I still don't get why people like Elodin. Like to this day I still don't see the appeal deapite everyone replying to my last post. First time he meets Kvothe he spouts racist shit, he sexually harrasses a girl student (people quote that moment a LOT), he is manipulative, rude, and he gets the haha random and quirky card out. It's gross. I'll never understand the appeal of that type of charatcer.
For me, it isn't so much as him as his style of teaching.
Yeah, I don’t get that. What of his teaching style is appealing? Misleading, rude, crass, and manipulating his teacher status to get students in trouble (namely Kvothe)? Belittles all of his students, doesn’t teach and claims it’s “just how it is” (like bad college teachers who have a high fail rate), and probably more about his style I’m forgetting. Is this supposed to be the like... haha cool teacher like us type of ordeal???
It’s a couple reasons for me.
1. I think i was what 13 when I read NOTW the first time. And it’s still shocking to me to realized it’s not considered a YA novel. I’d been reading stuff with clear villains and heroes, wise old mentors, etc... And Elodin is presented as a sort of joke i guess, not really meant to be taken seriously. So I kinda just overlooked the raunchy shit he said/pulled, because i hadn’t really seen Problematic Characters that weren’t blatantly problematic/villains.
2. I haven’t reread it in a very long time so the picture of him i have in my head is more of the headcanons i have made/assumed instead of book canon (same with Bast tbh)
3. He doesn’t put up with kvothe’s bs, in a different way than the other masters. He’s antagonistic, but not outright malevolent like Hemme (again, could be wrong cos hey havent read it since HS). Naming the class “not being a stupid jackass”, distracting him with pinecones, etc... are tamer than having him whipped.
4. Imo, he’s the character with the most mystery to his past. He entered the university at a young age and somehow became chancellor, he’s probably been to the fae, knows a bit of Ademic hand gesturing, etc... and now that i think about it... he seems like he’s what kvothe might have turned into if he hadn’t been expelled.
