~ Getaway ~ is about recognizing the beauty and spontaneity of a seemingly mundane reality.

It’s inspired by my days growing up living a fairly sheltered life in the suburbs of a Rhode Island town.

Music was always my outlet of expression and my escape from the ordinary...

but now that I’ve grown, I can’t believe I ever once wanted to escape.

I now look back in such adoration at the simplicity of the days I once thought were so humdrum and I’m moving forward desperately holding on to flashes of memories-in-the-making and that effortless feeling I never want to forget.

The production is a fusion of harmonies and soundscapes to give the track that lush, end-of-summertime, nostalgic feel.

A couple weeks ago I road tripped off to Marshfield, MA to perform an acoustic set on 95.9FM WATD’s Tuesday night program “Almost Famous” with DJ John Shea. (who has THE greatest radio voice everrrr) 

The show was an hour of live performance, interview, taking calls from listeners, and pure bliss!

I think autumn will forever mark the start of new beginnings.  

Since I was four years old in pre-school until my final year of college at 21, my “fresh start” always began during the “back-to-school” season.  For 17 years I’ve visited the annual re-invention process of buying new sweaters and jeans, getting a drastically different hairstyle, etc. while also continuing the attempt at refining my daily routine and forming newly desired habits.   Although now there is no school to be returning to— the remaining feeling of having a “fresh start” perseveres as there is much to look forward to as new beginnings await!

"…BUT MELANIE IS SUCH A PRETTY NAME!”

I know, you’re absolutely right. 

My parents lost sleep over deciding what to call their first born child!

Luckily for me, they selected an excellent name when they chose to name me after their favorite actress at the time, Melanie Griffith. 

I wrote the name ‘Melanie' on every homework assignment throughout my childhood schooling all the way to my college years. 

It has been with me through every “Melanie, I love you” to every “What the f**k were you thinking, Melanie!” and  has provided for an evolving pool of nicknames from Mel, Melly, Mel Bell and my personal favorite, Smelanie- or better yet, Smelly Melly.

Though all of this is great and many memories are attached to the name written on my birth certificate- as I grew and decided the direction to take on with my life and career- the name Melanie just didn’t feel right in my bones anymore. 

Because the name has so many connections to my ever-transforming past, it has been difficult to connect the name ‘Melanie’ with the person and the artist I have transformed into. 

And now introducing: 

L A N E Y  L Y N X 

Laney Lynx is the name I am now referring to myself as— and you should too!

Laney is now the person you see on stage during a performance- the confident, fire burning passionate, animated mess of energy. 

She is the voice you’ll be hearing on new releases of ear-worm pop music and the person you’ll be viewing in upcoming music videos. 

Laney Lynx is the name of the artist I have developed into, and not to mention, that double ‘L’ action really rolls off the tongue! 

“BUT MELANIE, LANEY, WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS NOW…I HATE CHANGE!”

Yes, some people do hate change, and I’m saddened to hear this about you!

I, however, am not one of those people. 

I happen to happily embrace change with open arms! 

And after all, where would the human race be WITHOUT change?

NAME-CHANGE CASE STUDY 

An artist I deeply admire, Lana Del Rey, changed her name nearly five times from Elizabeth Grant to Lizzy Grant, Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena, Sparkle Jump Rope Queen, and May Jailer before she became what everyone knows her as today— Lana Del Rey.
