“I’m going to die.”

Sophie looks over from her homework. She swivels the chair around and smiles at you tenderly, her bun flopping as her head tilts. “Painkillers not kicking in yet?”

“No,” you grumble, burrowing farther underneath the covers. You smush your face into your pillow so that your voice is muffled as you whine. “My body hates me.”

“You have to wait a few minutes,” Sophie reminds gently. You can hear that soft smile in the way she speaks to you, but you don’t have the energy to look over at her - even if the sight of her smiling would probably make you feel a little better.

“It’s been years.”

Sophie chuckles at your insistence. You hear the desk chair creak as she stands and the flower petals crush beneath her soft-soled shoes as she pads over to you. Your face is still buried in one of the pillows as you feel her hand reach down and begin to rub your back.

“Do you need anything?”

You hear the sweet understanding in the tone of her voice. With a sigh you pull your head out from the fluff of the pillow. Sophie looks at you fondly, like she knows your pain and you have to fight the urge not to burst into tears. You don’t even know why you want to cry - maybe it’s the cramps, maybe it’s the fact that you’ve had to pee for the past five minutes but don’t want to get out of bed, or maybe it’s because you’re so thankful to have someone who sets aside their homework due the following morning just so they can comfort you in your time of need.

You ponder Sophie’s offer. As much as you want to stuff yourself full of ripplepuffs and custard bursts and every treat known to elves, you know it would hurt you in the end. Your stomach would grow upset and keep you from the sleep you so desperately need. And as much as you want a bath and to get out of the pajamas you haven’t change for the past few days, you know you do not want to get up.

So, you hold out your hand.

Sophie’s smile softens at it, knowing what you need. “Okay,” is all she says. She starts to take off her shoes and discard her cape on the floor so that she can crawl into bed beside you. The mattress dips with her weight and she shifts close enough to you that you can feel her breath tickling her cheeks and her legs tangling with yours, but not to the point where it’s considered cuddling. She knows you’re too hot and stuffy to want that much contact. But she does reach over and start to console you by rubbing your hip.

“You want some slumberberry tea?” Sophie asks. “I think it would help you sleep.”

You shake your head. You can’t stomach anything right now. Not even tea. “No thanks.”

“Do you want me to book you an appointment with the alicorn?” Sophie offers, cracking a grin when you let out a laugh.

“No,” you say. As much as you love the dreams Silveny gives you, you just want uninterrupted rest. No weird, sugary dreams. “I think I just want to sleep on my own.”

“You need me to do anything for you?”

You think about it for awhile. Then you pipe, “You think Elwin can surgically remove my uterus?”

Sophie bursts into a fit of giggles. “No, no surgery. I can stay here, though, if that’s what you want.”

You nod. “Yeah,” you say, already feeling the drowsiness begin to burn behind your eyelids. “I’d like that.”
