Fanfic Writing Ask

12 ) Do you outline your fics?  If yes, how detailed are your outlines?  How far do you stray from them?

Indeed I do!

As far as detail goes it varies depending on the scene. I go through and write down everything I want to do scene by scene. Sometimes I know what I want the atmosphere and details to be so I add those in and then outline itself becomes a small chunk that I’ll copy and paste over to the official document. Other times I know the dialogue and will write that out without much detail just to get it down.

Sometimes the outline of a scene is vague and all I know is the bare bones until I get to writing it out in the first draft.

I usually don’t stray far from an outline, but it’s been known to happen. Usually when I notice I’m not using my outline anymore and I’ve created too far I’ll force myself to make a new one to accommodate the new direction. It helps me stay on track.

16 ) Do you write by hand, on your phone, or on your laptop?

A mixture of phone and laptop!

Writing by hand would kill my will to live but I greatly admire those who manage it!

Fun side note; I do have a ton of notebooks and journals from my pre-computer pre-smartphone youth filled with fan fic drafts and ideas that will never see the light of day!

18 ) Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?

This might be controversial because generally speaking I do enjoy learning and researching things, but when it comes to my fics…nope.

I hate it. I hate having to stop when I’m in the flow of writing to research something. I hate having an idea for a fic and realizing I have to do a ton of research before hand to write it. It’s an instant mood killer and I’ll usually just forgo writing whatever I had in mind.

I honestly don’t care about realism in my writing either, I much prefer fiction in all directions.

The fic that required the most research from me was actually my Faust inspired one. It was for a gift exchange and I’d never read Faust before so I ended up doing a deep dive into that. Ironically it’s the one fic of mine I hate the most and am tempted to delete almost daily. 🫡

43 ) Is there a trope or idea that you’d really like to write but haven’t yet?

Oh so many! I’ve got a long list of ideas of things to write that I’ll eventually get around to.

I keep threatening dragon shifter au so I’m going to threaten it again just to keep my reputation in tact lol.
