. Itâs like everyoneâs fucking with their clothes on. Itâs kinda hot. Okay, itâs a lot hot.
Itâs completely unintentional but Steve is watching as Chrissy pulls away from Eddie, kisses him on the cheek and waves as she runs out the door. He can hear her bright happy giggle as she goes. When Steve turns back to look at the crowd, Eddieâs staring at him. Contemplating.
When he moves toward Steve, itâs liquid, like a panther. The crowd subconsciously parts for him so he never needs to pause his stride or adjust it. Steveâs still pinned in place when Eddie stops in front of him, throws the toothpick to the ground and takes Steveâs hand. He turns just as fluidly and leads Steve to the middle of the dancers.
It doesnât even occur to Steve that he can protest.
When Eddie turns back to him, Steve swallows a few times, âIâŚI donât know how to dance like this.â He looks at the couples gyrating all around him and then back at Eddie, aware that his eyes are wide and terrified.
Eddieâs cheek lifts up as he smiles with one side of his mouth and leans in to whisper in Steveâs ear, âIâll show you how. Itâs easy.â
Steve shudders and is mortified because he knows Eddie felt it but Eddie doesnât mention it, just slides his hands over Steveâs hips as Steve starts to shift side to side.
âLess like a doll that only bends at the waist and more of a roll. Like, roll up from your hips and out of your chest.â Steve tries it but he feels stiff. Eddie does the roll and looks absolutely sinful doing it. His hips do this push up thing and Steveâs brain makes a blip noise and then shuts off. âLike a puppet, but the only string is here.â One of his hands skates across Steveâs flat belly, the thumb tapping just above his belly button before it resumes itâs place on his hip.
Luckily theyâre not pressed together when it happens because Steveâs dick twitches in his pants and he swallows a whimper. He has to blink and shake himself to regain his composure.
Eddie does it again, the roll, keeping his eyes on Steve as Steve tries and fails to mimic him. âYou gotta relax, baby.âÂ
Ugh. Baby. He wants to insist that Eddie call him Steve but he doesnât want to break up whatever this dance lesson is. One of Eddieâs hands moves from Steveâs hip to his lower back, bringing him closer so his hips are flush with Eddieâs and he feels it when Eddie rolls into him.
A strangled sound escapes Steveâs lips and he hopes to all hell that it's too loud in here for Eddie to have heard that. His arms sort of dangle uselessly and he looks around to see what everyone else is doing with theirs. Oh. Resting them on their partner. Okay. He can do that.
He brings one hand up to rest on Eddieâs shoulder, itâs sweaty where their skin comes in contact. Instead of finding that gross, Steve is finding it pretty fucking hot. His other hand finds purchase on the arm wrapped around Steveâs back still. Eddieâs bare bicep filling Steveâs palm. Everything feels looser now, his hips are rolling and his chest isnât so tight so he can breathe.
Eddie dances two songs with Steve like that and by the end, heâs feeling loose and sexy. When the second song ends, everyone jumps around, cheering. Steve turns back to Eddie but heâs gone. Turning in circles, Steve just barely catches sight of Eddie leaving before Robin is there to pluck Steve off the dance floor.
âDonât take it personally. Eddie loves that people think heâs scary and mysterious.â She rolls her eyes to convey what she thinks of that. âCome have some of this watermelon that you carried, itâs really good!â
It is actually a very good watermelon. Steve takes a slice with him to eat on his way back to his cabana. Itâs a long walk but itâs nice outside and the crickets and frogs are chirping and croaking in the soft breeze.
When he sneaks into his room with Carol, sheâs awake, demanding to know where heâs been.Â
âI covered for you like old times so you owe me.â She informs him. They used to cover for each other without keeping track of what was owed. Guess theyâre not on that level anymore.
He sighs, grabbing his pajama pants and going into their ensuite bathroom but not bothering to close the door. She canât see him from her angle. âI just took a walk. This place is really pretty at night. You should check it out.â He brushes his teeth and closes the door long enough to take a piss.Â
When he comes back out, sheâs rolled to face his bed, âWhat do you think about Tommy - or that guy Jason? Dad really liked them both. And theyâre both hot in different ways.â
âI donât think anything about either of them but if you want them, you should go for them.â
âWhat happened to the time when you had good taste in boys?â She flops onto her back on her twin bed.
He snorts, âI think your good taste and my good taste stopped being the same awhile ago.â He misses the time when they were friends but he doesnât miss her being jealous of guys he didnât like who liked him, âAnd besides, this way, weâll never like the same guys again.â
âThatâs true.â She contemplates. âNow stop talking, I need my beauty sleep.â She pulls her eyemask down and ignores him.
Which is fine by him. Carolâs always been kind of a viper. Heâs glad theyâre not fighting over boys anymore, thatâs for sure.
*
Itâs another day of activities. Steve plays bridge with an entire table of people old enough to be his grandparents. It earns him another tally in the You Rule column though so thatâs something.Â
After art and âdanceâ lessons where Steve spends more time teasing Robin than anything else, Steve takes his towel and goes to the pool. He swims laps until heâs worn out and then takes a long nap before dinner. Dinner is much the same and itâs not a dance night in the main hall so theyâre done early. When Tommy asks if âBabyâ would like to go for a walk, Richard Harrington claps him on the shoulder and says, âOf course, he would, son. You boys have a nice evening.â
And Steve is stuck because heâs got no excuse not to and it would be rude to say no after his father accepted it. He doesnât groan out loud but internally itâs almost a scream.
Tommy takes him on a tour, like he hasnât already seen the grounds. A lot of his commentary is so fucking elitist and classist that Steve canât even figure out what to respond. He doesnât need to though because Tommy barely notices his lack of participation. Heâs way too busy listening to himself talk.
The dining hall looks dark as they head back toward it and Tommy says, âHey, do you want ice cream?â
Actually.
âSure, why not?â Sneaking into the kitchen after close to steal ice cream sounds like something Tommy thinks is his richboy given right but it also sounds kind of fun.
They donât bother to turn the lights on, Tommy opens the freezer and peers in, illuminating them both and the first few feet of floor beyond.
Thereâs a sniffle and Steve turns to see Chrissy curled up in the corner, trying to stay quiet, she shakes her head frantically and Steve puts his arm around Tommyâs shoulders pulling him away from turning to see Chrissy. âYou know what, actually, ice cream sounds like a little much. Dinner was so good and Iâm still full. Walk me home?â
âSure, Baby.â Tommy smiles and itâs so smarmy that Steve almost gags. He looks over Tommyâs shoulder as he closes the fridge and mouths, âstay.â Then he takes Tommyâs hand and leads him back out into the night.
After getting rid of Tommy, Steve races to the dance gazebo where they play music and couples waltz in the warm night air. He knows Robin is working the music because she complained about it earlier. There she is, standing by the record player, grumbling about music choices when Steve skids to a stop in front of her, breathing heavily, âItâs Chrissy.â
Suddenly Eddie is there, somehow still dangerous in a white tuxedo jacket. He grabs Steveâs arm, pulling him away from the gazebo as Robin taps another employee and hands them a stack of records, âWhat do mean? Where is she?â
âHey, let go, I didnât hurt her!â Steve yanks his arm out of Eddieâs grip, rubbing it. For a moment, Eddie looks like he might apologize but he sets his jaw and glares at Steve. âI just saw her. Sheâs in the kitchen, crying.âÂ
Eddie spins on his heel, storming off to the kitchen with Robin and Steve following closely.
âDamn it Chrissy. I told her. I told her,â Eddie grumbles as he stomps angrily across the grounds, his hair is starting to come loose from its bun, tendrils of curls falling down and bouncing wildly in his agitation.
âWhat? Whatâs wrong with her?â Steve asks no one in particular.
Robin is one of those people who babbles when sheâs nervous though and she immediately spills her guts, âSheâs knocked up.â
Eddie spins around and stares at Robin with his jaw hanging open, âRobin, what the fuck?â
âOh shit. Oh shit!â She stammers, flapping her hands around, âDonât tell anyone Steve!â
âIâm not going to, I wouldnât.â Steve insists. Eddie glares but starts walking again. Steve stares at his back for a moment before he follows. Looking at Robin, he asks, âWhatâs he gonna do about it?â
Eddie spins back around again, pointing at himself as he steps toward Steve, âWhat? Me? Itâs not mine. Why-nevermind.â He spins back and pushes the door to the kitchen open.
Robin and Steve wait just inside, by the door, guarding it as Eddie goes into the corner to where Chrissy is still huddled. âHey sweetheart, Iâm here. Eddieâs here. I got you.â He scoops her up.
The faint light glints off of her beaded dress and Steve rushes in to grab her shoes off the floor, following behind as they sneak out and down a path through to the employee buildings.
They duck into the dance hall heâd seen them throwing the party in. Itâs empty now. Eddie puts Chrissy down to sit on a couch, Robin goes over to a closet and pulls out a blanket, tucking it around her. Steve leans just inside the doorway, still holding her shoes.Â
Eddie paces back and forth in front of the couch, his hair has come completely free of the bun and he looks a bit like a caged lion. âWhat did I tell you? You should have come to me.â He finally sits, taking her hand in his.
âEddie, no. I already told you, no, I canât take your money.â He sits down, looks like heâs about to protest but Chrissy stops him with a hand on his arm, âBesides, it wouldnât be enough.â
She starts to cry again, âItâs hopeless.â
Itâs heartbreaking to see her like this, sheâs so bright and vibrant. So young. And yeah, Steve has no idea what itâs like to live their lives but he canât just let her give up hope, âHey, Chrissy, donât say that. Itâs not hopeless.â
âBaby. Thatâs what they call you, right? Robin said your name was Steve but everyone calls you Baby.â Sheâs not unkind but he flinches anyway, âWith all due respect, you donât know anything about it.â
Robin shifts guiltily, clears her throat.
Chrissy stares at her, âYou didnât?! Now heâs gonna tell the Hagans and weâll all be out on the street. Everyoneâs gonna know that Chrissy Cunningham got knocked up by Jason Carver.â Sheâs angry but her tears havenât stopped.
Steve gasps, âJason? But heâs all about family values - if you just tell him, heâll take care of it, take care of you.â
Chrissy laughs but itâs brittle and empty sounding, âHe already knows.â
Robin stands up, trying to smooth everyoneâs ruffled feathers probably, âLook, we all knew Jason wouldnât help.â She spits it out vehemently, âHeâs a prick.â She licks her lips nervously, âWe heard about a traveling doctor whoâll do one, but he only goes through here once a month. Next Thursday. Itâs five hundred bucks though. Thatâs why Chrissy told Jason, trying to get him to pay for it or at least help out. What an asshole.â Robin rounds back to the couch to put her arms around Chrissy.
Chrissy needs help. And Steve wants to help people. Real people. In real ways. Not just raise money for some nameless faceless charity. He wants to change lives. He sets the strappy heels on the table and says, âIâll be right back.âÂ
As soon as he scoots out the door, he runs. His cabana is all the way across the grounds. Gotta keep the help as far away from the elite as possible, right? He passes couples out on walks, employees hustling back and forth and when he gets to his cabana he finds his dad sitting out on the porch smoking a cigar.
Swallowing down his nerves, Steve fixes his hair, his sweater, looks presentable like heâs expected to and then he takes a leap of faith.
âDad?â
âHey Baby, you have a nice night with Tommy? Heâs a nice boy, good family.â Richard swirls the whiskey in his glass, squints up at Steve until Steve sits on the top step and he can look down at him. âProbably not right for my Baby though.âÂ
Steve smiles. His dad isnât a drinker. Never has been. He allows himself one glass of whiskey a night on holidays or vacations but never as a routine and never more than one. Has always told Steve that a man should have his capacities in case he needs to protect whatâs his. Richard is a good man, a good dad. Even if he insists on calling Steve Baby still. Even if he doesnât really understand Steve all that much.
âDad, I need a favor. And you canât ask what itâs about because itâs not my place to tell you. Not my secret to share.â His dad nods, face scrunching up in concern. âCan I borrow five hundred dollars? Iâll pull it out of my account and pay you back when we get back home.â
âItâs to help someone?â Richard asks and when Steve nods, he sets the glass down on the railing and goes inside. Comes back out with a stack of twenty dollar bills. âI trust you, Baby.â
Steve gets up and throws his arms around him, âThanks, Dad.â
*
The door creaks a bit when he walks back into the hall. Eddie, Chrissy and Robin look up. Eddie looks like heâs about to grab Steve by the scruff of his neck and toss him out on his ass. Steve rushes over anyway, hands the wad of bills to Chrissy.
âWhat? Steve, you canât do this. I canât pay this back.â But sheâs clutching it so tightly that her knuckles are white. The only thing standing between her and the rest of her life is this stupid money and as much as she doesnât want it, she fucking needs it. Steve can see it in her eyes.
âListen, itâs only money to me. To you, itâsâŚwell, itâs more.â Heâs not sure what to say without assuming things about her life and her needs. And without sounding like an asshole. âYou donât have to pay me back. And donât say thank you, please. Five hundred bucks and your poor taste in men shouldnât ruin your life.â
Eddie laughs, he looks surprised by it and by Steve but he shakes his head, crosses his ankle over his knee and looks at Chrissy like, âYour move.â
âItâs not just the money.â She sighs, âWe got a standing gig that night. In another hotel. If we cancel, weâll lose our spot and they will replace us next summer.â
âWhat if Steve went in your place?â Robin suggests.
Steve looks at her like sheâs grown a second head. â Me? What about you? Youâd fit in the dress better than I would!â
Robin snorts, âYou donât have to wear a dress, dingus. You can wear a tux. I know you brought one for formal night. If not, we can find a spare in the employee uniforms.â
âThatâs a terrible idea. Literally anyone would be better.â Eddie scoffs and Steve takes offense.
âEveryone else is working.â Chrissy says, looking at Steve in a way that has him concerned.
âHe couldnât do it.â Eddie says, â Look at him.â
âYes, I can.â Steve insists with more force than he intends. âDonât tell me what I can and cannot do.â
And wait. Why is Steve arguing to do this? Steve is very firmly on Team Steve Doesnât Do This.
âEddie, you can teach anyone to dance,â Chrissy says. âAnd it doesnât have to be the best, just good enough that we donât get fired.â
âWeâre gonna have to work every day, all of my hours off. Youâll be giving up your most of your vacation.â Eddie warns, glaring at Steve again.
âGood.â Steve says, crossing his arms. Still not sure how he got to this place but contrary enough that heâs not backing down.

Neil let out a shaky breath as he scrolled down Toddâs blog. He didnât even know Todd had a Tumblr. He had only asked Todd to borrow his laptop in order to finish an essay while his was being repaired at RadioShack. But, as per usual, Neil got distracted and went to check Tumblr. When he found that Todd was still logged into it, well, curiosity got the best of him.
The other boy was currently in the shower. And after reading his most recent reblogs, Neil couldnât help but get a little riled up at the thought of the hot water cascading down Toddâs body. It took everything inside of Neil to not stride down to the showers and jump him right then and there.
Neil had found himself being more and more attracted to Todd since the beginning of the school year when they were assigned roommates. In fact, this was the first time Neil had ever really found himself attracted to another boy, so he hadnât told anyone yet. Not that his friends would judge him. Charlie was dating Steven Meeks, for Christâs sake! Neil just wanted to be sure of his feelings before he made a spectacle of himself. And after reading Toddâs blog⌠it was safe to say he was pretty sure of them. The only thing was, Toddâs blog didnât tell him anything about his gender preferences. Still, the fact that they attended a secluded all-boys school gave him an opening. And damn it, he was going to use it to his advantage.
He jumped as the door opened and moved the laptop to cover up his growing erection. Todd flashed a halfhearted smile to Neil as he made his way to his own bed, grabbing his Chemistry homework along the way. He plopped down and backed himself into the corner, already scribbling down his next answer. And Jesus, he looked so cute in his white T-shirt and black basketball shorts, a towel around his neck to catch the droplets of water falling from his hair he had brushed out of his face. He didnât even so much as look at Neil while Neil couldnât take his eyes off him.
Neil sighed as he saved what he had done of his essay to his travel drive and closed the laptop. He stood up and took a step across the room to lightly place it next to Todd.
âThanks for letting me use it,â Neilâs voice was gravelly and he immediately cleared it.
âNo problem,â Todd replied, barely above a whisper.
Neil sat back down on his own bed and looked at Todd for another few seconds before speaking. âTodd?â
The boy just looked up with a questioning look on his face.
âI, um, I went to check my TumblrâŚâ
Toddâs mouth fell open a little bit, a look of dread on his face.
âAnd I was looking at those things you reblogged,â so far, no response from Todd so he kept trudging on, âit, uh, sounds like you are a little bit sexually frustrated. I just wanted to say⌠I know what itâs like. I mean, thereâs, uh, no girls around and stuffâŚâ he trailed off and he was pretty sure his face was just as red as Toddâs was, âSo I was just going to let you know⌠we could help each other out, you know. I mean, if you want. It doesnât have to mean anything. Just a friendly handâŚâ
Todd looked mortified, and Neil was pretty sure he just made a giant ass of himself. But finally, Todd nodded. Just a little bit, but it was a nod alright.
âOkay, cool,â Neil said and quickly looked down at the notebook he had pulled into his lap.
âNeil?â he barely heard from across the room.
His head snapped up and looked at Todd, whose face was still beet red. âCan we, uh, do it now?â
Neil could only nod as he got up and made his way across the room. He crawled onto Toddâs bed on his knees and made his way closer to the boy. Todd pushed his Chemistry book off to the side and looked up to Neil in anticipation. Neil leaned down to brace himself on his arms, his face only a couple inches from Toddâs. As he was trying to work up the courage to close the distance, Todd took him by surprise and grabbed him by the hair, crashing their lips together.
Neil got up on his knees and brought Todd with him, their lips never leaving each other as they pressed their bodies against each other. Neil could feel Todd against his hip which only made more of his blood head south and a moan to leave his mouth. Todd took the initiative to rub himself against Neil. He just kept taking the darker haired boy off- guard. Who would have thought that shy, quiet Todd would be so forward in bed? Not that Neil was complaining, he earnestly complied with grinds of his own.
           âLights out!â
The boys instantly flew from each other, Neil almost falling off of the bed before Todd grabbed him and steadied him. They both sat there for a few seconds trying to calm their pounding hearts before Neil was able to get up and walk over to flip off the light switch.
He walked back to his bed and sat down before hearing, âWhat are you doing?â
âOh, I uh, didnât know if you wanted to keep goingâŚâ He said, squinting his eyes to try to see Todd in the dark. Instead of a reply, he felt himself being pushed back onto his bed and his lips be attacked. Neil couldnât wait to see how else Todd might surprise him.
Donât mind me- just reminiscing on the time when I used to be able to write??? Sounds fake. Also RIP to this account I got locked out of that actually had a good number of followers on it and all my best posts??

âŚ.yeah. Vampire eddie means a lot to meâŚ
I met Joseph Quinn at the New Orleans fan expo and no I am not okay đ I dragged my nephew along with me to get a sneaky vid of our interaction. I got him to confirm his birthday was January 26th and then we bonded over both being January babies. He looked into my soul and said âthatâs for you darlingâ then winked at me while grasping my hand. Then he gave my nephew an enthusiastic high five for having the same birthday!

Lowkey days in the winter of 1986. Drinking hot chocolate and looking through some of the photos Eddie has taken with his camera (a graduation gift from Steve).
