wmmap; breaking down claude's trauma and how it created a neglectful father
for the longest time, this fandom biggest gripe about Claude is about how he's being an absent father to Athy throughout her childhood.
In the webtoon, spoon changes the plot from the second season instead of following the original novel. Which imo was a decision to explore Claude's trauma and his relationship with Athy better.
Both Claude and Athy overcoming their family trauma together is what I think the true message of wwmap is about (even though I understand Lucas and Ijikiel are great eye-candy ikemen)
A lot of Claude's trauma really only makes sense after we get the backstory about Claude towards the end of his series
Initially, his trauma doesn't really click. Near the beginning of the series, we find out about the relationship between Claude and Diana. I mostly think this answers the question that Athy raises about whether Claude truly loved Diana after seeing the portrait of his ex-fiance, Penelope.
Again, Athy is misleading us, the audience, because she can be an unreliable narrator, especially in the early chapters (here if you want to read more)
Which makes sense to her, because why else would he treat her so terribly, if he didn't love her mother and, by extension, herself?
but then athy collapses and sees the memory before she was born between them
So now it gets confusing, because clearly Claude had some sort of feelings for Diana. Athy realizes she wasn't a product of a one-night fling but he still clearly doesn't love her, even though he loved her mother, Diana.
She doesn't quite understand their relationship quite yet, but it's clear to her that Claude has some complications about Diana because of her birth even though he loved Diana before she got pregnant.
The only thing that is clear to her is that he doesn't love her right now. It's a firm belief she carries on with her all the way up to season 3, even though it's quite obvious to us by then that it wasn't true.
but here's the thing, Claude's reason for not being to love Athy was far more deeply rooted than just because Athy was the cause of Diana's death
Claude's trauma is about family and betrayal. Specifically, no one ever chose him.
Let's explore this by chronological order, first is Anastacius
In his childhood, his only family besides his sickly mother was Anastacius. Anastacius always cared for Claude in their childhood; in response to that, Claude relied on him a lot
Anastacius was the only person in his life who cared for him in his childhood.
The first betrayal was when Anastacius chose the throne over Claude.
Of course, we now know that Anastacius had his reasons and was led astray by Aeternitas. However, Claude doesn't find out about this until much later and lived with the belief that blood relations mean nothing in the royal family.
Then what about found family?
Penelope was the first person aside from Claude that he opened up to, but was later the second betrayal that he had to experience in his life because Penelope chose Anastacius over him.
In a way, she also chose the throne. She wanted to elevate her status and believed Anastacius was the right person for that. Do I think she could've chosen Claude if he were next in line for the crown? Yes, absolutely.
So that portrait in the office we see was never about longing or love. It was a reminder of his trauma and to not trust others again.
To Claude, the third "betrayal" was Diana.
After all that childhood trauma, he finally found love and could live a happy life again instead of being miserable prior to meeting Diana.
After all this, it reconstructs the scene earlier when Diana is dying from her pregnancy.
"Don't leave. Choose me, instead of the child that's eating at your life as we speak."
Diana's choice of giving birth to Athy and instead of choosing to live with him, which sounds insane, because she never chose Athy over Claude. This was always between her and Athy, Claude has nothing to do with this.
In her eyes, she loved Athy so much that she was willing to lay down her life for Athy to come into the world, but that's not how Claude sees it. Claude thinks this is all about him. Between him and unborn Athy and Athy ultimately won.
Which was the last straw that broke the camel's back because Claude was never anyone's first choice, he wasn't Penelope's and he wasn't his brother Anastacius' first choice either. They chose the throne over him; they both chose power, and when he finally thought he could let someone else in again, it was Diana, and in his eyes, he lost yet again, this time to Athy. He was so traumatized and scarred that he chose to turn to black magic and erase Diana from his memories, because to him it was easier to live that way.
So back to the question about Claude being a bad father. Was he a neglectful father? Unfortunately yes.
but this fandom doesn't really see it past that, the whole reason he couldn't see her was because he wasn't able to separate his trauma from Athy for the first 5 years of her life. He was struggling to separate his own trauma the whole time, and even after they met in season 1.
To me, this scene was the epitome of that struggle. He's still struggling with his trauma with the unhealthy urge to kill Athy, but he's starting to recognise her as an individual and loves her for it.
His trauma really severly worsened and cemented after Diana's death, she really helped him get past a lot of it, and I say this because of the scene where Claude finds out she's pregnant with Athy and he does this
god damn the pure joy when he finds out they were going to have a kid hurts me.
Like Diana single-handedly wiped away all that trauma he had with Anastacius, his experience with his own brother made him reject family ties from blood relationships.
But clearly, this is not the face someone would make if they were pessimistic about building a family.
To me, Claude indeed had his shortcomings about Athy in their childhood, but clearly not without reason. Should we really fault someone so much because of their trauma? I think we fail to recognise that Claude was incredibly broken and traumatised there's clearly something so much more tragic beneath his character than just an absent father
ok anyway that's it for this ted talk, I will probably make another one about how he overcomes it with his relationship with Athy!

I reblogged her late last year and my 2024 has been very satisfying work-wise and (secure enough to not stress out) money-wise so far. Money Snake is wise and good.
I keep seeing people claim that Spoon hates Jennette, and I couldnât be??? The more confused????
**TW for mentions of suicidal ideation
Novel Jennetteâs only purpose throughout the story was highlighting her tragedy. If she wasnât there to show how beloved and how much more amazing and beautiful Athy/LeeJihye was, it was to showcase how depressed and miserable she was. And when she finally was getting support and a rising self-worth/confidence? Plutus has to make it a point that itâs not even realâher support is forced, fake, and the people somehow immune to her magic treat her as bitterly as they always have, only to then finish novel Jennette off even more miserably by having her attempt to kill herself out of feeling how disgusting she is because she was a person who could hurt Ijekiel and Athyâthe two people she loved most. And then the the story ends with her trapped with the man who couldnât give a flying crap about her, pressured into taking care of her again right after rejecting and hurting her cruelly after faking his kindness for her for nearly two decades, with her only solace being Athy visits rarely and writes to her decently often. And in her letter to Athy, she apologizes to Athy (Athy saying sheâs mellowed out more since then) out of âunderstanding how difficult it would be to reach out to someone sufferingâ which I think is utter bull tbh. Thatâs novel Jennette. Isolated, everything sheâs known were lies, depressed to suicidal ideation, Plutus making sure to guarantee sheâs not family with anyone in the slightest, stuck with the man whoâs one of the biggest reasons why she got to this point, and whose false pretenses agonize her to hell and back. No real update on if she heals, if she gets her freedom, if her and Ijekiel even change positively in relationship (in fact, sidestories even offering the possibility of it not changing despite the time passed). Thatâs her in the novel.
Meanwhile, manhwa Jen even when being lied to draws her own conclusions. Her father, who sheâs wanted her whole life, tells her he came back for her and she chooses of her own volition to research to find any truth to his character, despite all the time spent of him being kind to her. And when she is finally told the truth from Athy, she sides with Athy and understands her. Athy and her share a relationship even closer since then. She and Ana get to live happily and peacefully together, having her freedom, surrounding herself in hobbies and things she loves like plants and animals, all while becoming a BUSINESSWOMAN, thriving, selling things sheâs made of her own skill while being flooded with love letters not clouded by her want to be loved/black magic.
And Iâm supposed to believe,,, Spoon hates Jennette? In contrast, Iâve always believed it was Plutus who didnât like Jennette. There were many ways Plutus couldâve solved Jennetteâs arc, many writing decisions Plutus couldâve taken the novel outside of Jennette that could have contributed to just a normal ending for her. But instead Plutusâ every writing decision concerning her was driving her deeper and deeper into the abyss, contrasting how Athyâs life kept getting better and better.
But yes. Spoon is the one,,, who hates Jennette. Definitely.

I'd appreciate Lucas a little better if his fans were the most insufferable entitled brats I've ever met and think insulting the artist is going to get them what they want.
The thing about Thor and Loki's relationship that is unfortunately very overlooked is that it isn't equal at all.
And what I mean by that is not even Odin playing favorites and Loki being jealous of how Thor is treated, that's all external issues.
Within the relationship itself, they aren't equal. Loki doesn't get a say in when they are going on adventures. He gets no say is where they are gonna go and what they are gonna do. No say in anything, to be frank. And no right to complain, no right to have opinions or feelings, because the moment he expresses a thought or a feeling that isn't overwhelmingly positive, he gets shushed, told to know his place, etc.
The relationship isn't equal because Thor holds all the power in it, and takes advantage of it frequently.
Thor surrounded himself with people who bully Loki, and if Loki wants to maintain a relationship with him, he has to suck it up and tolerate them. Thor loves dangerous activities and Loki, if he wants to spend time with Thor at all, has to participate in them to. Etc.
Technically speaking, Thor doesn't force Loki to do anything. Except he withdraws from Loki if Loki doesn't act like he wants him to. Except he straight up sides with Loki's bullies if Loki doesn't do as he say or approve of Thor's decisions in their entirety. Except if Loki wants to spend any time with his brother, he has to do it on Thor's terms.
We don't see Loki making any decisions or having any input when it comes to it: Thor decided to go to Jotunheim, then Loki has to too. Loki is unhappy? Dramatic and cowardish of him. And so on and so forth.
Thor misses his relationship with Loki because Loki was truly his shadow with no objections and no feelings of his own. (Because being unhappy if you are Loki is punishable in that family). Loki doesn't miss it nearly as much because it was all him pushing his own discomfort and wishes aside in order to keep the relationship going.
No, seriously, name me one time in the MCU in which the brodinsons don't spend time together the way Thor decides (demands) to. When they don't do what Thor wants to do. One time when Loki had an emotion or thought of his own and Thor didn't immediately react to it in a mean or borderline violent way.
Have Thor ever spent time at the library with Loki? Have Thor ever asked Loki if Loki needs help with anything? (Whenever Thor has a problem, he demands Loki to help fix it, but has Thor ever helped Loki with his troubles? No, he doesn't even consider that Loki might need help with anything).
Of course Thor doesn't do anything when he suspects that Loki might be controlled in NYC. Of course he calls Loki's reasons to be unhappy "imagined slights".
Because their relationship is truly is one of a man and a shadow. A shadow will do as you do, it has no choice but to do so, and when was the last time you even thought of your shadow?
As you may have heard, four thieves broke into the Apollo Gallery in the Louvre Museum this morning and stole several pieces of historical jewelry. The museum has released the list of eight items that were stolen. Empress Eugenie's Crown was also taken but was found on the ground outside of the museum damaged. Though a heist is always exciting, I am sad that these beautiful works of art that have survived for 200 years are now gone.
Queen Hortense of Holland's Sapphire Tiara - made in the early 1800s with several alterations throughout the century - bought by the Louvre in 1985
Queen Hortense of Holland's Sapphire Necklace - made in the early 1800s - bought by the Louvre in 1985
Queen Hortense of Holland's Sapphire Earring - made in the early 1800s - bought by the Louvre in 1985
Empress Eugenie's Pearl Diadem - made by Alexandre-Gabriel Lemonnier in 1853 - donated to the Louvre in 1992
Empress Eugenie's Bow Brooch - made by François Kramer in 1855 - donated to the Louvre in 2008
Empress Eugenie's Reliquary Brooch - made by Alfred Bapst in 1855 - one of the few pieces to escape the sale of the French Crown Jewels and was instead placed in the Louvre by the French government in 1887
Empress Eugenie's Crown - made by Alexandre-Gabriel Lemonnier in 1855 - donated to the Louvre in 1988
These items are too well known to be sold as is which means they have most likely been broken up for their gemstones already. The gemstones themselves are worth far less that the whole item but they are much safer to sell without being caught.

possession horror where the thing possessing the autistic character causes them to behave in a more neurotypical way. autistic possession horror where the thing inside you is easier to communicate with than you are, the thing inside you doesnât have a flat affect, the thing inside you doesnât let your body stim, the thing inside you is how you were told to behave and you can only do it when you are no longer you. autistic possession horror where you will never forget that everyone liked it better than you before they found out something was controlling you. autistic possession horror where they know whatâs inside you isnât you and debate whether it would be easier for everyone to leave you like this anyway. you agree. reblog.
Things that make me feel like iâm accidentally falling in love (help) and you can use for your OC
âșâș when they text âhome?â and it just means âi wanna be where you areâ and now iâm staring at my phone like an idiot
âșâș hearing them laugh at something dumb i said and itâs like. oh. okay. my heart does that now.
âșâș when they do that thing where they remember the tiny, stupid detail i mentioned once like 3 weeks ago and bring it up casually like it didnât just ruin me
âșâș forehead kisses. hate them. literally short-circuits my brain. why does that feel more intimate than anything else ever
âșâș when theyâre driving and just reach over to hold your hand??? for no reason??? like chill out iâm trying not to fall in love here
âșâș saying my name real soft like itâs important. stop that.
âșâș bringing me snacks when iâm sad. like not even asking. just showing up like âhereâ and suddenly i believe in soulmates??
âșâș sharing headphones. yes itâs 2009 again. yes itâs still romantic. no i will not be taking questions.
âșâș when they notice youâre quiet and just sit with you without trying to fix it. like. thatâs intimacy right there.
âșâș randomly texting âmade me think of youâ with a meme or a song or whatever. like sir. donât.
âșâș accidentally brushing hands and then pretending it didnât happen but both of you definitely felt it like a spark and now everythingâs weird
âșâș when they say âtext me when youâre home safeâ and you do and they actually reply like âthank you.â like. okay now i wanna kiss you
âșâș when they look at you like theyâre trying not to look at you. like youâre dangerous or sacred or both
âșâș helping you zip your jacket. pick something up for you. adjust your necklace. the casual intimacy??? itâs killing me softly
âșâș when they get all soft and tired and start talking about stuff they never talk about and itâs like they forgot to put their armor on for once
âșâș calling you out gently. like âyou always do this when youâre scaredâ and itâs not even mean, itâs just true, and now youâre rethinking your entire personality
âșâș making plans with you and actually showing up. bare minimum? yes. still devastatingly attractive? also yes.
âșâș when they say âi like being around youâ all lowkey like itâs not the most romantic thing anyoneâs ever said
âșâș when they offer you their hoodie or jacket and you pretend youâre not dying about it
âșâș sitting next to you, knee to knee, arm to arm, and neither of you move away
âșâș just. looking at you. and not looking away. and not saying anything. and now you canât breathe.
Her Prince hummed, eyes nearly glowing in the faint light of the room.
"I've been thinking about the next sacrifice. She checks all the boxes. She's innocent enough to be pure of heart. She's isolated, so she wouldn't be hard to approach. Not while Fakir is suspended."
He smiled, and the dying light caught on each of his perfect teeth. "And to top it off, she has the biggest, sweetest, most pathetic crush on me. It'd be child's play, I wouldn't even have to try. What do you think Krahe, does the Raven like poultry?"
Krahe considered it, briefly. Letting Mytho trick poor, stupid Tutu. Watching Father gorge himself on her soft and tender heart before ripping his way into reality. It would get Tutu out of the way, certainly. The remaining pieces of Mytho's heart would be lost, but Krahe already had her Prince in hand. She didn't need anything more.

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.
another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this
