Lew's Id Dreams and Artistic Revelations

It’s all getting rather exciting here in Brighton. Historically revered as a hot spot for creative expression, at last an institution dedicated to the continuation of this tradition is entering the Brighton performance network. In conglomeration with Bird Studios and BIMM Brighton, the Brighton Institute of Contemporary Theatre Training (BRICTT) is coming to life this next academic year. Here’s a little trailer which I was involved in as a dancer and model, giving you all a little flavour of the creative capacities this gorgeous little city of ours has to offer in the name of pursuing creative multimedia and interdisciplinary performance practices. 

I’ve spent the last while making these fart pieces and prior to that was making Trash TV, and in my research often stumbled upon Pipilotti Rist, but not until recently I found a downloadable file of clips of her work. And by god, she’s doing and has been doing very similar work to me in a very similar medium. She’s a source of continuous inspiration, and her audiovisual works have been feeding my practice further. Combining a Tracy Emen-esque environment with Pipilotti Rist’s surreal imagery, I hope to take this work into live space. Using their methodologies of establishing a voice through media other than direct utterance, empowering women and others oppressed in society to find in themselves a means of expression, I aim to empower my queer community by abstractly exposing my position.

My practice, my life, and my interests have been so nourishing over the years, feeding my art and my pursuits and my continuous hunt for knowledge. But like with any nourishment, there is the waste byproducts. Like a fart, excess expulsions too benign to impart great change but too substantial in their force to be totally unnoticed, my fart pieces are expelled into the world, allowing people to bask in the ambience that is the natural byproducts of my artistic existence in this world. Combining the footage, writings, sounds and thoughts which have remained in the depths of my archives, with video editing techniques and open source media which I have hounded myself, I give you peculiar flickers, hopefully beginning the conversation between us which may not have otherwise happened.

Like audibly farting alone with someone in a room, these act as the ice breaker. Be it laughter, ridicule, friendship, anger, distain, sadness, abandon, it matters not. It just starts the conversation beyond saying, “hello”.

 A congregation of bodies, each speaking a different language,

Converses in varied accents, yet moves as one.

A firework is launched in honour of Fawkes,

Fthhhhphhhhppp….BANG!!!        Woo-hoo!

 Shadowy figures beat the machines,

Cracking their screens,

As an indie girl band fill a still church with sound,

Beating their drums, plucking their strings,

And singing their siren songs.

 Three years worth of writings and thoughts,

Up in flames.

The candle, once burning at both ends,

Now dazzled by strobes and gobos.

Quick!

Do something cool!

Do a cartwheel.

Don’t use your hands.

 Pressure! Too much pressure!

Inhale.

Exhale.

Breathe, hold, and release.

Dance. There’s no set moves.

Dance because it feels good.

Your friends; the ones who dragged you to that party,

The ones who sat on the beach with you,

Who sang trashy songs with you,

Strumming or drumming on whatever was around.

 They are what this is about.

They are who this is for.

They are how this is possible.

They are why this is important.

 My people, my friends, my family, my fellows.

We are a tribe.

And fibre-by-fibre we are weaving a tapestry,

A work more beautiful than we ever imagined.

 It’s not ready yet.

Maybe we’re not ready yet.

But I give you my thread.

I give you all that I am,

My dear readers, here’s to finally announcing the first project undertaken in the name of ‘Queer Space Collective’. They are a collection of what I have lovingly dubbed fart pieces. Much like passing wind, they are a natural by-product of consuming and nourishing my artistic appetite, and have been expelled, unworthy of any specific form, but too precious to never see the light of day. They are words, images, moments, motive and sounds captured and collected throughout my life. Each week, I will share, reaching out and projecting this interesting little agenda of mine, and see who out there is interested enough to connect with me.

With my new YouTube Poop influenced audio-visual pieces, I have drawn inspiration from the ‘found-footage’ meets ‘video-diary’ aesthetic of Lizzie Grant (a.k.a Lana Del Rey) for it’s authentic reaction to the subconscious workings of the maker. I am also inspired by the work of Wendy Bevan for her surreal take on image capture and the power of montage:
