The castle originated as a huge circular sepulcher, intended to contain the ashes of Emperor Publio Elio Adriano, his family and his descendants, and was completed in 139 AD.

A trace of the original dedication to the building of Adriano, is found at the heart of the castle where the plaque resides with the epitaph that the Emperor Adriano pronounced deadly. The verses, very poetic, translated from Latin play more or less like this: “Oh my little sweet soul and pilgrim Guest and body companion, Where will you go soon? In pale, cold and bare places Where you no longer have the usual games”.

#Castedell'Ovo… "The origin of his curious name is linked to one of the most fanciful Neapolitan legends, of medieval origin, according to which Virgil, the great Latin poet, would have hidden inside a cell an enchanting egg. This would be arranged by the poet “wizard” in a glass-filled glass jug full of water protected by an iron cell and hanging on a heavy geese travertine and placed in a room beneath the ground of the castle. So far no one has found the egg. In fact, the place where it was kept was kept secret because “that egg hung all the facts and fortune of Castel Marino” (as it was called the castle). He began to believe that until the egg was broken, the city and the castle would be protected from any kind of calamity, but if something had been done, they would have had problems for Naples and Napoletans".
