A ‘Bears walk in to Ilya’s house and see him napping with Shane AU’ where Ilya somehow manages to still keep Shane’s identity a secret.
Ilya always had been a light sleeper, so no matter how lightly they stepped he was awake moments after the first shocked gasp.
Ilya knows it’s over for him. There’s no mistaking that there’s a man asleep on his chest in a clearly non-platonic cuddle. Usually Ilya would be punching the intruder, threatening violence to try and ensure they kept their mouth shut but he has quickly realised something far more important. With the way they are sleeping, Ilya on his underneath on his back and Shane on his stomach on top with his face pressed into the gap between Ilya’s neck and the couch, they can’t see his face.
He quickly pulls Shane’s hood up over his head to hide hair and rests a hand over it to gently discourage Shane from moving it should he start to wake up.
So Ilya just stares down his team and goes “you can be upset, but are going to be fucking quiet about it because if you wake my guest I’m sending all my blackmail on you to your wives, and then start fucking them to help them get over the divorce.”
So the whole “You’re fucking gay!” “No, I’m a fucking bi who is fucking a gay” conversation happens at a furious whisper, with Shane blissfully sleeping on Ilya’s chest as life implodes around him.
Shane may be a deep sleeper - and the argument in whispers - but even he starts to stir at the noise.
Ilya can’t have him moving his face into visibility now, so he just scruffs the back of his neck harshly and pressed him deeper into his shoulder.
Shane lets out a pleased (and not at all quiet) moan, and - worried that he is going to start talking - Ilya realises he needs to shut him up.
So he glares at the Bears to be quiet, while suddenly putting on the softest voice they have ever heard him use as he goes, “shhh quiet time now mоя любовь. Back to sleep.” And then shoves his fingers into Shane’s mouth.
When the Bears leave soon after, some of them have LEARNT some things about themselves. But crucially, none of them have learnt who their captain is fucking.

i pay attention to things that most people ignore by @extendedpl4y (4.9k, T) - hayden realizes lily is ilya all on his own. i usually read (and write) fics with hayden as a dumbass so this is a nice change and very sweet!
In Sickness and In Health by gnomey2001 (5.5k, E) - shane gets the stomach flu after fleeing the tuna meltdown and so do all the raiders. shane is stuck in boston when the game is canceled, and ilya takes care of him. i love a post-tuna meltdown fix it and really enjoyed how everything was resolved.
slow motion, love potion by @delsicle (6.8k, E) - sex worker ilya is hired by shane in sochi during the winter olympics so he can experiment with a man. hot, sweet, and sad all at once. lovely writing
78 seconds by @felifiran (11k, E) - instead of shane being injured at the boston-montreal game, ilya takes a skate to the neck. it’s not as graphic as it sounds (but obviously there are discussions of blood). some lovely hurt/comfort, perfect if you want something bittersweet

God, I love old man yaoi. This story is peak of that genre, my favorite older Hollanov fic in the fandom. Both Shane and Ilya are gorgeous and sexy with their aging bodies that feel lived-in, human, and so real. Ilya in particular is the most beautiful bear in the forest, and this author is amazing at writing body language. They have a distinctive style that I have trouble describing, but it completely immerses you in the world. Shane and Ilya are written to perfection. More mature, yes, but still pretty terrible at communicating. Ilya's son is such a little shit, but I grew to love him quickly in this author's capable hands. A++++
The Tennis Club by @luulapants and @mock-arts
This one imagines a world in which the queer men of the MLH find each other, connect, and hook up. It's OC-heavy, but the OCs are all lovable, fleshed out, and interesting. The fic even comes with beautifully drawn portraits of what they look like (complete with dick pics which is fun) and bios to help keep track. I urge you to give it a shot even if OCs aren't your thing. Scott, Ilya, Shane, and Ryan (a favorite for me in this one) still feature, and it's interesting to see how the group changes their dynamic.
I'm not a gay man, but the way these guys interact in the closeted world they're trapped in feels more true-to-life than the Game Changers universe. The loneliness, the genuine love and understanding between them, the messiness of having to hide and all that comes with it. It's very well-done.
Lean on me not by slagglass
Ilya is outed earlier in canon and deals with the fallout.
The Ilya characterization in this one is stellar. The repressed rage, the fear of being abandoned, and the stoppered grief all come through while Ilya hangs on by his fingernails to the cliff's edge. I can tell this writer thought about the real repercussions of this happening. The threat from Russia, the interpersonal awkwardness, the dangers to Ilya's health and employment. Their take on Svetlana is fantastic, especially the subtle themes around gender you can read between the lines.
This is not the Ilya that cried in Shane's arms and admitted to loving him. This is a younger, more conflicted Ilya who doesn't know how to process anything but has been knuckling down and surviving for his entire life. My heart broke for him in the best way.

This one is soulmate AU wherein Shane shows up in other people's dreams.
I am not a big soulmate trope person, but this fic is so cool. It's written in a flowing style that suits the themes. The world-building makes me want to write in this universe too which is something that rarely happens to me. I like the way Shane's family life and childhood are expanded. Young Shane is well-characterized. Irina makes a poignant and bittersweet appearance that really stuck with me.
This is a good one to dive into when you want to totally immerse yourself in imagination.

I think a lot of people in fandom have read this one, but just in case you're not one of them, I have to rec it! It's another outing fic, this time with Shane as the focus, and it's soooo gooooood. Emotionally intense, cathartic, thrilling. The whole series feels like an addiction to me, I just want more. I'm a sucker for a healing journey, and that's what this is, with all the pitfalls and triumphs that come with it.
Ilya and Shane are well-written of course, but all the side characters are excellent as well.

Mind the tags, this one deals with mental health and thoughts of suicide. If you feel comfortable reading that, please check this out. It's a tender, poignant little series in which Hayden (at first unknowingly) supports Ilya and then Ilya supports Hayden. They become reluctant but sincere family, and Ilya is called upon to help Jade PIke deal with depression.
This one squeezed my heart so good. It's written with sensitivity and care. I love Ilya's dynamic with the Pikes.

Can I even make a rec list without including dragonmuse? It's not my fault everything they write is so good!
This is a delicious morsel of a fic about Ilya and Shane selling their wares at a farmer's market. It's light-hearted, funny, and fun. As always, dragon writes side-characters and community well. Yuna in particular had me hootin-and-hollerin with her antics. They really nailed the loving but gossipy vibe of a niche group.
I would kill to see this made into a TV show or romantic comedy. The premise is genius tbh.
Read this one when you want to brighten your day.

i think i've posted this before, but ilya truly does deserve an award for his patience after getting woken up at fuck o'clock at the cottage for a five year plan strategy session when he was in the middle of a rem cycle.
like the way he asked "what is nur-ate-iv?" makes me think man TRULY was not catching all of the words getting tossed at him so fast the second his eyes were even a LITTLE open. like he wasn't asking "what story did you come up with?" he's asking "what word are you even saying to me right now?" man got like 0.2 seconds to be like "oh i'm awake now?" before he was getting PELTED with english because shane had a forty step plan that couldn't wait like. three more hours.
i would have hit him with a pillow and said let's circle back, so kudos to ilya.
this also does mean that shane rarely wakes up in a bed with the same number of people it had when he fell asleep
either ilya is completely mia because he went to lay down with whatever kiddo came to get him and then fell asleep in their bed without meaning to, or shane wakes up to little feet pushing into his kidney or a little fist tucked under his arm or a kiddo sprawled sideways over him AND ilya in a way that canNOT be comfortable
shane always handles getting everyone put together and fed breakfast, but the first step of every morning routine is just a headcount to find out where everyone ended up overnight
