Rachel Reidâs defense of calling Shane a stupid idiot being that she also calls her autistic child a stupid idiot has to be the most autism mom thing Iâve heard in awhile
You know sometimes I just think about Jacob saying âthe bear tattoo was stupid/sillyâ and âgay people donât save eating ass for later in the relationship. Theyâre eating ass first fuckâ (paraphrasing here) and I want so badly to sit him down and lean in and ask him âplease tell me every single critique you have and every passage you read that made you want to cringe out of your fucking skin.â because you KNOW. YOU KNOWWWW. HE HAS to have SO MANY of them. And I want to know them ALL
âilya rozanov unreliable narrator thisâ âilya rozanov unreliable narrator thatâ baby have u considered he is the lucky beneficiary of very obvious
if ilya read some of the stuff rachel reid says about #HisShane heâd start committing crimes

My thoughts on how rape culture was handled in role model
CW: discussion of role model by Rachel Reid and sexual assault
1. Why is a narrative around sexual assault and rape culture in hockey featured around a *man* who 1.5. does not have relationships with or sex with women? Like this isnât to say that gay men canât participate in misogyny or rape culture but rather that the participation of bisexual and heterosexual men in misogyny and rape culture differs because they have sex with women.
2. None of Kentâs victims are named in text even though four of them agree to come forward not anonymously. And (granted this is hard because of limited third person pov) it fails the Bechdel test đ.
3. Dallas is a serial rapist with something like a dozen known victims or something like that, which means statistically speaking the actual number is higher. I think part of the reason RR made him a serial rapist is a thing we see so much in media around rape and sexual assault which is that in order to combat the viewer/reader not believing the survivor they either introduce the volume of accusations of the severity of what happened. Why not just give Dallas Kent one victim that speaks out because:
4.1. People, even men, are a lot more likely to believe men that have multiple accusers, possibly across different states, territories, and countries. Like even in defense of other serial offenders itâs usually not people believing that the guy didnât do the thing, rather people saying it did happen, but wasnât a crime because X. One victim, even two or three, is more likely to result in the victims not being believed but when you have as many as Dallas did, generally itâs a numbers game because most people understand they canât all be lying. Again yes there are outliers especially in the hockey world but like⌠serial rapists are low hanging fruit for participants in rape culture to be like, âsee! We do hold rapists accountable!â because they criticize him. But the other reason why itâs terrible Dallas is a serial rapist is
4.2. It makes it really sus that Troy didnât know. Because wdym you donât know that your best friend, who you drink with, party with, go to events with, have hung out and probably spent the night in their house. Your best friend, who, crucially, doesnât believe he did anything wrong and who believes that you, dear one, agree with him in every area? That best friend is a serial rapist and you had no idea? He never bragged to you or asked you to participate? So had suspicious behavior taking a woman home or to his room? You never realized at any point that his dehumanization of woman was dangerous?
Except, you saw a pattern of him treating women poorly and immediately believed a story of him assaulting a woman because it reflected patterns you had already seen. And youâre telling me that you didnât notice????? That it was serial????
Like kinda the one thing that most serial abusers have in common is that most people around them know and ignore it or quietly warn people.
5. Troyâs posts on social media focus on resources for survivors and not actually addressing rape culture, whereas Troy would be a very powerful person to help pink pill teenage boys to prevent them growing up in rape culture.
6. Multiple characters in the text question of Troy knew, Wyatt even says he thought Troy wouldâve participated, and Wyatt says that it was obvious to anyone they knew Kent that he was guilty, suggesting that someone even closer to Kent would probably have an even better understanding of it. And in my experiences, guys like this are not quiet about it especially when they think theyâre in a safe space and can share stories freely. And when it comes to it being serial instead of a one off or a handful of times, that increases the likelihood of Troy knowing and itâs just like⌠the implications of what Troy was ignoring are just⌠fucked up.
7. I donât think the tone of this series lends itself well to addressing something like serial rape, especially if youâre not going to like⌠make the themes of this book heavier than the others and still go for the fun, almost rom-com harlequin style romance. Because yanno, this is a heavy af topic.
hi i am both a hockey fan and someone who has studied sexual violence and i have some possibly valuable things to add
1. there is a very good chance rr based kentâs arrest on a very real trial (that ended in exoneration despite mounting evidence of guilt). iâll spare details, suffice to say it was horrific. look up âhockey canada trialâ at your own risk. that said, 1.1 the nhl player we know for a fact was named as a defendant is still very much an nhl player who made it to the stanley finals this year and 1.2 that trial was one victim v multiple perpetrators, not one perpetrator v multiple victims. interesting how the latter can narratively communicate a loss or lack of power (many vs one) despite dallas being very rich and famous. just an observation.
2. statistically? if kent were a real person who was guilty of rape, his victim would be his current or ex girlfriend/fiance/wife and she would be his only victim. most rapists are not serial rapists and most rapists do not rape strangers. imo, making kent a serial rapist who drugs his victims turns him into more of a boogeyman we can collectively hate without hesitation. rr doesnât do nuance â dallas kent is an evil monster that exists in a vacuum and all the other Good Men in her books cannot do the things he did because they are Good. 2.1 thereâs also some inherent though not necessarily intentional victim blaming in how she writes kent and everyoneâs reactions. everyone except troy (and apparently kentâs victims) could tell by looking at him that kent was a rapist, which i can tell you from experience is not what anyone wants to hear about their rapist. it implies you should have or could have seen it coming and incorrectly assumes only a certain type of person is a rapist.
3. troyâs reaction actually makes a lot of sense imo? not only because heâs so inwardly focused due to his struggle w his sexuality and various other internal conflicts, but because rape culture and homophobia are inextricably linked. it would make a lot of sense if troyâs experience with rape culture centered around fear of being victimized; players from many sports including hockey have disclosed being sexually assaulted by teammates due to their sexuality. sexual humiliation also seems to be some kind of hazing ritual in these environments (not just sports but frats, the military, etc) and homophobia is a huge part of that. it makes sense that he doesnât see how rape culture in hockey basically created kent, at least not right away.
4. ultimately dallas kent and his victims are a plot device which fucking blows because there is an opportunity here for a very compelling story about troy being a survivor of sexual violence and how that experience colors his relationship to his queerness and to hockey and to masculinity. not that iâd trust rr to write that story. but the fact that none of the main characters in any of her books are survivors of sexual violence is statistically impossible
i am holding the heated rivalry fandomâs hand and asking that we break free of gender essentialism and the subsequent assumption that the only #feminist opinion is that art made by women is inherently more insightful or Deep or meaningful and art made by men is inherently more surface-level or shallow or meaningless
ilya is written like he's rachel reid's first born son that she's in love with and that summarizes my criticism of heated rivalry tbh
okay last thing but ryan price's story is also a horrible depiction of mental health issues and treatment. he's supposedly seeing a therapist and on anxiety medication that is "helping." he's a barely functional nervous wreck and he can't orgasm and now he's also anxious about not being able to orgasm. he has a panic attack on every plane ride. how is that possibly a successful treatment regimen. the medication is clearly doing fuckall for him besides giving him a limp dick. that is not an acceptable benefit/side effect balance. time to try something else!! also please for the love of god give him a tranquilizer for the plane.
the other thing ill say is it could have been very interesting for reid to address the rapid and inexplicable changes to shaneâs personality at the end of the long game (immediately overcoming his disordered eating, not wanting to watch the stanley cup finals, passively forgiving everyone offscreen, being excited to play in ottawa without complications) as likeâŚâŚ. shane is experiencing a severe dissociative episode.
shane â who at this point has spent the entire book being told by literally everyone that he needs to be less mopey and anxious and to support ilyaâs life more â fully compartmentalises everything and pushes all of it down. heâs never been happier, truly. yes heâd love to host the centaurs at his new house without warning. heâd love to do a photoshoot. heâd love to post a video on instagram. heâd love to be the butt of the joke. look how much fun heâs having. this is great. he just needs to be less worried about everything and itâll all work out. ilya will take care of it. he just needs to go to the back of the line. yes, he wants another slice of chocolate cake please and thank you
ideally i think. ilya and his parents would perhaps slowly catch on that the bizarre stepford wife act is in fact a coping mechanism and shane hollander the person is in fact grieving in total freefall. itd be nice for other characters to objectively look at the situation and think. man i canât believe we were mad at shane for getting threatened by the commissioner of the nhl or being outed twice over or being accused of cheating and losing both his professional career and his reputation. but in the meantime shane is doing just awesome thanks for asking.

the late senator graham and i disagreed on pretty much everything, but credit where itâs due. this quote of his is an all-timer:
itâs arguably the most honest thing that anyone has said in politics.
antisemite frantically running around the capitol trying to find the jews who control shit:
There is only we, and we usually don't know what the fuck we're doing GODDAMNIT LINDSEY STOP MAKING GOOD POINTS
It is an interesting idea that the whole âJews control the worldâ might actually be a comfort fantasy, since the idea that thereâs no one controlling anything and everything is just human judgment and error is terrifying in its own unique way.
Hey kids, you need to start worrying a little less about getting â#moggedâ and a little more about getting â#smoggedâ. This is an Air Quality Index public service announcement.
Several years ago I saw this post on here that was originally the OP talking about Simon and Garfunkel and said âitâs so funny how Simon is like the name of a normal dude and Garfunkel is like the name of a little goblin manâ and it became really good commentary on antisemitism and the fact that these two Jewish men, in this context, represent the erasure of assimilation versus the dehumanization of stereotypes. I canât find that post but I think about it a lot.
only vaguely related but iâm sorry youâve activated my unskippable cutscene
the more things change the more they stay the same i guess⌠also worth noting that afaik garfunkel, along with streisand, was one of the first jewish americans in the industry to use their very jewy last name instead of a stage name.
all this is to say that, while i think a bit of joking about garfunkelâs name is ok (hell nobody is more guilty of this than paul simon lol) i would appreciate it if gentiles would be careful with how they talk about certain things. at the same time, these days i see people being like âNEVER say anything about garfunkelâs nameâ while also posting blood libel the next day bc thatâs the state of the internet rn so itâs really not the biggest fish to fry.
Languages tend to peak at their word for butterfly. Never seen 2 that are the same, either. Papillon. Mariposa. Borboleta. Fluture. Vlinder. Schmetterling. PillangĂł. Babochka. Farfalla. Sommerfugl. Perhonen. Farasha. Titali. ChĹchĹ. Nabi. HĂşdiĂŠ. Buom buom. Great job guys, i really mean it.
Joy and whimsy detected! This post is joyful and whimsical đŚ
I'm perfectly fine with people criticizing my favorite stories and frequently do it myself but can you stop being so boring about it
"This scene made me so uncomfortable" given the subject matter, it would be really, really badly written if it wasn't.

reblog to diminish the horrors from the person you reblogged from
diminishing each otherâs horrors on 901 days left
This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!
