Lazy Matter

Warning: This contains spoilers (to a 25 year old movie (which you probably have already seen (or at least heard about (a lot recently I’d bet (so if you haven’t seen the movie and are upset after reading this, it’s your own fault))))).

In Back to the Future Part II, Doc and Marty travel from 1985 to 2015.  While in 2015, the DeLorean is stolen by old Biff, who travels back to 1955 to give his younger self the sports almanac.  After completing this, he returns to 2015- the same one he left.  

Why wasn’t it an “everything’s coming up Biff” timeline?  Because he traveled back to before the time machine was invented and would have created a paradox.  And the universe abhors a paradox.

2015 Biff didn’t tell 1955 Biff to steal the DeLorean at that exact moment when it made its way into 2015.  If the timeline continued from this version of reality, the altered rich 2015 Biff would not have thought to go back in time to give himself the almanac.  Additionally, in this version of reality, Doc was committed in 1983- a full two years prior to converting the DeLorean to a time machine.   But how do we avoid this paradox?  A pocket universe.  One that would have been destroyed by nature if the events that caused it did not occur (old Biff stealing the DeLorean).

That allowed Biff to travel back to the same future he left and also let Doc and Marty travel back into this new pocket universe.  Had they traveled forward in time along this timeline, it could have only been to the day prior to the DeLorean being stolen.  Any further forward, nothing would have existed.  They could still travel back to 1955 and stop the pocket universe from existing.  Which *spoiler* they did.
