Sanji could see the moment Zoro caught on to the fact that he was taking anything fragile out of the line of fire. He watched in amusement as the Swordsman took stock of where his swords were lying the other side of the room. He was expecting Sanji to fight him.
Instead, the cook merely scooted himself down the bench and in one fluid motion was pressed up against Zoro, shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee. The Swordsman reared his head back in surprise as Sanji slithered an arm behind him, resting it against the back of the bench and against the window of the crowâs nest.
âNeed a cuddle, Marimo?â
Thank you to the Anon that requested this!
Sanji chewed on the butt of his cigarette as he watched Zoro from the galleyâs window. The Swordsman was staring broodingly out of the Crowâs nest window, moping up there since lunch. Although, itâd be more accurate to say heâd been brooding since last week. He wasnât even training some days, which was the strangest part. Thatâs how Sanji knew the brute was actually worried about something.
Not that Sanji should give a shit. The Swordsman didnât need him fretting over him. The last thing Zoro would want was Sanji, of all people, asking him if he was okay. No, someone else would notice and the idiot would be fine. Sanji knew Luffy was probably one gum gum bounce away from bounding up there himself to speak with him.
Sanji reassured himself of all of this as he trayed up a bottle of sake and two drinking glasses and made his way to the crowâs nest ladder. Curse his stupid bleeding heart and the bastard Mosshead that was dragging his attention away from dinner. Not that it wasnât practically ready to go anyways...
He didnât bother knocking as he reached the trapdoor. Zoro let out an amusing eeek as it banged off the ground. Sanji hadnât heard him make that noise in years, not since theyâd both developed observation haki. Sanji couldnât hold back his laughter, reveling in the red faced Marimo now scowling at him.
âAlright, Marimo?â Sanji wheezed, kicking the door shut behind him.
âWhat do you want.â Zoro growled, biting his tongue as he noticed the white shining bottle of sake making its way towards him. He raised a questioning brow at the Cook. It wasnât even dinner, why was the cook giving him this?
âWhat? You donât want to share a drink?â Sanji teased, sitting at arm's length from Zoro on the bench that curved the large circumference of the room.
He watched Zoro as he tensed in his seat, squirming as Sanji got closer. Sanji could tell something was off with the brute; he was unsettled in a way Sanji had never seen before. A thought crossed the Cooks mind as he poured them each a glass.
âI never said that.â Zoro grumbled, crossing his arms and squinting at Sanji with his good eye. What was the cook playing at.
Sanji only smiled as a response, offering one of the glasses to Zoro by holding it up between them. Why was he handing it to him? Zoroâs suspicion grew as Sanji seemed to purposely flick his wrist and have their fingers brush as Zoro yanked his hand away.
It wasnât like their hands hadnât brushed before. But the connection sent little shocks through Zoroâs hand, a warmth spreading through him like a shot of liquor as the fog that had been bothering his mind all day seemed to thin. What the fuck was happening to him?
Sanji didnât mean to laugh, he didnât want to come across as cruel. But it was entertaining watching the gears turning in Zoroâs head, his skin flushing pink in embarrassment as he seemed to struggle with something. Sanji felt almost mean being as smug as he was. But heâd figured out what was wrong with Zoro. Why the Mossball had been a recluse the last few days and why he was fidgeting like Luffy while he swirled the contents of his glass.
âWhat?â Zoro barked, his temper short as he noticed Sanji laughing at him.
Sanji just downed his glass of sake, watching as Zoro followed his lead, narrowing his eye at the blond and slamming his glass down the far side of the bench. Sanji copied the motion, dragging the bottle from between them as well and placing it out of harm's way.
The Swordsman reared his head back in surprise as Sanji slithered an arm behind him, resting it against the back of the bench and against the window of the crowâs nest.
âNeed a cuddle, Marimo?â
âWh-What?â Zoro stuttered, much to Sanjiâs unbridled delight, his gaze unable to stay still as he took in Sanjiâs arm wrapping itself around his neck; the closeness of the Cookâs face; and the burning he felt across his skin that itched wherever Sanji touched him.
âDo. You. Need. A. Cuddle?â Sanji drawled, speaking in that slow one-word mocking way that he does when he really wants to piss Zoro off.
âWhy the fuck would I need a cuddle, dartbrow?â Zoro retorted, slamming a hand on the bench behind him so he could lean further away from Sanji. The cook must have gone mad, or this was some insane imposter that clearly hadnât done his research on the swirly browed idiot.
âYouâve been hiding away the last few days up here, you barely do more than grunt at meals, and you flinched at the one bit of human contact youâve felt in probably days.â
âSo?â Zoro grumbled, turning to look at the interesting pattern of wooden planks making up the floor of the crowâs nest. What was the dumb cook's point? Zoro didnât need to be the life of the party, he was the grump that worked out and napped, and he liked it that way.
âSo? You seem touch starved.â Sanji shrugged, speaking kindly now as he studied the side of Zoroâs face.
The cook was surprised he hadnât bolted for the door yet. But then he noticed, that despite trying to create distance between their torsos, Zoro hadnât pulled away from where their legs were still pressed tightly together. Maybe Sanji was on to something.
âTouch starved?â Zoro turned his head slowly, his gaze warily meeting Sanjiâs as the cook continued to smile at him. It was unnerving.
âYeah, itâs when you donât get enough human interaction, mostly physical interaction. It can make your skin crawl, lower your mood, affect your sleep, make working out less effective...â
âThat last ones not true!â
âYes, it is!â Sanji insisted, although it was a bit of a stretch to phrase it like that, but he could see from the frown growing on Zoroâs face that he was right to say it. If Zoro thought it was going to affect his training, heâd take it more seriously. Then he might let Sanji help...
Not that Sanji wanted to cuddle the brute! He just...he knew what it was like, to suffer from it. He also knew that Zoro wouldnât ask for help with it in a million years, he clearly didnât even understand it. Sanji would rather have the Swordsman back in full health than waste another second worrying about him. He had better things to be doing.
âFine.â Zoro grunted, his ears now tinged red as he stubbornly avoided Sanjiâs eye. âHow do I fix it?â
âYou donât.â Sanji enjoyed the look of confusion on the idiotâs face far too much. âYou canât fix it by yourself. Like I said, you need human interaction.â
He gave Zoroâs shoulders a squeeze with his arm to emphasize his point. It earned another squeak from Zoro, followed by a withering glare that he shot the Cook, daring him to mock him. Sanji just smiled wider at the humiliation burning through Zoroâs expression. Sanji was still being nice! He was just going to make sure to enjoy himself at the same time.
âFine.â Zoro relaxed by a fraction after almost a full minute of silence. He leaned against the back of the bench, now crossing his arms over his chest and stubbornly looking over his opposite shoulder. He was still almost as rigid as a board and Sanji couldnât help but roll his eyes, and Zoro says heâs the dramatic one.
âIt doesnât work if you sit there like a statue.â Sanji huffed, his breath ruffling some of Zoroâs spikes.
âShut up.â Zoro mumbled, uncrossing his arms in an attempt to relax. His arms felt too long and awkward as they fell into his lap, his hands curling into loose fists. He couldnât help it. What did Sanji expect? They were rivals, assholes to each other that only touched to smack each other around. This felt surreal and uncomfortable, even with the obvious warm effect it was having on Zoro. It did feel nice to be held, although heâd rather eat one of his swords than admit that, especially to the cook. But Zoro still couldnât work out why the cook was acting like this. That, above anything else, was what was really making him uneasy.
âWhy are you even doing this?â Zoro snarled, glaring at Sanji from the corner of his eye.
âWhat? I canât help out a crewmate?â Sanji grinned, biting his tongue to stop himself from laughing at Zoroâs distrusting grimace.
âNot when itâs me.â Zoro scoffed, hunching more in on himself as he spoke.
âAw, insecure, Marimo?â Sanji barely managed to avoid the sharp elbow Zoro sent towards his side, chuckling as he had to duck a smack to the head.
âThatâs it, tire yourself out.â
That comment earned a roar of indignation and now Sanji had to bring up a leg to block Zoroâs next wild punch. He somehow managed to keep his arm around the brute the whole time, laughing as they tugged each other back and forth. Eventually, Zoro started to grin too, finally relaxing at the normalcy of the scene.
After a particularly hard shove, Sanji realised Zoro was about to go sailing onto his back so, without thinking, his arm slipped from Zoroâs shoulder and caught his waist, drawing the Swordsman closer. Sanji might have taken a moment to feel embarrassed by the much more intimate pose heâd dragged them into, if he wasnât immediately captivated by an honest to God squeal leaving the Mossheadâs lips.
Zoroâs one eye widened as his face flushed a new shade of red, the colour travelling down the back of his neck and once again tinting his ears. Of course, how could Sanji forget the demon of the east blueâs biggest weakness.
âCook-â Is the only threat Zoro gets out before Sanji uses his position to goose the Swordsman side again.
Zoro whined as his torso bucked, a hand shooting up to Sanjiâs chest to try shove him away. All Sanji could do was laugh as he dug his fingers further into toned muscle as Zoroâs pained sounds started to sound suspiciously like giggles.
âKn-Knock it off.â Zoro yelled, trying to twist away as Sanji followed him down the bench.
The insistent fingers were carving into Zoroâs skin as the nerves in his sides lit up. His stomach ached as he frantically struggled to breathe. A foreign warmth washed over him as his coiled muscles unwound and became like jelly as his body spasmed with laughter. His battle against the Cook became a losing one as Zoro was also attempting to twist his face away from Sanjiâs gaze, trying to muffle his laughter against his own shoulder as the lovecook persisted like the asshole he was.
âWhatâs wrong, Marimo? Canât handle a bit of tickling? Iâm just trying to give you some of the human touch youâve been craving.â Sanji cackled, starting to struggle to hold Zoro still with his one arm.
âFuck off, you- you ah-ahass.â Zoro growled, as he felt Sanjiâs other arm wrap around his waist, deft fingers drilling into the soft flesh just beneath his abs.
âNah, an ass would do this.â Zoro wheezed as Sanjiâs hand caressed across his abdomen, a cheeky finger slipping into his bellybutton. It was an unbearable sensation that ripped a snort from Zoro that left any dignity he had, in tatters. The giggles that followed were like music to Sanjiâs ears. It felt strangely nostalgic, hearing the Swordsman let go like this, to laugh this freely. So, Sanji continued to trace ticklish trails along Zoroâs stomach, squeezing and fluttering without any pattern.
Zoro started to howl with laughter as he banged his head back, knocking himself against Sanjiâs chest as the Cook drew him in tighter, his own chuckles tickling the back of Zoroâs neck. It took Sanji another minute of listening to Zoroâs erratic laughter to notice that Zoro wasnât even fighting that hard against him anymore.
âYou-ahaha are-ahHH the fu-fucking worah-ahah-st!â Zoro howled, not even trying to hide his face anymore as he lost the ability to even think about being embarrassed, too focused on the cookâs next move.
âHmm, do you mean that Mossball? You donât seem to be trying very hard to get away from me, or am I just that much stronger than you?â
Zoro hated how every smug word made the whole situation that much more electric and unbearable. He hated that he couldnât breathe in deep enough to shoot back a retort, or that his brain was beginning to struggle at stringing a sentence together. But most of all, he hated that what Sanji was saying was true.
He could have flipped the blonde onto the ground by now or drove an elbow deep enough into Sanjiâs gut to wind him. But instead, he let Sanjiâs hands trail down to his hips, even though the area already stung with anticipation. The funk heâd been in the past week had been all consuming. Zoro wasnât one to become unfocused, and this was the first time in a week that he wasnât thinking about how shit a mood he was in.
âNo! N-Not th-therahah-â That was all that Zoro could grit out as Sanji latched onto his hips, his thumbs rubbing gentle circles over the hollows of the bones.
âWhere? Here, Marimo?â Sanji was beaming from ear to ear now. He couldnât quite believe that Zoro didnât have a comeback for once, that he was begging. This was almost too good to be true.
Zoro shrieked as Sanji drilled in deep, his hands flying to Sanjiâs as he tried to pry them off. It didnât do much though and soon Zoro was silently wheezing, his head falling back and landing against Sanjiâs shoulder as he screwed his eye tightly shut. He was overwhelmed from the sensation, his brain not registering anything but the currents lighting up his nerves and the panic flailing around his head.
Eventually, Sanji took pity and stopped. He snorted as Zoro twitched and gasped as Sanjiâs hands moved innocently back to his sides. But this time, Sanji was kind and simply cupped his hands around Zoroâs sides, holding him against his chest.
Zoro had tried to kick his legs out at one point and now they were resting on the bench too, his body weight fully leaning against Sanji as his head slipped down to the cookâs collarbone. The swordsman didnât dare open his eye, not ready to take in the insufferable expression on the cookâs face. This was a lot more comfortable than before, especially now that he was relaxed. Although he was still panting, his chest rising and falling quickly as he tried to catch his breath. He was going to get Sanji back for this...as soon as his strength came back.
âSee, this is how you cuddle.â Sanji grinned, slowly looping his arms more comfortably around Zoroâs mid-riff. The brute just grunted in response, stubbornly pouting as Sanji stared down at him.
âYouâre a dick.â Zoro finished his insult by twisting his face into Sanjis arm. Sanji definitely did not find that cute.
âMhm, you really want to insult me now?â Sanji harmlessly wiggled his fingers where they were tucked tightly against Zoroâs sides, just inches below his armpit. The grunt and panicked wiggle that followed sent Sanji into another wave of laughter, the sound coming loudly and genuinely from the bottom of his stomach.
âStop, you idiot. Iâm not going to torture you anymore.â Sanji hummed, leaning himself against the back of the bench as he moved one of the arms holding Zoro to loop over the Swordsmanâs shoulder, his hand finding a way to Zoroâs hair.
âYouâre a sadist.â Zoro grumbled into Sanjiâs suit, earning an eye roll from the cook.
âYou need a nap, grumpy.â
âDoes someone need a lullaby, or a bedtime story?â
âIâm going to cut you into the tiniest little ribbons, Ero-Cook.â
âSure Marimo, Iâm sure. Now, do what you do best you lazy piece of shit and take a nap.â
Zoro didnât respond again. Just mumbled something that Sanji could only feel against his arm, rather than hear. After a few moments of raking his fingers rhythmically through Zoroâs spikes, the Swordsman seemed to nod off. His chest rose and dropped in a slow steady beat and after a while gentle snores filled the room. A much softer sound than the cacophony of the rest of the boyâs bunk occupants.
He was convinced that Zoro had fallen into a deep sleep as the sun slowly set over the horizon. Sanjiâs chest tightened as he realised itâd been way over an hour and he needed to go plate up dinner before Luffy got to the galley. But Zoro looked so peaceful, so young, Sanji wanted to savour this before they went back to their usual brutal charade. As he carefully slid Zoro down to the bench and got himself to his feet, Zoro took in a sharp breath. He didnât open his eye, or twist his body to face Sanji, but quietly over the distant lapping of the sea, he muttered-
Sanji felt his chest tighten again, this time for a much a different reason. He didnât want to think too hard about the butterflies battling in his stomach as he took a step away.
As Sanji shut the hatch to the crows nest, he had to admit, he really hoped there would be a next time.
